Redbridge Music Lounge and the Green Fair Music Club invite you to join us this weekend at their 16th Midsummer Music Fest takes place on Saturday 30 June at Ken Aston Square in Barkingside High Street outside the swimming pool at Fulwell Cross from 10am to 5pm. The Music Fest continues in Valentines Park on Sunday 1 July from 10.30am to 8pm beside the cafe, near the children's playground and the boating lake. The entertainment is entirely free.

The weekend features almost 30 different acts offering a wide range of musical styles and genres from folk, pop, blues and soul to jazz, rock and classical - something for all tastes and performed by all musicians 'for free, for fun, for everyone'. The whole event is an entirely voluntary-run celebration of live music featuring many of the best and brightest talent from Redbridge and the surrounding area. Bring your family and friends, bring a picnic or enjoy lunch and other refreshments from the cafe

Watch out also for details (coming very soon!) of our live music programme at the Fairlop Fair on Saturday 7 July and our next Best of the Music Fest session in the Walled Garden at Valentines Mansion on Sunday 8 July!

Oxfam Southend, on 37 Southchurch Road (South East corner of the Victoria Shopping Centre) SS1 2NG on Sunday 22nd July are holding a Vinyl Sunday and will be playing sample tracks from Albums by Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and many others, between 11am and 5pm. If you have any vinyl records that you are no longer playing, what better way to Help Fight Poverty than by donating them to Oxfam, and please sign-up to Gift Aid (where appropriate) for that extra 25% for your donation.

Making his debut appearance here will be young multi instrumentalist, Ewan Bleach, carving out a considerable reputation on the international jazz scene. Ewan is a specialist in early jazz styles and has a wide and diverse repertoire. He is particularly interested in exploring rare old songs, from the rough raggy blues songs of the twenties to the rich luscious ballads of the early 40s. A true beacon, lighting the way to the future of hot jazz, Ewan is a prime mover on the new London Jazz scene, where young musicians are re-establishing a jazz scene, decimated in recent years. He regularly visits New Orleans to soak up the atmosphere of the Crescent city and to draw inspiration. He has toured with the city's premier traditional jazz band, Tuba Skinny, and appears at festivals all over Europe.
Piano professor, Martin Litton, an acknowledged expert in early piano styles, bassist, Keith Donald and John Petters drums will complete the line-up. Don’t miss this one.

The Hadleigh Jazz Club trip to St Martin In The Fields for Paul Higgs Pavane gig on Tuesday August 28th. Our headline act is the sensational duo of Jason Rebello, pianist for Sting for a number of years and Jeff Beck, accompanied by saxophonist Tim Garland. This'll be amazing! Saturday 28th July from 7.00pm till late will feature The Daniel Parker Trio, a regular at The Writtle Jazz Festival, The Simon Hurley Quartet and our headline act at 9.00pm is The Fellowship. Our very own Saxophonist Zak Barrett, with Pete Riley on Drums, Seth Govan on Bass, John Leo Dutton on keys and of course Guthrie Govan on Guitar!

The lineup for Sunday 29th July from noon till 9.00pm is nearly finalised. We welcome The Elliot Weight Trio, The Dan Banks Quintet, The Melvin Beddow Big Band and the Frank Weatherly Trio to the Village Hall. The Rose and Crown will host Solar, featuring Vocalist Karin Lou Reid visiting the UK from New Zealand. The Wheatsheaf will see the return of The Dave Mascall Duo.
The Marquee on the Village green kicks off at 1.00pm with The Neil Angilly Trio, Noel Mcullah and The Derek Nash band at 2.15pm, The Sarah O'Shea band at 3.30pm. We're waiting to confirm the act for 4.45pm, but we finish with Sunchaser at 6pm and Harry Funk from 7.15pm!

The Jazz Centre UK celebrates the heritage, culture and future of Jazz Women. From ragtime, through swing and fusion to contemporary it goes out at 7pm every Wednesday and is repeated at 7am the following morning (Thursday). There is no catch-up service . . . so listen live, or the following morning!

Wednesday 4th July, being American Independence Day, will feature Frank Griffith, American saxophonist, clarinettist and arranger who has worked closely with singer Tina May. He will be live in the studio, chatting!

Iain performs classic Jazz Swing standards with golden era charm, and a contemporary edge! We welcome back at member's request Iain Mackenzie, one of the most in demand jazz and big band singers in the UK, having performed with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the BBC Big Band. Iain is currently the principle male vocalist for the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, and section leader for the Ronnie Scott’s Singers - The iTones. Iain will have completed singing in his 8th UK tour with Brendan Cole’s (Strictly Come Dancing) All Night Long’ show – which toured Jan - March 2018

Graham Harvey has been the principle pianist on several London West End Shows including Witches of Eastwick, The Full Monty, Ragtime, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2006 Graham became the pianist with for Stacey Kent and more recently he’s worked with Aretha Franklin and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

11^th July – Kenny Ball’s Greatest Hits

In the 1960’s the great bands of Ball, Barber and Bilk packed out theatres, dance halls and jazz clubs all over the world and enjoyed chart success. One of the most successful was Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, frequently in the charts with songs such as Samantha, I Wanna Be Like You and his biggest hit Midnight In Moscow, not to mention the residencies on the Morecambe & Wise Show and Saturday Night At The Mill. It was one of the great bands and with these top jazz musicians, you will be transported back to that time. Ian Bateman, himself a part of this scene as a member of the bands of Acker Bilk and Terry Lightfoot (frequently deputising in the bands of Kenny Ball and Humphrey Lyttelton), has made the bold decision to keep the flag flying for British jazz. Hot on the heels of his very successful Louis Armstrong tribute shows with the Bateman Brothers Jazz Band, he has put this exciting new show together to celebrate one of the most exciting British jazz bands of all time.

Ian’s band is the only one out there capable of performing my Father’s music with the power and excitement of the original band. Kenny loved the Bateman Brothers Jazz Band and I’m sure he would be pleased that through this show, his hit songs will endure in the best possible way ... Sharon Scott, our regular Scottish songstress will be recalling her favourite Jazz Divas from Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee and others with the tunes that made them headliners with countless hits. Tonight she will be very ably accompanied by our other guest, Dominic Ashworth.
Dominic Ashworth, guitar, returns from a busy schedule on the music scene where he is in great demand with such great groups as ‘Picante’, ‘Rag & Bone Club’, and ‘The Dream Band’ and more recently with Julian Stringle’s latest show ‘It’s Clazzical’ a vibrant mix of Latin and classically composed numbers with an added quartet of strings. Dominic’s style and experience covers the complete spectrum of music genres and is a favourite with many among our audience, so will be at total ease accompanying Sharon whatever programme she chooses.

Neale Ridding, flute, is yet another multi-instrumentalist with over thirty years experience as a professional musician and spent some time as a member of the 1980’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra. His musical career began by playing the piano, but he moved quickly onto alto saxophone and particularly flute, of whom many, consider him to be one of the country’s leading exponents, and is also very active as a music teacher, This'll be Neale’s first visit so be sure to give him a warm welcome.

Tuesday, 25th September - ELLINGTON TO BASIE featuring JEFF WILLIAMS, trombone, & PETE COOPER, trumpet, with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.

Pete Cooper, trumpet, and long time cohort of Jeff’s, will be making his first visit to the Club. He began playing at the age of eleven whilst at school with friends and later went on to play with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra before running a successful printing business twenty five years ago, for a more reliable income. Before that he played for several musical theatre shows touring the country and also for TV programmes and advertisements and has recorded and toured with Buddy Greco and Frankie Lane, and played the Royal Albert Hall with the great John Williams. He has guested with the Danish Radio Big Band, the renowned Nick Ross Orchestra and the Len Phillips Big Band. Another first time guest musician, sure to receive a warm reception.

Jim is a truly original player in modern jazz guitar. He moved from Glasgowto London in 1969, going on to work in the groups of Pete Brown, Brian Auger, Vinegar Joe and Kokomo. In 1975 whilst touring the US with the Average White Band, Jim met sax player Dick Morrissey. They began a 15-year association in legendary British jazz funk band Morrisey Mullen where Jim found critical notice as joint leader. After, he worked with vocalist Claire Martin and formed a series of quartets.
Jim has played and recorded with Mose Allison, Hamish Stuart, Joanna Eden, Tam White, Claire Martin, Mike Carr, Jimmy Witherspoon, Dave O'Higgins and Georgie Fame, Sinan Alimanović, David Tughan and Frank Holder. He has recorded as part of The AllStars, a collective of session musicians on their McCartney-produced album All About the Music, alongside guests Jocelyn Brown, Hamish Stuart and Angelo Starr. Twice winner of 'Best Guitar' - BT jazz awards and 'Best Guitar' - 2000 British Jazz Awards.
Mike Gorman was born in Sheffield. After studying in Manchester, he moved to London in 1995 to attend the Guildhall School of Music, He has since established himself as one of the UK's leading jazz pianists and organists, performing with virtually every UK horn player and vocalist of note - Don Weller, Bobby Wellins, Alan Skidmore, Georgie Fame, Peter King, Alan Barnes, Dave Cliff, Stacey Kent, Guy Barker etc. Mike is a key member of the Jim Mullen Organ Trio, with whom he has recorded 3 acclaimed albums. In great demand as a session player touring and recording with a variety of artists - Boy George, Mica Paris, Van Morrison, Hamish Stuart, Marty Pellow, Marlena Shaw, Gwen McCrae, Andrea Bocelli and Tom Robinson. Mike worked with many US artists, including Jimmy Witherspoon, Ken Peplowski, Bill Watrous, Lanny Morgan and Marlena Shaw. His debut album "The Maze" named Jazz CD of the Month in Nov '02 BBC Music Magazine.

1^st – Christine and the Stackyard Stompers. Playing 1920s classic jazz, led by Christine Woodcock on trombone and vocals, the Stackyard Stompers pay tribute to the jazz greats King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and Clarence Williams.

8^th – Paula Jackman’s Jazzmen. Paula Jackman blowing clarinet leads her Jazzmen all the way from deepest Cambridgeshire. The six-piece jazz band with the usual front line of trumpet, clarinet and trombone play their very own brand of Dixieland jazz as well as traditional jazz.

15^th – Iris Harmon and Her Boys. Iris and ‘Her Boys’ returns to the club by popular demand. Iris sings old and new jazz numbers in her own inimitable style.

22^nd – George Tidiman’s All Stars. George leads his band of stars. Another great session of foot-tapping traditional jazz and George’s jokes and humour.

29^th – The Jack Clifford Swingtette. Another wonderful end to the month with an evening of jazz standards from the Swingtette. Jack blowing clarinet and alto sax leads his ensemble with rhythm section of regulars Tim Huskisson on piano, Alan Clarke drums and Roger Curphy bass.

5^th – Jackie Free’s Chicagoans. Jackie has blown his trombone many times at the club with other bands. This is the first time at the club, however, that he’s brought his Chicagoans band with him. He formed the Chicagoans in 1980 and they been playing that city’s style of jazz ever since.

12^th – Mike Barry’s New Uptown Gang. Mike on trumpet leads his new gang which includes Mike Holt blowing trombone, Goff Dubber blowing reeds and Roger Curphey on double bass. The Gang play old and not so old tunes including classic and traditional jazz numbers.

19^th – Bob Dwyer’s Bix & Pieces. Bob Dwyer playing trombone leads his popular band with Max Emmons trumpet and blues harmonica, and Bernie Holden reeds. The band plays mainly in the style of the legendry Bix Beiderbecke. Listen out for John Bayne’s bass saxophone.

26^th – The Jack Clifford Swingtette. Another wonderful end to the month with an evening of traditional and jazz standards from the Swingtette. Jack blowing clarinet and alto sax leads his ensemble with rhythm section of regulars Tim Huskisson on piano, Alan Clarke drums and Roger Curphy bass.

Local lead vocalist Julia started singing at school before graduating to The Melvin Beddow Big Band at aged 17. Various pop, rock and funk function line ups followed before Julia tried a Jazz Summer School at the Guildhall and in 1997 she attended the 1^st Essex Easter Jazz Course. Vocal tutor (and later Julia’s mentor) BBC Male Jazz vocalist of the year Ian Shaw pointed out Julia’s voice to fellow tutor and guitarist Tony Sandeman, who later invited her up to sing some tunes with legendary jazz funk combo ‘C’ Level. As a singer/songwriter she has collaborated with jazz guitarist Dave Mascall and released songs on his Acid Lounge cd's. On the night Julia's band includes Dan Banks on keyboards, Tony Sandeman on guitar, Andy Staples on bass and Marc Cecil on drums.

May 2018 update. MehrClef's preparations for the Summer Jazz Course are in full swing. The teaching rooms we will use at Chichester all have Steinway Grand Pianos including the Essex and Boston range. A musician's dream, especially for pianists. The Elizabeth Swan Room, which we will use both for teaching and our nightly Jazz Club, is kitted out with a pro PA system. The Tutor and Student Concerts will be held in the Chapel, the University's official Concert venue.

Jazz Workshop
The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.  The music used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
Saxophone Workshop
The workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment.  Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer.  This includes music theory, methods of practice, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone.  This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on Classical and Jazz.

Weekly Saturday Jazz Workshops in Orpington (SE London) for anyone, any age, on any instrument, interested in developing their improvising skills and musicianship. It is a practical, performance based approach to learning in a nurturing group. Through the playing and study of standard jazz repertoire we cover some of the requirements for improvising including ear training, rhythmic skills, developing your harmonic understanding, learning transcriptions of some classic recordings and building a jazz vocabulary. The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy runs weekly in Hackney on Saturday afternoons, under the artistic direction of internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer Julian Joseph, offering talented young instrumentalists and vocalists aged 11-24, the opportunity to work with acclaimed jazz artists to develop their skills through a curriculum underpinned by an introduction to the American roots of jazz.

The Hadleigh Jazz Club trip to St Martin In The Fields for Paul Higgs Pavane gig on Tuesday August 28th. John Withers makes another welcome return, but this time with his magical vibraphone to bring you a musical pot pourri of tunes, hence, Old, New and Blue to suit everybody's taste and will accompany the experienced Neale Ridding who is making his debut at the Club. This can be considered a reunion as both played together many years ago when John had a residency at The Heybridge Country Club.
Neale Ridding, flute, is yet another multi-instrumentalist with over thirty years experience as a professional musician and spent some time as a member of the 1980’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra. His musical career began by playing the piano, but he moved quickly onto alto saxophone and particularly flute, of whom many, consider him to be one of the country’s leading exponents, and is also very active as a music teacher, This'll be Neale’s first visit so be sure to give him a warm welcome.

Tuesday, 25th September - ELLINGTON TO BASIE featuring JEFF WILLIAMS, trombone, & PETE COOPER, trumpet, with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.

Jeff Williams, making his third visit to the Club with his trusted trombone playing with a style full of spirit, exuberance and inventiveness, having collaborated with a host of star musicians for over a score or more years. His main influences of swing music came from the 30’s onwards mainly from the Ellington, Basie and Dorsey bands. Jeff now leads the Mississipi Swamp Dogs, a New Orleans Blues sextet that performs at notable London venues as Boisdales, Ronnie Scotts, Bulls Head, and The Hideaway. He is also a member of the Harleem Meer Cats a group with music roots in replicating New Yorks’ Cotton Club on the jazz circuits.
Pete Cooper, trumpet, and long time cohort of Jeff’s, will be making his first visit to the Club. He began playing at the age of eleven whilst at school with friends and later went on to play with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra before running a successful printing business twenty five years ago, for a more reliable income. Before that he played for several musical theatre shows touring the country and also for TV programmes and advertisements and has recorded and toured with Buddy Greco and Frankie Lane, and played the Royal Albert Hall with the great John Williams. He has guested with the Danish Radio Big Band, the renowned Nick Ross Orchestra and the Len Phillips Big Band. Another first time guest musician, sure to receive a warm reception.

Allison Neale Saxophone, Alex Bryson piano, Darren Macarthy bass and Matt Fishwick drums.

Allison, who is no stranger to Marigolds, was born in the USA when her British father was working for Boeing in Seattle and came to the UK as a young child. She originally started playing flute when about eight years old and although classically trained on flute she started playing saxophone in her mid-teens. Allison was heavily influenced by listening to her father’s records, in particular those of West Coast Jazz musicians like Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz, the Brubeck Quartet, Paul Desmond, Jim Hall and Chet Baker, Bill Evans. She has a particular affinity with Paul Desmond and Art Pepper and the beautifully crafted lines of her compositions often evoke the spirit of those players. As a strong advocate of the melodic West Coast style she has performed alongside leading international artists such as Adelaide Hall and Bud Shank and more recently tenorist Scott Hamilton as well as featuring in both the John Dankworth ‘Generations‘ Band and the “Back to Basie’ Orchestra. She frequently tours the UK and has two CDs to her name ‘Melody Express’ with guitarist Dave Cliff and ‘Blue Concept’ with trumpeter Gary Kavanagh, both on 33 Records. Her third CD " I Wished on the Moon was released in Jan 2015 features her quartet and Milt Jackson influenced vibraphonist Nat Steele.

Our club plays jazz every second Wednesday of the month – the next one is August 8th! Come and join us with the truly wonderful vocalist Val Wiseman.

The theme for the night will be ‘Divas of Swing’ – and Val knows how to swing! She will be backed by our great rhythm section with Tim Huskisson (keyboard), Alan Clarke (drums), and Roger Curphy on bass. Digby Fairweather (trumpet) will be joining the group to complete the line-up. So expect a really entertaining evening of music. Remember there is no entrance fee and parking is free and easy around the Cricketers.
