Currently, there are a few inconsistencies in ShashiWiki Title pages,
and we need a guideline for consistency and easy search by users. The
followings are the problems I can see in the current ShashiWiki
convention.

(1) Whether or not to use Kabushiki Kaisha in the title page.

Following the library convention, it is better to use the full title
including 'Kabushiki Kaisha,' but so far, many pages don't include it
since it will cause confusion in Shashi(R) list under か section.
(i.e., Kabushiki Kaisha xxxx will be all in the same section
regardless of their company name.)

Suggestion:
(a) If we follow the library convention, Kabushiki Kaisha should be
included, and another page without Kabushiki Kaisha is created and
that page is categorized by Shashi(R) for a list.(Not necessarily by
the same contributor, though; only if you are concerned with the Shashi
(R) list...) In this case, we may need to think about the titles like
Zaidan Hojin, Shadan Hojin, etc.
(b) Kabushiki Kaisha (Zaidan Hojin, Shadan Hojin, etc.) is excluded
from all the titles; or at least for the companies starting with it
(though inconsistency remains).

(2) The use of diacritics (macron)

The library convention uses diacritics for Japanese elongated vowels,
and it is by far better to avoid confusion. However, due to
MediaWiki's limited function, users will not find the pages with
diacritics if they simply type without it.

Suggestion:
(a) We can make a title page with diacritics and redirect another page
without diacritics to it for users to find it.
(b) We do not use diacritics.

I want to add one more issue.

With regard to (1) (Kabushiki Kaisha), usually, banks (including
Shintaku Ginko) are also Kabushiki Kaisha. To the best of my
knowledge, there are a few Gomei/Goshi Gaisha (合名/合資会社) in ShashiWiki
so far. What is the criterion for using Kabushiki Kaisha in the title?
And is it Gomei/Goshi Kaisha or Gaisha?

Hi Hiroshi --

In some of the other wiki projects, such as Nihon no Bijutsu and Jiji Manga, we have a field on the wiki page that contains all the alternate romanizations, keywords, translations, etc.  For example:

http://library.osu.edu/wikis/library/index.php/Nihon_no_Bijutsu_353.

http://library.osu.edu/wikis/library/index.php/Jiji_Manga_1

This works well in making sure that someone finds the page through a Google search.  That is my main concern.  I don't like the MediaWiki search engine, to be honest.

Thank you, Maureen.

Actually, I posted the message from the concern that the new students at Penn. have some problems with making appropriate titles.

I don't know who they are, but they do something strange about the titles, for example, Kawai Ko¯tetsu Kabushiki Kaisha, JFE Suti-ru Kabushiki Kaisha...in addition to their lack of knowledge about MediaWiki's limitations.

As for Kabushiki Kaisha etc., Google search is fine, but I'd prefer to be consistent for the Shashi(R) list, if possible.
