Hi guys,

After much sweating, I got jBase running on Kubuntu 7.10 (Desktop
version). I want to test jBase there before migrating to Ubuntu Server
(and Linux, in general).

Problem is, i dont know how to connect to the jbase telnet server. I
am arguing for Windows point of view. In Windows, a jBase installation
automatically installs and configures telned service.

My question is, what is the Linux equivalent and how do I get it
running? The jBASE version is jBASE 4.1.5.19

Will really appreciate your assistance.

PS: I am very willing to share info on basic install of jBase on
Ubuntu system.

Is there a specific reason you want to run telnet? All traffic
including passwords are sent in clear text. SSH is secure and much
easier to configure and maintain. If you are in a situation where you
have to use telnet, most likely you will have to install and configure
telnetd. There is a mini-tutorial here:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/setting-up-a-telnet-server-in-ubuntu.html

I strongly recommend SSH.

Good luck,

Lance

Cool - you are a better man than me - I can't get the latest version (4.1.5.20) to run on 64 bit Ubunty Hardy (as a 32 bit program) as the stupid license daemons crash. I can't get devsup or Temenos to acknowledge me either (how the mighty can fall ;-).

This is Linux so there are no jBASE specific things in this area. Usually though Linux uses sshd (in one form or another) and you use a client like Putty or SecureCRT. You have to start the sshd and configure it to autostart (loads of info on this on the web). However, if you don't have a ssh cleint, you can also start the Linux telnet server (again just see the web in general for how to do this on Ubuntu).

You find that jSlimServer actually runs?

Thanks guys for the help.

So if I install telnet or ssh, can users running globus desktop from
winxp connect to the jbase and Globus db?

PS: Av uploaded a pdf on the steps I followed to install jBase
4.1.5.19 on Kubuntu. Hope it will help somebody

Let me preface by saying I have no experience with Globus. If all you
need when running jBASE on windows is a telnet server, then running
sshd or telnetd will provide the same functionality. Provided the
Globus Desktop application supports SSH, you really should run that.

Yes, if they are connecting via telnet (old style Globus) and you start teh telnet daemon, but if they are using the T24 connection manager stuff, then you will need to be running that on the server as well. I am pretty sure that that works on all systems ;-)

I am sure it will, though I still cannot get jSlimServer to run on Ubuntu Hardy and no reply from devsup ;-)

Thanks guys.

Telnet and ssh sorted me out. Globus desktop runs on Windows machines
and relies on telnet (as Jim noted above) so I have to run both and
they are working erfect.

I am not using the connection manager stuff.

By the way, Jim, did you get jBase to run on Hardy?

Thank you all for your help.

Cool beans.

Yes - see my post about this of a week or so ago (use the google web site for the group). However, it isn't a perfect solution because the jSlimServer process, while i will at least start up and run now, seems to core dump about once a day and sometimes more. Not really an issue for single man development, but no good for production of course. Apparently there will be a patch for this in July.
