Liberalism? What is liberalism? In the broadest of definitions liberalism is the idea of personal liberty – and should therefore be aspired by all freedom-loving people in the world. Unfortunately reality is not that simple. The well-sounding term liberalism is often misunderstood. Some misrepresent liberalism because they don’t know better, others distort liberal ideas because they fear the liberating force of freedom.

Then what does liberalism mean in an Indian context? And what does it mean to be a liberal in a nation proud to be termed the biggest democracy on earth?

To find original answers to these questions we are organizing this essay writing competition – an exercise about liberalism in India for liberals and non-liberals alike. For in a true liberal spirit everyone is invited to join and share. With but a few qualifications.
