The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja.[3] The song "Paadava Un Paadalai" uses the conga, a percussion commonly used in Afro-Cuban genres.[4] The song "Paadum Vanambadi" is set in the raga known as Patdeep,[5] while "Devan Kovil" is set in Yamunakalyani.[6]

Jayamanmadhan of Kalki wrote Sundarrajan can be praised for many things, for the way the poignant story has been told elegantly, for creating characters that stand out in the mind and not rushing till the intermission to insert songs.[7]

Excellent choice for a song in the theme/content format (as defined) sung by PS. Speaking somewhat broadly, the immersive effect of a song multiplies manifold when theme, tune and good lines cohere. Those are deep longings of a woman dreaming of marriage and a gratifying relationship and the song unambiguously drives this home.

One classic example off the top of my head is Senthamizh nattu thamizhachiye (that Sathyaraj song from Vandicholai Chinrasu). Its a gorgeously cute song in the vintage 90s ARRahman style. But my, are the lyrics regressive!

@Madan:
Lol, a worthy contender for sure. Though the music too is generic and frivolous, so the contrast is not as overwhelming. Also, any other Tamil examples you can think of? (My exposure to Hindi music is unfortunately limited to early 2000s DJ remixes and Pak-based Emraan Hashmi songs)

Later in the song, the sequence gets reversed. Both of them are sitting on the opposite sides of a rickshaw. He stands up, leans on her, making her desire come alive, pulls the hood of the rickshaw and leans back.

What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed? I think it is "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna". The thing I like about this song is that Ilayaraja has cleverly used a "happy" tune for a sad situation in the film. What do you guys think?
