Hi Douglas parents and caregivers,

Based on topics from the survey, the PAC has organized two workshops this winter/spring.  These workshops are open to all adult caregivers, but are not intended to have participation by our children.

Workshop 1: Parenting Online and Parental Controls Online

The Pandemic has meant many of our kids are using technology more than we anticipated. Merlyn Horton, technology educator and founder of safeonline.ca, will help caregivers understand the challenges of current technology for our kids and how we can support our children to make positive choices online and off.  Using a pro-technology approach, this workshop will cover:

·         Implications and effects of technology on our children

·         The challenges, and suggestions for supporting parents to make good on and offline choices

·         Good content and online ideas

Find out more about Merlyn: http://www.safeonline.ca/about-safeonline/

Date: February 10
Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Place: zoom (online)
Cost: $10 per family. Fully subsidized spaces available, if cost would be a barrier to your family’s participation.

Register at  https://munchalunch.com/ under "Winter 20/21Workshops".

Workshop 2: Positive Parenting and Discipline

Most caregivers experience power struggles and conflict with their children, and many of us wish we had better tools for addressing these issues in a way that is positive. Rebecca Janke, register social worker and parent coach, will help caregivers identify a number of positive discipline ideas that promote parent/child connection rather than eroding it. This workshop will cover:

·         Defining our Purpose for Discipline: Punishment vs. Discipline
·         The preparation: preparing our child, and situations for success
·         Discipline that Nourishes: encouraging toward goal behaviour rather than punish negative behaviour
·         The Discipline Toolbox: Strategies that support the parent/child connection, and promote emotional and social wellness.

Reminder: Be Part of the Douglas School Cookbook! Share your family’s favourite recipe and be part of this cookbook fundraiser.  We hope our cookbook will help draw our school families closer together during the pandemic. This cookbook will also act as a time capsule and memorial of the joy food has brought us in an otherwise difficult time. Deadline for submission is February 10, 2021. Respond to this email for more information and submission instructions.
