Steinberg teamed up with IOSONO to include the Anymix Pro plug-in with Nuendo 6. Anymix Pro allows you to upmix any surround sound configuration to another, including plain old stereo. The Anymix Pro interface is shown in Figure 5:
Enhanced mixing features in Nuendo 5 include further developments on the Nuendo automation system as well as direct routing with multiple destinations. A new plug-in set with the next-generation Surround Panner and a surround bus Patch Editor further add to the advanced feature set for surround that have been the hallmark of the Nuendo audio engine since its inception. Numerous other additions in Nuendo 5 include a waveform display in the Nuendo mixer, improved compatibility with Pro Tools audio files and automated Batch Export functions.
The major update also adds an array of new and improved sound design tools. Frequency 2 is an eight-band equaliser with a dynamic mode and side-chaining talents. Others include Multi-Band Imager, which lets you assign up to four bands across the stereo image; Squasher, which gives you three bands of compression, and Multi-Tap Delay, now supporting up to 7.1 surround sound.
Nuendo is a 128 track audio recording facility which supports VST 2.0 and ASIO 2.0, it includes a complete 128 channel mixer and supports surround sound in ways that make other systems look very inflexible. Nuendo is the only system on the market today that is able to cope with the rapid changes in surround technologies.
Nuendo also includes an unlimited undo version history for both the applications environment and each individual audio clip used in the project. Also supported are VST 2.0 and Direct X, MIDI and video tracks, full automation, hardware remote control and much much more. For detailed information, please see www.nuendo.net.
Control features include high-performance mic pres with discretely switched 6dB gain steps and composite five-segment LED bargraph for level monitoring. Continuously variable control is offered over the stereo polar patterns from omni through to cardioid to figure-of-eight with a width control providing everything from mono to wide image stereo. End fire and invert controls are provided to correct for three-dimensional microphone positioning while still maintaining the correct stereo and surround perspective. Other features include hi-pass filtering to reduce rumble and wind noise, switchable M/S output and headphone monitoring.
The FireWire Audiophile makes possible 24-bit resolution/96-kHz sampling rate audio input and output. A pair of stereo analog RCA inputs is provided, along with two pairs of stereo outputs. A digital S/ PDIF coaxial input and output is also featured and this digital output supports Dolby AC-3 (Audio Coding 3) and DTS (Digital Theatre Sound) surround formats. The MIDI input/output ports allow connection with MIDI-enabled devices. Two FireWire ports allow connection with computers and other hardware devices and the unit can be powered by a 6-pin FireWire bus or by the included DC power supply. A headphone output with dedicated level control allows direct audio monitoring. The output has A/B switching to allow monitoring to change between assignable sources. Software-controlled mixing can be used to manipulate both the hardware and software input/output.
