Position Overview
The Manager of Programs and Member Engagement will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) by designing, implementing, and managing high-impact programs that strengthen the U.S.-Japan relationship and global partnership. This position will lead the planning and execution of key events, convenings, and leadership initiatives in close collaboration with internal teams, external partners, and a broad network of stakeholders. Areas of focus include bilateral issues, leadership development, social impact, and more.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and enhance leadership initiatives such as the Emerging Leaders Program, Advanced Leaders Collective, and the Japanese American Leadership Delegation, ensuring high-quality programming and impactful participant experiences. Develop and manage program timelines, budgets, speaker outreach, promotion, participant engagement, and logistics. Coordinate with internal departments to ensure program alignment, integration, compliance and visibility. Serve as the primary liaison with vendors, venues, and collaborators for assigned programs Develop and implement member engagement initiatives to deepen connections across the USJC community and expand participation in programs and events. Develop and apply metrics, evaluation tools, and feedback mechanisms to measure membership engagement and program impact, using insights to guide continuous improvement and strategic decision-making. Design, lead, and execute other programs and convenings—both in-person and virtual—including conferences, leadership delegations, and partnership events as assigned. Represent USJC at events, actively engaging members, donors, and partners to strengthen relationships. Perform other duties, administrative or programmatic, including on the ground support, as assigned to support organizational goals. Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in program management, event planning, or related roles—preferably in nonprofit, international, or mission-driven organizations. Demonstrated interest in U.S.-Japan relations, Japanese American communities and history, with cross-cultural fluency; Japanese language proficiency is a plus. Excellent organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and deadlines. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external stakeholders. Flexible, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
