Jose got his start in the jewellery industry at age 14. Having left school temporarily to help his parents, who had both fallen ill, he found employment with a Viennese goldsmith who had also fled Nazi Germany. Jose would later tell of learning his craft the old-fashioned way, from melting gold through creating sheets or wire and making jewellery by hand, and learning how to set precious gems.

Jose immigrated to the United States at age 17 and worked at a series of jobs in the jewellery industry. Graduating high school, he took gemmology courses at GIA, and obtained a degree from the Mechanics Institute of the General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen of the City of New York.

In 1958 he set out on his own, enjoying early success with store owners who loved his designs. But few were prepared to sell the jewellery under his name, and Jose made it a mission to forge a new path in the industry, where branding and designer-driven products are key components.

The name Jose Hess became synonymous with fine jewellery design. In 1963, he won the first of his De Beers Diamonds International Awards, for a gold and diamond leaf pin. Over the years he was recognized many times, among them winning seven De Beers Diamonds International Awards, eight De Beers Diamonds Today Awards, two International Gold Corp. Certificate of Merits and an American Gem Trade Association Spectrum Award. His jewellery was often spotted on celebrities at red carpet events, and was featured by consumer magazines such as Modern Bride, Elle, In Style, Vogue and others.

In 1996 he was elected President of CIBJO, beginning the first of two consecutive two-year terms at the start of 1997, ending in December 2000. During this period he worked hard to nurture a new generation of leadership for the international jewellery business.

I have difficulties too in playing the game. I can start the game but no menus appear and if I click on something, the game crashes. I followed all steps, but am not able to install the patch. Even if I run it as administrator, and set compatibility to 98 or XP. Any other thoughts?

If you have Polish included in your installation and want to switch to it try following this tutorial: -giant-2/industry-giant-change-language/ and try entering a pl or p under Country and see if that changes your language.

All that running the installer.bat file that may have been included in your installation will do is remove the files from step 3. If the batch file is failing to execute please just delete the specified files manually.

using windows 7 64 bit. Bought gold edition. installed game. says it needs to now check compatibility of graphics card. screen flashes few times then just stops. loading circle continues moving in centre of screen. tried compatibility too. any help?

I have IGII gold edition. By deleting the enginetest.exe i can make the game run but no buildings or main menu icons are present. None of the links to the nvidia patch work so i cannot install that. is this likely to be the reason for this error?

I purchased it from steam and it is a little temperamental and sometimes crashes on loading the game, but after a few attempts or running the app in administrator mode, it will work for me on both my PC and Laptop. my PC is win 7 pro 64 bit, gtx 780 ti graphics card so it clearly has made some improvements but I can see from the steam discussions that it doesnt work for everyone.

I do not have any of the above issues !! Now if only my win7 64bit laptop would simply read the dvd I might get some. Will avoid similar bargain disc releases in future, and just use steam, and if i have to, origin.

The event then moved on to explore potential solutions to the challenges of waste. Dr James Comerford, from the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE), introduced a range of different biodegradable polyesters being created by GCCE from 100% bio-based platform molecules to help minimise plastic waste.

Jennifer Attard from GCCE and Dr Nicki Lisa Cole from SEI-York explored the importance of the circular economy in relation to electronic waste. With most of our technology relying on finite resources, the extraction of these elements is essential. Jennifer discussed her PhD project around extracting gold, silver and indium using bio-based materials called Starbons, whilst Dr Cole introduced the Restart Project, a social enterprise that helps people learn to repair their electronics to extend their use. Professor Helen Petrie then explored how using mobile phone apps can help reduce waste. Through the WasteLess app households will be able to monitor their food waste and identify ways to alter their behaviour.

Dr James Chong described his own research, a collaboration with Yorkshire Water focussed on improved ways to deal with sewage sludge, before launching the YESI Waste Network, a cross departmental initiative he will lead to bring together experience and interests in waste research across the University of York.

The event ended with a lively panel debate, with the audience offering their own thoughts and perspectives on the challenge of waste and suggesting ways both Unilever and the University could make even more strides towards tackling the problem!

We had some great feedback from our attendees. Lisa-Marie Newman, Director of York Nurturing Community said that the day was packed with 'mind-blowing science and inspirational people fighting for the common good' whilst Giovanna Pesante, PhD student claims 'she enjoyed the event, particularly because there were different subjects discussed, which were all topical and presented by excellent speakers.'
