Hey there Steven,
We’ve got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that we’re sad to announce the
departure of Workshop Managing Director Solmaz Sharif, the Iranian American poet and activist who
read anti-war poems with us in 2009, dreamt up our speed-dating night, and generally made the
Workshop awesome. The good news is we’re proud to announce that she’s won the "Discovery" /
Boston Review Poetry Contest, one of the most prestigious national contests for emerging poets!
This also means we’re hiring for two positions: a Development Associate to fundraise for our socially progressive programs and a Program Director to help us put together our quirky yet curated literary events series. Click on the links and apply today!
If you’re at SXSW on March 17, check out hip hop activist Jeff Chang talk about Wordstrike, our writer
response to Arizona’s crackdown on immigrants. On Tuesday, March 18, come rock out with avant-
violinist Jason Kao Hwang and comedienne-performer Becky Yamamoto at our Mouth to Mouth Open
Mic. On Thursday, March 25, we’ll be wishing you Nowruz Mubarak or happy Afghan-Persian New Year
with a wonderful Brooklyn reading.
And make sure to send in your short story to the Asian American Short
Story contest judged by Yiyun Li and Porochista Khakpour!
We're Hiring!
The Asian American Writers' Workshop, the preeminent literary arts nonprofit dedicated to excellent
literature of Asian American descent, is looking for two energetic individuals looking to make their mark
on the literary culture of New York. Our ideal applicants are entrepreneurial self-starters capable of
creating and implementing plans in an unstructured environment.

In a nation with fast and vast demographic changes, what is the role of musicians and their fans in
moving beyond hatred? Is SB 1070 in Arizona only the tip of the anti-immigrant movement iceberg?
Artists and activists join together to discuss the Sound Strike and their commitment to working together
to raise awareness and opposition to the treatment of immigrants in Arizona. Featuring Soundstrike’s
Javier Gonzalez, multiple Grammy award winner Rene Perez of Calle 13, Can't Stop Won't Stop author
and Wordstrike Jeff Chang, Roco of Maldita, and artist Favianna Rodriguez.
