to Jewish Languages
Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Journal of Jewish Languages, Emma Breslow and I are delighted to share the following Call for Papers on the topic of "Revitalization and Reclamation of Endangered Jewish Languages."

Many Jewish languages or language varieties today are minoritized or endangered and in need of various types of support. The Journal of Jewish Languages is preparing a special issue focused on the revitalization or reclamation of these languages or varieties. While much work has been done to document and describe at least some of these languages, this issue focuses on the more applied aspects of supporting minoritized Jewish language communities. We welcome papers discussing recent initiatives or community experiences supporting endangered Jewish languages through revitalization, reclamation, preservation, conservation, etc. We particularly encourage submissions from insider linguists, community activists, and/or linguists collaborating with members of Jewish language communities. Submissions can focus on Jewish languages and varieties including but not limited to: Algerian Jewish Sign Language, Jewish Neo-Aramaic, varieties of Judeo-Arabic, Jewish Ethiopian, Haketia, Judeo-Iranian, Jewish Malayalam, Jewish Marathi, Bukharian, Juhuri, Ladino, or Yiddish.

The deadline for abstract submissions is June 26th. Abstracts should be 300 words or less, and be submitted along with a proposed title and references to Emma Breslow at ebre...@hawaii.edu and Bryan Kirschen at kirs...@binghamton.edu. Full articles will be due October 20, 2026, and should be no longer than 12,000 words including notes and references. Accepted abstracts will be notified by late July, and articles will be sent out for double-blind peer review toward the end of 2026.

Best,
Bryan
