Suggested solutions to some problems by EA Library of UP (University
of Pittsburgh)

• About Kabushiki Kaisha and Macron (the use of diacritics)

Although to inform our patrons whether companies in ShashiWiki are
Kabushiki-kaisha, NPO, government, activity groups, or others is
important, we are limited to use the web of Wikipedia that is not able
to have good functions like Google.

We should try giving our patrons information as much as we have.
Therefore, I bring up a solution with Mr. Good as follows;
1. Title page should be simple as possible, so just it has a company
name.
2. To inform social status of a company, Kabushiki-kaisha would be
better if it comes after the company name in Japanese.
*basically should be translated fully from the company name in
Japanese
3. To inform a company name in English, only if it has and is correct,
would be good for our patrons.
An example: http://library.osu.edu/wikis/shashidb/index.php/Kanto_Tokushu_Seiko

To inform macron is also important to our patrons. The better
suggested solution that we made is that a company name with
diacritical symbols is described after the company name in Japanese.
It comes at third title.

• About mentioned “the criterion for using Kabushiki Kaisha in the
title”:

This article would help understand some differences between “gomei-
kaisha” and “kabushiki-kaisha”.

• To Hiroshi-san,
I apologize that I would bring up some inconsistencies in ShashiWiki
that confused and annoyed you. Basically, all was me based on lack of
knowledge (plus experience). However, there are some explanations that
you could understand why.

That “something strange about the titles, for example, Kawai Ko ̄tetsu
Kabushiki Kaisha” came from which I did copy and paste company names
from OCLC, trying to put macron for patrons who can read with
diacritical symbols. However, the Wikipedia web does not recognize
vowels and macron as one letter.

There was a simple mistake about JFE-Stiru, made a gap between the
Romanization of Japanese and the name that a company calls itself.

I will be careful on those problems. Please point out and teach me
when we make mistakes. Thanks.

Dear Kenzaburo-san,

I was not annoyed by your entries, but I simply wanted to attract our
attention to the titles. Besides, I was also long wondering how I
should make appropriate titles since my predecessors also made
inconsistent title pages. So, your suggested guideline is very
helpful, and don't worry about what you are doing. I was also
suggested that each page (not title) include every possible
transliteration practice so that the user can find the page via Google
and other search engines.

As you pointed out, MediaWiki function is quite limited and sometimes
does something strange. As for the pages of your error, there are two
options. One is to redirect the page to the right one, if it is also a
possible error for the users; and the other is to redirect it to
"Wrong Page," when the page is just meaningless practice page, and we
will eventually delete it from the Wiki

In fact, I do not own ShashiWiki, and just developed certain
categories, such as Shashi(J) and (R) and other pages, thinking it
would give better impression to Japanese companies when we request
their shashi. Your consideration about the patrons is quite
reasonable. So, please don't worry.

Hiroshi
