Dear Friends,

This coming Shabbos has been designated as a special Shabbos in honor of the 250th anniversary of America, with Jews across the country being encouraged to observe, celebrate, and share the beauty of Shabbos together — by President Donald Trump himself!

Throughout Jewish history, there were times when Jews were prevented from keeping Shabbos and living openly as Jews. How remarkable is it that today, in the free world, we are witnessing a moment where the leader of this great nation is publicly encouraging Jews to celebrate Shabbos?

We should see this as both a blessing and an opportunity — a blessing, to appreciate that we live in a country where Judaism can be practiced openly and proudly, and an opportunity, to strengthen Jewish connection and unity through the gift of Shabbos.

At a time when the world — and the Jewish people — often feel divided, Shabbos has the power to bring us together.

This week, we encourage you to think of a friend, neighbor, coworker, or family member who may not regularly experience Shabbos, and consider:

• Inviting someone for a Shabbos meal or part of your Shabbos experience

• Reaching out with a warm Erev Shabbos phone call or “Good Shabbos” message and the opportunity of this special Shabbos

• Encouraging women to light Shabbos candles and experience the beauty of the moment

• Inspiring someone to “disconnect to reconnect” by putting away phones and electronics for 25 hours

• Bringing over homemade challah or another small gesture of warmth and care

Often, it is the simple feeling of being welcomed, remembered, and included that leaves the greatest impact.

Let’s use this unique moment to appreciate who we are, what we have, and the timeless power of Shabbos to bring our people together.

Wishing you a beautiful and meaningful Shabbos.

Warmly,

Rabbi Chaim Sampson
