Once downloaded, it appears to install normally and asks for my login details and which folders to sync. Then it closes and I can no longer access the desktop app interface. Clicking on the app icon opens only the File Explorer window whereas I was expecting a separate app interface. There are no error messages.

Hi Jay, thanks for this. Yes am clicking on that icon - and the good news is that since I put this post up I tried one last reinstall, and now it seems to work! At least, clicking on the icon opens a window with sync history / activity tabs and the option to change preferences etc via my circle on the top right. I guess this is the desktop app?
Hi, I have the same issue (Dropbox not starting) (I'm on Windows 11) - I've done all the checks described here including uninstalling and reinstalling Dropbox 4 times. In my case, after installing dropbox, I never even get to the point that it asks me to sign in. It just blanks on me and does not appear either in the tray (in the task manager, dropbox does appear on the list but when I right click on the icon to see the properties it says DropboxCrashHandler).

Hello. The Dropbox App on my Windows 10 PC isn't launching any more. I've used this Dropbox setup for years, have made no changes to my PC (Windows 10) or security (that I'm aware of), yet when I click on the Dropbox tray icon (or from the actual Program app location on the C drive) I get the normal "progress spin pop up" for 3 seconds, then nothing. I Rebooted the PC = nothing. I uninstalled the App using Revo Uninstaller, Restarted, Reloaded = works once, close, then attempt to open Dropbox again = same problem. I checked the Community posting, but no luck. I opened Task Manager to the Dropbox processes, opened "Details" and this is the screenshot. I don't know if this is meaningful information. Suggestions? Thanks.
Hello, here's an update to this launch problem. Dropbox is still not opening properly when attempting to launch from the Taskbar Icon, or the Windows Program list, or from the app in the C drive programs folder. But, in the System Tray is another Dropbox Icon, and clicking that launches Dropbox, and it appears to be working properly. So, while the overall behavior is disconcerting, I'll be working with this approach until I find an entirely new approach to managing my files in the cloud.
I have new HP Spectre laptop that is running Windows 11. The dropbox app from the Microsoft Store was working perfectly since I bought this laptop about 4 months ago. Then a few days ago it the app wouldn't open. I fiddled around until I was able to copy a link from the web. I moved that smaller looking icon to my taskbar and it seems to be working now. I honestly don't know what I did. It's NOT the original app I got from the Microsoft Store. Im attaching a screenshot.
It sounds like the S Mode version doesn't have all of the features. I mentioned earlier that I'm not sure how I got the icon that I have, but it seems to be working and syncing with my Android phone and iPad.
I seem to be having the same problem as everyone else: Dropbox stops syncing on Windows 11. I have been working on this problem on and off for several days and none of the "known" solutions are working: after a few hours/day, Dropbox simply stops syncing. When I close Dropbox and re-open it, it's starts syncing normally again. Even if I pause syncing and resume, it's starts syncing again normally. But if I leave my PC unattended for a day or so, it stops entirely until it is restarted.
My bandwidth/Internet connection is excellent, there are no strange files/sizes, I'm on the latest version, all power-save settings are disabled, there are never any errors, I've been a paid Dropbox customer for over a decade without any significant issues. My account/payment is in good standing, I have removed and reinstalled the app, I have my folders on the local hard drive, firewall is default, everything is as it always has been - since Windows 11, Dropbox simply stops syncing. i.e. goes idle. At this moment, is is running, no crashes or errors, but it hasn't sync'd since yesterday and shows "Up to date" in the status.
This is happening to me as well and it is driving me crazy. It has been happening every since I upgraded to Windows 11. I have not updated by laptop and syncing works there fine if I am working on that but anything I save on my local desktop does not sync to dropbox. I need this feature to work. I can sometimes get it to work if I reboot but not always. Please help. I have also done everything that the OP said.
I noticed that the dropbox icon was not in my apps tray, so I tried to start it manually, clicking the icon on my desktop. Nothing happens - win 10 task manager shows that it starts, but the program disappears from the list again.
Restarting my pc doesn't do the trick, clicking on the dropbox.exe file doesn't do the trick. I checked the start up settings, nothing strange there (task manager again). I just cannot start Dropbox - it seems to be blocked or something. Dropbox updater is running though....
Did this post not resolve your issue? If so please give us some more information so we can try and help - please remember we cannot see over your shoulder so be as descriptive as possible!
I have been dealing with this for months! And Dropbox support ought to be embarrassed by their lack of a resolution after all this time. They keep giving me the same fixes over and over, obviously they on't care enough to do anything but keep sending my the same stock email (open the ports, unblock in firewall, etc) that haven't helped.
My dropbox stopped starting at system start and would show the same behavior as to OP. Crashes upon manual startup, can't be reinstalled, the installer crashes or maybe finishes but still can't start the client. I've uninstalled, purged everything from the registry, tried the offline installer, shut down Windows Firewall, removed antivirus. No help. All I can do from here is reinstall Windows, but I'm not doing that just because Dropbox won't run. No other program has a problem, just Dropbox.
It may have something to do with having my Dropbox folder on a secondary drive, but it's been like that for at least a year with no problem. Dropbox works on all other computers I use, including mobile devices. Just one computer won't run it.
Dropbox was installed before the upgrade to Windows 11. It has run completely fine but with the recent update to dropbox I was told I needed to update to the latest version in order to continue using Dropbox. However, despite my attempts to install the update it never starts.
I have since completely uninstalled Dropbox and downloaded the Full Off-line Installer for Dropbox which is having the same issue and will not start. I have tried compatibility mode, running as administrator. I get as far as UAC prompting me to approve running the app and then nothing. No error codes, no failure messages. Just nothing. I do not have an AV running besides built-in MS stuff and I have tried disabling all of that. Same results.
Hi Jeff, I am not sure what type of Windows restore you are goint to perform. I assume that Windows will remove your Dropbox files during the restoration process. In that case, I would suggest the following:
to answer Elixr's question, I would only be reverting windows 10 to remove a windows 10 update. this process does not delete my files or folders. However, from experience, I know that this process does affect dropbox's tracking of the sync status between my online dropbox files and their respective copies on my local desktop machine, and can cause major issues downstream.
