Jenkins / Epic JENKINS-61865
Windows Support Update
Issue Type: Epic Epic
Assignee: Kohsuke Kawaguchi
Components: core, packaging, windows-slave-installer-module, windows-slaves-plugin
Created: 2020-04-10 11:34
Labels: roadmap platform-sig
Priority: Minor Minor
Reporter: Oleg Nenashev

Currently Jenkins has no documented Windows Support policy. It would be great to get it fixed, and to deprecate/remove de-facto support for old platform versions:

  • There is explicit documentation for Windows support policy in Jenkins and its installer components. This policy is discussed and approved within the Jenkins Developer mailing list and Platform SIG. Suggested changes:
    • All installers and service wrappers require Windows 7 / Windows Server 2012 or above (and .NET framework 4.0+). They also require 64bit platforms. Support for other platforms are provided via manual jenkins.war management
    • Jenkins master runtime requires Windows 7 / Windows Server 2012 or above. It may work on older versions, but we do not guarantee compatibility
    • Jenkins agent runtime requires Windows 7 / Windows Server 2012 or above. It may work on older versions, but we do not guarantee compatibility
  • Downstream components (WinSW and WinP) include explicit system requirements
  • Jenkins core components are updated to follow

** Custom Jenkins packaging may have different requirements (Jenkinsfile Runner, WARs built by Custom WAR Packager)
