Sorta supported already, just not super documented. See commits like:

http://github.com/technicalpickles/jeweler/commit/d411a6fb83c77ed58c17ef02d2f2ec9d83dc0350
http://github.com/technicalpickles/jeweler/commit/6e35acca3ccad5648d9a943a044f89a2e37015ec

You can do something like:

rake version:write MAJOR=1 MINOR=2 PATCH=3 BUILD=pre5

Additionally, you can just add a 4th digit to the VERSION file, ie: 1.2.3.pre5.

Subject: jeweler + prereleases

Hey Josh, any plans to support gem prereleases (with the rake tasks)?
I saw that you just added support for version constants and was
curious if you intended to support prereleases with that change...

If not, would you be interested in a patch?

fyi, this functionality (specifying BUILD from the CL) was introduced
in 1.3.0.
