Hi All,

With all the recent activity around HTML5 I wanted to bring up a proposal for discussion.

I think we can all agree that HTML5 is a large cross-cutting concern for many projects at JBoss - right?  Lots of project will be producing HTML5 markup, using websockets, processing offline storage, using CSS3, and likely be involved with the standardization efforts through W3C, JCP, and others.

Also, as we've briefly mentioned via email I think it is important to separate out what is HTML5, and its relationship to other projects.  RichFaces, Errai, and POH5 are all distinct client technologies with varying degrees of overlap.  None of them should "own" HTML5, but they all have keen interests in it.  While at the same time other projects like JBoss AS, Torquebox, Arquillian, Infinispan, etc.. all have their own interests with HTML5.

A place where all of the developers, and projects can come together around common HTML5 initiatives, centralize broad requirements, and discuss standards involvement would be great!

So, much like Trailblazer[1], Testing[2], and Social[3] I would like to propose and discuss the creation of an HTML5 SIG at JBoss.  A SIG allows a place for collaboration, and centralization of ideas, while still having the various projects and group clearly free to move as needed for their own requirements.

This would be where we could track and collaborate on W3C/JCP involvement and plans, introduce new users to HTML5 and where it plays a role in JBoss, provide links out to more information and projects, discuss new concepts and plans around HTML5, etc....

So what do you all think?

-Jay

Btw, just to provide a bit more context for my support.

The JBoss Testing SIG has proved to be extremely useful for exploring ideas that we aren't sure align with a project or that we even want to explore. In other words, it allows conversations to take place that otherwise wouldn't have. It broadens our thinking. These are all key drivers for innovation.

Perfect!  That is exactly what I'm hoping can happen here!

Here's an excellent resource we might want to share on this SIG:

Excellent link, I think I've run into that before myself.  I think this SIG will be a great place for links like this.

I'd like to give some more time for others to respond, then I'll go ahead and create the SIG as no one has brought up any concerns.

I think Brian will be directly interested in this, since he is working on RichFaces bootstrap and HTML5 now.

Yes, I'm fully interested in having a forum in which we can speak about HTML 5 issues in general, and not necessarily in the context of a specific project.

Well, I generally support *all* efforts to increase cross-communication across projects. So +1 on this for me, too.

I rarely say "me too", but when I do, it's in cases like this.

this is a good opportunity for curious community members to have a better overview of the different initiatives related to html5, gives a vision of jboss' strategy and a better visibility to figure out where to contribute

Excellent, I think that is more than enough support for this.

I'll get this created, at least a shell tomorrow or early next week.

I rarely write code, but when I do, I write PERL.

You consider your Java stuff art not code. It is known.
