What: Launch of a Systemwide Sustainability Committee
Aloha Everyone:
The sustainability of the University of Hawai`i System and the Islands of Hawai`i are inextricably linked and both require important changes in a variety of individual and institutional behaviors. Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration in how we operate our buildings and educate our students. Interest in this topic is growing rapidly across the country and the globe. The establishment and rapid growth of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, the signing of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment by over 600 college and university presidents, and the increasing number of universities that have shaved millions of dollars off their utilities costs through infrastructural and behavioral change are testament to the increasing attention to, and focus on, sustainability of our operation, and in our curricular delivery.
Sustainability leaders (list with contact information below) from each campus of the UH System have been meeting monthly since spring 2012 in an effort to communicate individual campus priorities, accomplishments, and challenges in addition to sharing best practices. Out of these System Wide Sustainability Committee meetings a sub-committee was formed to plan a process to draft a System-wide Sustainability Policy and develop a communication structure to provide guidance in best practices in energy, curriculum, and other resource management topics for which sustainability is an important concern within the University of Hawai`i System.
A facilitated planning meeting to take place on November 27th and 28th (Tue the 27th will be 4pm-8pm at UH Manoa (specific room TBD); Wed the 28th will be 8am-4:30pm at UH West O'ahu (specific room TBD)) is being organized. Participation from across the System is needed, and ideally should include up to three representatives (Faculty, Student, Staff) from each campus. This important initiative is endorsed by the Office of the President of the University of Hawai`i. Funding to support travel and accommodations for representatives to fly from campuses not on O`ahu, and for the planning meeting, will be provided by Vice President John Morton. Please book your travel and accommodations up front and submit your receipts upon completion of your travels to the Office of the VP for Community Colleges. A specific address for this process will be given to your participants in the next announcement that also indicates room locations and other travel details.
We ask that the Office of the Chancellor, for each UH System Campus, support the UH System Sustainability Committee and its efforts to draft a system-wide approach to policy, curriculum, and innovation in savings and energy production. I further ask that you work with you campus sustainability leadership to identify 1-3 representatives from your campus to participate in the November 27th-28th planning meeting for the policy-drafting workshop.
