Hey I'm just wondering what coffeeshops everyone frequents, or other
locations, when you need to leave the house for a change of scenery.

I like the places I go... except for one huge thing. I reek of food!
Most coffeeshops have open kitchens, and I leave smelling like panini,
red onion, grill smoke, etc, etc. It bugs me to no end. Any quiet, wi
fi'd, stink-free places that you frequent for a few hours to get some
work done?

Thanks for the rec's---

I have to say that, if you tire of the coffee shops, I really
appreciate CubespacePDX (www.cubespacepdx.com) and SoukPortland
(www.soukllc.com) for co-working environments. They have wi-fi and
free coffee and snacks. You pay by the hour/day or month, but you
don't have to keep moving around, and there are other people like you
there -- instead of hipsters writing poetry and moms with strollers.

That said, I keep a list of the best shops I know, and I've never
smelt like panini coming out of them. At least not more than I did
when I went in. They are:
- Crema (SE 28th)
- Twin Paradox (SE 17th)
- Bakery Bar (SE Water)
- Mercato (NW Davis)
- Staccato Gelato (SE Bybee)

Cheers- Isaac

There's a business plan with a bow on it: A Portland coffee shop that
caters directly to the independent army of workers. My wishlist would
include:

T3 internet, ok so realistically, T1
ethernet ports galore
super comfortable but with adequate work surfaces everywere
music yes, but tailored to never get in the way of working
booths!
the coffeeshop's web "site" lives in the cloud: wiki, basecamp, etc...
after 5pm = lectures and discussions on topics of interest
(programming, gtd, design)

I should note that, as I write this, I'm sitting in Crema and it's
louder than hell in here.

Funny! I’ve actually heard a lot about Crema on Twitter, and how it
makes for a great work spot.

I think you have a great idea here—and I would love to talk more about
it—or about ways that we can ask a coffee shop to implement some of
the features that you talked about here.

Isaac,

I agreed about both CubeSpace and Souk as a coworking environment.
I’ve used them before, and they work great when you’re in a crunch
(ie. need to finish a deadline before afternoon), but on most days, I
personally prefer to work on coffee shops for their informal
environments.

And much thanks for the coffee shop recommendations! I’m currently
writing an article about the best coffee shops for working alone/
coworking/group meeting/client meeting around the Pearl District, and
for some reason, never thought about Mercato before.
