The “Christmas in October” is a great volunteer opportunity that the club should consider doing.

Newspaper students named finalists for national awards

Three students from the 2009-2010 staff of The Campus Ledger, the student newspaper of Johnson County Community College, were named finalists in a national contest sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press.

Designer Rob Mitchell and photographer Lily Sisay were named finalists in the newsmagazine cover category for the Jan. 29, 2010, issue of The Campus Ledger depicting a student’s trip to the Gaza.

Cartoonist Vince Medellin was named a finalist in the cartooning category twice – once for his back-page comic, Skyline, and the other for his other random comics that occurred on inside pages of The Campus Ledger throughout the year.  Medellin won the contest in 2009 and hopes to repeat with his chances of winning doubled this year.

Judges for the Associated Collegiate Press chose only six finalists in the news magazine cover category from a total of 483 design entries. In the cartooning category, Medellin filled two of the six finalists’ spots, and 199 entries were received.

The winners of each category will be announced Oct. 30 at the National College Media Convention in Louisville, Ky.

Volunteers needed for Christmas in October on Oct. 9

Once again JCCC is participating in Christmas in October--the nation’s largest one-day home rehabilitation program.

Kansas City’s Christmas in October is dedicated to helping elderly and needy homeowners with repairs to make their homes safer and a little more comfortable as winter approaches. This year, more than 5,000 volunteers will be working on 400 to 500 homes around the Kansas City metropolitan area.

JCCC’s volunteers will be working on homes in Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday, Oct. 9.

No particular home repair skills are required for volunteering, just a willingness to help out.

If you’re interested in participating in Christmas in October or want more information, please contact Michael Hembree at mhem...@jccc.edu or ext. 3705.
