Realizing these are only highlights (no dropped passes here!), but for those who are worried about Keller, this ought to make you feel a little better.

I don't have a big problem picking Keller (and would have even less if they hadn't traded up 6 spots for him) - the Jets need weapons on O and obviously they thought he was the best on available at that point.

But when 90% of the highlight reel is against glorified DI-AA teams like the Golden Gophers, Akron and Ball State, it actually makes me like him even less.

WOW!! I think JETS should use Baker (to block) AND Keller AT THE SAME TIME!! It would drive defenses crazy ...ESPECIALLY IN THE RED ZONE!!

2 things stand out for me - he crushes Ball State and Minnesota, so when we play them, we'll be in great shape.  ;-) And he seems to be jawing or pointing after every play.  Swell. But he can sure catch (especially in the air) and seems like he can bowl over defensive backs.

Without having access to the Jets war room, there is no way to tell why
they felt they had to move up to get him. It's a player they obviously
wanted, and felt that someone else was going to grab him. I can't
imagine they would have traded up if they really felt like he'd still be
there at 36.

This was just a silly YouTube film put together by someone other than
Keller. I wouldn't take it too seriously, just as I wouldn't take it
too seriously if someone put together a "lowlight" reel that showed all
dropped passes in his college career.

I think the important takeaway is that we got a guy who can run, catch
and score touchdowns. When was the last time we had one of those at the
TE position?

Good point and furthermore when was the last time we had a guy who could do that at ANY position?

CMart was never much of a receiver, Keyshawn couldn't run... seriously, when have the Jets ever had a truly "explosive" offensive player that other teams had to game plan around?

I doubt Keller is that guy but at least they're taking a shot.

April 29, 2008 -- OK, admit it Jets fans. You really wanted Darren
McFadden or Matt Ryan.

McFadden could have injected instant energy into the Jets' plodding,
one-first-down-at-a-time offense.

And Ryan could have provided a complete start-over at quarterback, an
area that came into serious question during last year's 4-12 flop,
during which Chad Pennington was benched and Kellen Clemens wasn't
exactly impressive replacing him.

All fair and understandable desires, wanting McFadden, potentially the
most dynamic, game-changing offensive playmaker in the draft, or Ryan,
considered by the so-called experts as the best quarterback available.

Either one of those players would have provided some serious intrigue to
the present and future of the team.

But the Jets didn't fall on their face by drafting Ohio State defensive
end/linebacker Vernon Gholston with the sixth overall pick of the draft
Saturday.

They addressed their most significant area of need - their anemic pass
rush, which last year scared quarterbacks the way those yapping tiny
boutique dogs on the Upper East Side frighten passers by on the
sidewalk.

The Jets, who really coveted Virginia DE/LB Chris Long but knew he was
not falling to No. 6, took the next-best-thing on defense in Gholston,
who had 221/2 sacks in 28 games the last two seasons.

The knock on Gholston, based on a cross section of the 3,486 draft
analysis publications published before the draft, is that he supposedly
"takes" some plays and games off.

The guess here is that the above claim is a bit over-blown as a result
of the saturated over-analysis that the draft has now drawn because of
the massive fan interest.

Having spoken to a number of people who know and have played with
Gholston, and listening to him and meeting him briefly Saturday night,
the impression drawn here is that he's all about football and isn't
easily distracted by outside influences.

No one, of course, knows for sure how good any of these drafted players
will be until they play, but you have to figure Gholston is going to
help the Jets' sack-challenged pass rush.

Gholston's presence surely should light a warm candle under the rump of
Bryan Thomas, who responded to his $5 million-per-year new contract last
year by delivering two sacks to the stat sheet.

Despite the fact that you didn't get your intriguing, sex-appeal pick in
the draft, Jets fans, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Eric
Mangini improved the team through the draft and you're not likely to rue
the pick of Gholston.
