This kind of started as a joke but then Corey went and made it serious.

Olivier, if Oracle Cloud gave us free stuff, how interesting would that be to
you? :)

Subject: Connecting about Jenkins and Oracle Cloud
X-Mailer: Oracle Beehive Extensions for Outlook 2.0.1.9.1 (1003210) [OL
16.0.11328.20624 (x86)]

Hi,

By introduction, I am Ross Brown, I lead go to market for Oracle Cloud
Infrastructure. I was speaking with Corey Quinn at the Duckbill Group and he
mentioned that the Jenkins foundation may be looking for a new home for hosting
the project and suggested we reach out to chat. Dan Gerrity (cc’d here) and I
would welcome a chance to chat with you about it if Corey’s suggestion makes
sense; Dan leads the developer services group for OCI and we would really be
interested in chatting about delivering a Jenkins-as-a-service into tenancies
or other ways to make Jenkins as a platform easier to use, build on and extend
on OCI.

Thanks

RB

And how crazy would it be to have someone from Oracle to work on this?
One of the big challenge we have is to migrate/improve a service in a timely manner and being able to quickly move one service would also be a nice showcase for them.

I am currently looking to reduce the cost for pkg.jenkins.io && updates.jenkins.io and they also deserve some refactoring but having access to additional compute would already be useful.

Taking the current state of Oracle Cloud, I believe that they are desperate to get more services to differentiate themselves from others. Other Public Clouds do not provide fully managed Jenkins-as-a-service users may expect, and it could be a good opportunity. Oracles customer base is also likely to want more classic services than to experiment with migrating their mission-critical pipelines to the emerging and not yet reliable cloud native awesomeness.

Taking the continuous pressure to reduce Azure costs and the amount of time infra contributors spend on that, I am totally willing to explore the options with Oracle Cloud.

P.S: Thanks to Corey for the idea. It could have been a great prank indeed :)

Based on Olivier's response... don't shoot me

I actually think this might be a GOOD IDEA.

One of the key differentiating factors with Oracle Cloud compared to others is
that their egress bandwidth pricing is REALLY GOOD and not complete insanity
like AWS and Azure.

I will look Tracy and Olivier into the discussion with the Oracle Cloud peeps
and let you all follow the trail, but fgor something like pkg. and
updates.jenkins.io this smells really interesting to me!

We discussed further in the infrastructure meeting today and agreed that we're interested in a conversation with Oracle.
