*H.O.P.E
**16 - 31 December 2013*
Dear Family,
Most of us look forward to the month of December as it brings with it the
season of Christmas, a time to share our joy with our loved ones. Most
often this gets expressed in giving and receiving material gifts. In this
H.O.P.E, we have the story of a young girl who has a different kind of gift
to share with all of us.
Alisha* is presently a student of Class 10. Recently she shared with us the
happy news that she had been awarded the first prize in a ‘sari’ painting
competition in her region.
Alisha was introduced to this art right from when she was a little girl.
Her first teacher was her mother, who not only painted on fabrics but also
weaved cloth for their use. Her brother also had a strong interest for
drawing.
When her father passed away, Alisha’s mother was suddenly faced with more
responsibilities to run the house and gradually she stopped painting
altogether. Over time her brother’s talent too took a back seat as he began
to focus more on his studies and career. As a result, Alisha who had a
passion for the arts from her early days suddenly saw her interest
diminishing. It was only at the age of 9 when her English teacher happened
to see one of her drawings and appreciated her work, that Alisha started
pursuing her passion more seriously.
Alisha’s keen interest in drawing slowly led her to experiment with new
forms such as glass painting and ‘sari’ painting. Her teacher’s motivation
continued and gradually more people supported her talent. Requests poured
in from her friends and teachers who wanted to gift their family and
friends with a unique painted sari. Alisha enjoyed doing them and in
return, was paid a small amount for her hard work. Now that she receives a
lot of orders and also because much time is spent on it, Alisha charges a
reasonable amount for her work.
When we called her a few days back, she happily informed us that she was
busy living her passion. She is not only able to contribute to her family’s
earnings but is also doing so without compromising on her studies. She has
one important task left before this Christmas that of making a wonderful
painting for her sponsor.
Many a times, most of us are aware of our gifts but do nothing to nurture
it. I often tell the young people I meet, “You must develop your gifts and
it is only then, can it take you places you have never imagined”. Let this
be your gift to God, yourself and others this beautiful season.
All of us at the OCS Office join in to wish you a wonderful Christmas and a
blessed New Year!
