The top button pops off Quinn’s school uniform – a little plaid dress – while I’m dressing her for school. I can have it back in shape in 2-3 minutes, get her to class on time. I could, if I had a needle and thread. I don’t, not accessible.
No choice but to put her in one with all its buttons. Only the others aren’t ready. They're clean but pretty accordioned. Can’t iron now. We’d be late. Bad example.
So I shook one a few times. Hard. It cracked like a whip.
“Daddy, why you do that?”
And dressed her. (Fact: Shaking doesn’t remove wrinkles, no matter the velocity. The data were conclusive.)
She looked a bit of a mess. Cute but unkempt.
My fault for not having a needle, the right instrument for a simple task. I wasn’t prepared.
There are stories. And there are instrumental stories, ones that can be used deliberately to achieve specific objectives.
Sew what?
My objective: Introduce the term instrumental story so you remember it, use it. Use them.
Instrumental stories don't need to be complicated. They need to do the job. Just like needle and thread.
Plot Wolf helps people and companies develop and deliver instrumental stories for sales, fundraising, leadership communication, explaining complicated ideas, whatever. Sometimes they're simple. Sometimes they're more complex. Depends on the objectives, of course.
