Call for proposals: The role of “heritage words” in Jewish language practices across time, space, and media
Heritage words (Dean-Olmsted 2012) are words and phrases derived from ancestral languages used by members of groups that have experienced language shift: for example, Yiddish words in the English of Jewish U.S. Americans. They are often ideologically and emotionally charged, rendering them productive in stance construction, identity work, and performance. This panel will bring together scholars of language, literature, film, or other media to explore commonalities and particularities of how Jews across diverse contexts use heritage words, and to what effects. Interested participants, please write to Sarah Benor (sbe...@huc.edu) and Evelyn Dean-Olmsted (dr.e...@gmail.com) with a brief description of the proposed presentation.
