Jetstar's missed flight policy| +61(1800) 407 707

Jetstar is a popular low-cost airline in Australia and New Zealand offering cheap domestic and international flights. As a subsidiary of the major Qantas Group launched in 2004, Jetstar has expanded to become the largest low-cost carrier in Australia.

Jetstar owes this growth to a lean business model minimizing costs through restrictive ticketing terms, predominantly around cancellations and missed flights. This allows everyday affordability but passengers must agree to sacrifice flexibility, especially regarding missed flights. Let’s examine Jetstar’s stringent missed flight policies across their lowest “Starter” through “Plus” to “Business” fare bundles when travels don’t go as planned.

Starter Fares - Total Loss if Flight Missed
Jetstar’s cheapest Starter fares come with the harshest missed flight terms where:

- No missed flight protection or options whatsoever
- 100% fare loss if unable to make an original departure
- No rebooking, refunds, credits, or standby privileges
- Loss still applies whether a missed flight is reported or not

So the rock-bottom Starter fares assume all financial liability with zero recourse if failing to present for the original booking. Even reporting the inability to make the flight via call centers will not reduce losses or earn future travel credits. Starter rules dictate total fare forfeiture regardless of missed flight circumstances.

Plus Fares - Minimal Credit for Reported Delays
Slightly pricier Plus fares do include an allowance if delays prevent making the original Jetstar flights in certain situations:

- 25% flight credit issued if missed flight reported to Jetstar ahead of departure
- Applies for hospitalization, traffic incidents, and other verified delays
- Unreported no-shows receive no compensation whatsoever

So Plus fares encourage updating Jetstar on booking problems immediately. This grants a minimal 25% credit towards future flights as a goodwill gesture. But again, failure to advise Jetstar of issues means full fare loss despite extenuating circumstances.

Business Fares - Full Value Credit for Reported Delays
Highest-tier Business fares offer the greatest leeway if external factors prevent passengers from making flights:

- Full 100% Jetstar Travel Bank credit issued for reported missed flights
- Applies for unexpected hospitalization, accidents, family bereavements
- Verified documents may need to be provided afterwards
- Unreported no-shows forfeit full fare as standard

So Business tickets essentially operate as redeemable credits if last-minute troubles can be evidenced later to Jetstar’s satisfaction. But the onus remains on passengers to demonstrate legitimate reasons for missing flights by advising Jetstar proactively to secure applicable compensation.

How to Report Missed Flights
To benefit from Jetstar’s limited provisions for reported missed flights with Plus/Business fares:

1. Call Jetstar contact center immediately if unable to make check-in
2. Provide booking reference and passenger details
3. Outline genuine reasons for missing a scheduled flight
4. Discuss options for travel credits where eligible per fare rules

So phone is the preferred mechanism for updating Jetstar on missed flight difficulties in real-time to potentially qualify for minimal credits in applicable booking classes later.

When Credits Cannot Be Used
While missing Jetstar flights on certain fare types offer part to full recourse, associated credits do carry restrictive usage terms:

- Normally valid for 12 months only from the original booking
- Route and cabin changes may require additional payments
- Occasionally ineligible for peak domestic and international flights
- Not usable for bookings through online travel agencies

So while missed flight credits provide some protection in higher fare bundles, actual redemption within the validity period is still subject to availability. Credits don’t guarantee access to future peak travel periods.

Summary

In summary, Jetstar’s low fares depend intrinsically on limiting provisions for missed flights beyond passenger control. Only Plus and Business bundles offer potential credits - but they generally cannot exactly replace initial bookings’ value due to blackout periods. So flyers should insure against disruptions and understand Jetstar rewards early notifications, not necessarily compensating for genuine booking failures afterwards. Paying more upfront for flexibility remains the key to avoiding financial losses if the unforeseen later intervenes.
