Vacancy: Special Assistant to the Director
Start date: September 1, 2010 or earlier
Remuneration: Commensurate w/ experience (full NYU benefits)
Location: New York City

The Center on International Cooperation (CIC) at New York University
works to enhance international responses to humanitarian crises and
global security threats through applied research and direct engagement
with multilateral institutions and the wider policy community. It has
an international reputation for agenda-setting work on post-conflict
peacebuilding, global peace operations, and UN reform.
CIC is seeking a full-time and highly motivated Special Assistant to
the Director. The job offers a broad range of exposure to
international policy issues around security and development, and is a
tremendous opportunity to launch a career.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of CIC’s Director, the Special Assistant will be
responsible for the following duties:

* Manage the Director’s schedule, incl. organizing meetings and
travel plans;
* Deal with incoming and outgoing correspondence incl. drafting
correspondence and ensuring appropriate follow-up;
* Participate in internal and external meetings and write-up
minutes;
* Liaise with colleagues and working partners to help ensure good
information flow and working relationship;
* Brief the Director on all matters requiring his personal
attention;
* Assist as needed in budget and project management;
* Assist in the research, writing and editing of publications;
* Undertake any other tasks as given by the Director.

Qualifications:

* Education: University degree (international relations, politics,
economics or any relevant field)
* Work: practical experience working with an international
organization or an NGO/research institution is an advantage, but not a
requirement;
* Language: fluency in written and spoken English.
* Other skills:
o Familiarity with international cooperation and the
multilateral system and interest in the work of CIC;
o Excellent organizational skills and a strong ability to
multi-task;
o Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
o Flexibility and ability to work under pressure;
o Good computer skills, including proficiency in word
processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.

POSITION TITLE:                 Director of Global Classroom

 

REPORTS TO:                        Executive Director

 

START DATE:                        Immediately

 

SALARY RANGE:                   Commensurate with experience.  Full benefits package.

 

Overall management responsibility for One To World’s Global Classroom, a citywide curriculum resource offered to elementary, middle and high schools under an official contract with the New York City Department of Education.  Through Global Classroom, One To World trains and deploys international undergraduate/graduate students and scholars to deliver in-class workshops throughout the five boroughs of New York City and in suburban communities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

§      Administrative experience in educational program management

§      Teaching experience/teacher training experience; experience in New York City schools and after-school programs a plus; knowledge of school curricula and classroom culture

§      Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail a must; ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and implement systems that contribute to an efficient program

§      International work, study or living experience; experience in global education

§      Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, cross-cultural)

§      High energy and enthusiasm for the position; flexibility; willingness to work overtime

§      Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs; Experience working with graphic design, desktop publishing software and web design/maintenance

§      Master’s degree preferred

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Management & Development (35%):

§      Supervise and manage a small team of staff and part-time interns in all aspects of program       implementation

§      Provide direction and guidance on program growth and development; ensure best practices

§      Maintain and cultivate relationships with strategic program partners and funders

§      Program marketing and promotion to schools, after-school programs, NYC school districts and other potential contracting agencies

§      Assist in preparation of funding proposals and presentations to financial contributors, and in drafting program reports for funders

 

2.     Program Delivery & Evaluation (30%):

§         Conduct in-school orientation for teachers and administrators

§         Coordinate speaker assignments with schools

§         Accompany speakers (or arrange for speakers to be accompanied) into schools; co-facilitate sessions when necessary; and provide feedback

§         Evaluate, measure and analyze impact of programs on students, teachers and speakers

Development of international speaker roster (20%):

§         Recruit and select students/scholars to serve as Global Classroom speakers from One To  World’s college and university members

§         Design and implement speaker training workshops; conduct one-on-one training and  preparation of      Global Classroom speakers

§         Prepare and update speaker and teacher training materials

 

4.     Development of Curriculum Materials (10%):

§         Enhance and develop program manuals for teachers, speakers, and staff.

§         Develop and update lesson plans, and classroom handouts and materials

§         Develop and maintain Global Classroom website and its contents

 

5.     Financial Responsibility (5%):

§         Assist in developing program budgets

§         Invoice schools and track purchase orders

§         Maintain spreadsheet of expenses and program-specific financial records; prepare reports, as requested

 

6.     Other duties, as requested
