Safe way to migrate from OpenID2 plugin

We intend to migrate from the deprecated OpenID2 plugin to the github authentication plugin. Does anyone know of a safe way to do this to avoid getting locked out of Jenkins? I'm looking for a "best practices" approach to doing this.
