Centre for Civil Society (CCS) cordially invites you to the 11th Jeevika: Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival, on 13 & 14 December, at the University of Chicago Center in Delhi. The Asia-wide festival brings to light policies and regulations that curb livelihood freedom of the poor, and also provides a platform for documentary makers to take greater interest in the sector and share their experiences and creativity. Now in its 11th edition, the festival has won support from celebrities like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Subhash Ghai, Deepti Naval, Nandita Das, Rahul Bose and Shabana Azmi. We would be delighted to have you with us to celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship through the medium of documentaries! Spread the word among your network! Here’s what you can do. Jeevika, CCS’ livelihood initiative, is geared at achieving greater livelihood freedom for the rural and urban poor. It aims to further public policy measures to clear the path for free enterprise by eradicating market entry and exit barriers to promote individual livelihood for street entrepreneurs (i.e. street hawkers, cycle rickshaw pullers, small shop owners etc.). Over the years, the Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival has also proved to be a source of inspiration for other causes championed by CCS—and this is what sets it apart. Our ‘Bamboo is not a tree’ campaign had its beginnings in a documentary, Hollow Cylinder screened at the Jeevika festival in 2009, which highlighted the plight of tribal communities in North East India who earn their livelihood by selling bamboo. The documentary inspired CCS to launch a very successful nation-wide campaign, resulting in the classification of bamboo as a grass by the Ministry of Health and Environment that will provide much needed relief to many relying on bamboo-based products for their living.
