I just heard about Jelly this morning on NPR and think it's a great
idea!

I recently moved to PDX form Sacramento, bringing my job as a Research
Analyst with me. Working from home is great, but I do miss the human
connection and networking.

If anyone is interesting in getting this thing going in PDX, post
here!

Thanks!

Lars,

Completely interested but Portland has a strong BarCamp movement and it seems like the way BarCamp is done here it competes with the idea of Jelly.

I could be wrong and if anyone else wants to take the lead on getting things rolling again, I have no personal feelings about that happening. If someone wants to pick the date I can see if souk is still interested in giving us space. I believe the time is restricted if we take souk up on their offer, but starting with a date is always good.

Isn't BarCamp an annual event?

In Portland they have Barcamp Meetups. I think the aims of the different events are unique enough, however finding the people to be interested in Jelly has been a challenge. I've talked with the people at souk (www.soukllc.com) in the past and they've been agreeable to having them there. If someone wants to pick a date, I'll contact them again to check availability.

Pick the dates and I'll get the place.

That's a bummer that it's been hard to find people. I'd definitely
check it out if it happened.

Is there an interest thread somewhere I should post to, or is this
basically it?

Matt -

This is basically it. If you pick the day and I can secure it with souk, you'll be guaranteed at least two people will show up for it :).  I can updated the Jelly in Portland wiki to show the new event, put it on Upcoming, basically anywhere you want to tell people about it is fine. I don't have any ownership of the group, other than I tried to get the first couple of ones together and then got a new job and have been slacking since ;).

Wow, I went from being mildly interested to being one third of the
planned attendance!

I hesitate to pick a time since I'm not even sure what goes on at
these things. How long do they typically last? Would it be during the
work day or after hours?

Honestly I'm pretty easy to schedule so maybe if anyone else is
reading this they can speak up as far as schedule goes?

Out of curiosity, what kind of work do you do?

Our times might be restricted somewhat by our location, but we don't have to use souk if it's not going to work for people. The last time it was from 5-7 at souk. I'll fire off an email today and see what they have to say about times and dates, if there are any restricted.

I do frontend web/web app development and other duties as assigned ;).

5 - 7 works for me on some days. Let me know what you find out from
them.

Sounds like you kinda do the same thing I do, although I've been more
on the "other duties" these past few weeks.

What kind of turn out did you get last time? Was it a total flop or
did it just not come together again for other reasons?

The first one I was the only one. Like I said, this is probably the
most conversation we've had about it since I organized the first one.
There is a lot of stuff competing for people's attention and time, so
it is understandable.

I'll see what souk has to say and get back to the group.

I'm a local Ruby on Rails developer, and I'd heard about about jelly a
while ago. When I looked at the time no one was doing anything, but
I'd love to get something going. Also, I noticed that the jelly site
has you guys listed as 'coming soon' that might be affecting
interest?

After the first Jelly I changed things back to coming soon until there
was enough interest. At this point if someone picks a date in June I
can work on the space. Here are dates that won't work for souk: 4,
10-13, 15-17, 19-20, 24-26

So take a look at your schedules and for those interested let's pick one.

I might be out of town the 16th through the 19th of this month. Other
than that there's a good chance I can make it.

If those are the dates that will *not* work for souk then it looks
like all we are left with this month is the 18th, 23rd, 27th and 30th.

I can now officially say I can make any of those except the 18th.

Anyone else?

I will contact souk and for the June 23 date.

Great, works for me.

Are those other days not available because they have people scheduled
to fill the entire place? I had no idea they were so busy.

I'm currently just working out of my home office, so my days are
pretty flexible.

I think the Souk availability is due to them booking other large
groups in their open workspace on certain dates....might overwhelm the
space to have too many people there....if both groups had lots of
people.

I'm working in an office downtown now, but would attend on the given
day to add to the group and meet folks. Jelly is an interesting
concept. Thanks for doing this!
