Few today question capitalism's superiority in producing material abundance. Instead, the debate for the hearts and minds of the public rests more than ever onmoralissues. The philosophical aspect of this question makes it a perfect topic for a colloquium. - Should the moral case for capitalism be based on the greatest good for the greatest number or on respect for each person's right to choose what to do with his or her own life?
- Is there a conflict between private interest and the welfare of "society"?
- What is the social responsibility of business in a market economy?
- How do the answers to these questions bare on current issues in India?
Centre for Civil Society in partnership with Friedrich Naumann Foundation is organising a two-day residential colloquium which follows a Socratic discussion format to create a conducive environment for a full and open exploration of ideas on the chosen theme. As a result, our colloquium is also roundtable in nature. A set of original works, writings of celebrated authors and thinkers based on the chosen theme are distributed well in advance and serve as a starting place for discussion. The purpose of the discussions is neither to convey doctrine nor to drive home certain conclusions. The colloquium challenges participants to examine, refine, and extend their own ideas in the company of inquiring colleagues who are also interested in questions on The Morality of Capitalism.
