From Lynn Hammond. chair of the Friends of Redbridge Music School:  The new budget proposed by the council plans to remove all funding from Redbridge Music Service – £185,000 in 2015/16 and £185,000 again in 2016/17.  As part of these cuts, the council proposes to privatise our hire agreements and the instrument centre and change teachers' contracts of employment.  We need to let them know that we do not want this to happen. We need to safeguard the future of music education in our borough.

If you wish to support us, please contact your local councillors.  We have set up pages on Twitter #HandsOffRMS and Facebook 'Hands Off Redbridge Music Service' and have produced posters and leaflets. These are available on Facebook or we can forward copies by email.  Please let your friends know, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and spread the word.  If you would like to be kept informed, please email us at friendsofredbri...@gmail.com

9th March 2015:   Dave Grant – drums, & his Carlton Jazz

Gary Wood – trumpet; Derek Clenshaw – trombone; Martin Nickless – clarinet; Paul Higgs – keyboard; Ted Simkins – double-bass
Among the club’s firmest favourites (I’ve heard them 28 times!) are Carlton Jazz. As befits the name, it’s a highly distinguished outfit, led by the unassuming man seated behind the drum kit, accompanying his superb musicians with all the subtle sensitivity of a Shelly Manne. The style is eclectic, from Dixieland to Latin American. Dave says: “I’ve never been an out and out Trad player, veering more towards the Swing of Benny Goodman”. With such great players as trombone wizard Derek Clenshaw on show, a great evening of upper-class jazz is guaranteed.

16th March 2015:   Colin Bray – vibes & soprano sax, & his Quintet

Duncan Hemstock – clarinet; Tim Huskisson – keyboard; Roger Curphey – bass; John Petters – drums.  To some performers, jazz is a serious business. Not so multi-instrumentalist Colin Bray. The level of musicianship may be seriously high but, with a mischievous grin, he sets about entertaining his audience, be it on piano, soprano sax or vibraphone, with a true cabaret performance. He formed his Quintet a couple of years ago in order to play Benny Goodman-style interpretations of the Great American Songbook. And (as the names tell you) his Quintet is truly an “all-star” group, individually well known to us, but making their Theydon Jazz Club debut as the CBQ. This is one concert you simply must not miss!

23rd March 2015:   Jackie Free – trombone, & his Chicagoans

Peter Rudeforth – trumpet; John Crocker – clarinet & tenor sax; Tim Huskisson – keyboard; Murray Salmon – bass; Martin Guy – drums.  For jazz fans ‘the best things in life are Free’ – Jackie Free, that is, and his superlative Chicagoans. Louis Armstrong, no less, described him as “a fine trombone man”. Not only does Jackie share his trombone artistry with another great octogenarian, Chris Barber, but his magnificent front line has Barber’s trumpeter, the peerless Peter Rudeforth, and a Barber stalwart for 35 years, John Crocker. As the title of their last CD announces, hear them Strike Up The Band. RC

30th March 2015  -  Carol Braithwaite – vocals, & her Jazz Crew

Alan Gresty – trumpet; John Crocker – clarinet & tenor sax; Tim Huskisson – keyboard; Roger Curphey – bass; Mike Barry – drums.  A great Theydon Jazz Club favourite, and an in-demand singer for many years in and around Essex, London and Kent, Carol brings echoes of Ella Fitzgerald and Ottilie Patterson to her stylish performances. And she surrounds herself with top quality musicians. So, take a mix of swing, wonderful ballads, traditional jazz and the Great American Songbook, add the odd saucy lyric and a sprinkling of Latin, and you have a typical idea of what to expect from Carol Braithwaite’s Jazz Crew: a great evening. RC (and yes, it is Mike Barry on drums – a different one)

13th March - The Untouchablestheuntouchablesblues.com

Keith Parker harp and vocals, Peter Ellison guitar and vocals, Paul 'Chuck' Green doghouse bass and Malcolm 'Eddie the Legend' Buckland drums.
The Untouchables are champions of raw blues, basing their sound on the swinging soul of the great artists who recorded for Chess Records in the 50s. With a string bass, a stripped down drum kit, a cranked guitar through a hot valve amp and a wailing harp, this band turns any venue into a rocking juke joint.
It has been said that, “The Untouchables play sparse, tasteful Chicago blues. Not blues rock but tight, swinging, focussed, authentic sounding urban blues, with every element honed to its bare essentials in an unostentatious display of taste and restraint’ and ‘The band have lived and breathed the style until it's so much a part of them that it oozes out of their pores. If you like Little Walter, Bo Diddley or Willie Dixon, then this is as close as you’ll get to seeing them live. Utterly superb."

27th March - The Noemi Nuti Quintet with Quentin Collins: http://noeminuti.com & http://www.quentincollins.com

Born and raised in New York City of Italian descent, Noemi Nuti is an up-and-coming jazz vocalist and songwriter residing in London. Noemi studied music at Brunel University where jazz vocal improvisation became her driving focus and further studied improvisation and composition at Trinity College of Music.  She toured the UK as part of the Tomorrow’s Warrior’s project, ‘Jazz Alive’ and has taken part in the London Jazz Festival on a number of occasions and been involved in a number of jazz projects with well-known jazz musicians including being a regular with NYJO.  With a love of Brazilian music Noemi has toured Brazil and has formed her own band playing contemporary jazz within a Brazilian music frame.
Quentin Collins is one of Europe's most in-demand trumpet players, both as a band leader and player. He has a wealth of experience working with many other well-known musicians and as a much sought after session musician playing across many genres. Over the years, Quentin has toured extensively both in the UK and abroad as well as holding several residencies. He is no stranger to the recording studios both in his own right and for other musicians as well as broadcasting on radio and TV.
Of late Quentin has taken on the role of producer and was asked by Noemi to co-produce her debut release called, ‘ Nice to Meet You’.

10th April - Blues Abuse: http://www.bluesabuse.com/Blues_Abuse/Welcome.html

Steve Morrison vocals and guitar, Alan Glen harmonica and Al Hughes drums.

Back at Marigolds by popular demand this oiginal 3 piece blues combo is led by guitarist Steve Morrison and features virtuoso harmonica playing by Alan Glen (ex Yardbird) and the creative but always sensitive rhythms of Al Hughes on drums. Steve has developed a guitar technique that enables him to play lead, rhythm and bass at the same time (it has to be seen to be believed) creating driving rhythms complementing his slide-guitar.  All three play in a variety of line-ups and with the best of musicians but together they are the sensational Blues Abuse.

24th April - The Derek Nash Quartet: http://www.dereknash.com

Derek Nash saxophone, Dominic Ashworth guitar, Andy Staples bass and Marc Cecil drums.

Derek is the leader of award-winning 'Sax Appeal' (five CDs on Jazzizit records) and co-Leader of funk band "Protect the Beat". As a full-time member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 2004, he has worked alongside Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Lulu, Alison Moyet, Tom Jones and many others.  He has also played in Jack Bruce Big Blues Band and Ronnie Scotts Blues Explosion. In the 2000 British Jazz Awards, he was in the top ten of six different categories.

He has performed with Dave and Don Grusin, Nelson Rangell, Spike Robinson (their CD won a British Jazz award in 2001), Alan Barnes, Dave O'Higgins, Mornington Lockett, Barbara Thompson and Tim Garland.  At his Clowns Pocket Recording Studio, he is a respected recording engineer and producer and has recorded albums for Dave O'Higgins, Jamie Cullum (gold disc for 'Pointless Nostalgic'), Bobby Wellins, Alan Barnes, Tony Remy, Trudy Kerr, Martin Drew and many others.

He has released three solo albums - 'Setting New Standards' alongside Clark Tracey and Alec Dankworth (Jazzizit JITCD 9814), 'Snapshot' alongside Geoff Gascoyne, Jan Lundgren and Steve Brown (Jazzizit JITCD0951)and "Joyriding alongside Dave Newton, Geoff Gascoyne and Sebastiaan de Krom ( 2011 Jazzizit JITCD 1156)".  He is also the writer and arranger of many TV and radio themes.

Sunday 22nd March - ‘1960’ Ben Pringle Trio

‘1960’ are a jazz trio comprising Ben Pringle on piano, Louis Thorne on bass and Andy Vellacott on drums. The groups repertoire covers a range of jazz piano approaches from swing & stride through bebop & Latin to more modern interpretations of standards as well as unusual takes on some pop classics and originals.

Sunday 29th March - Helen Abbey Trio

This Trio fronted by jazz and soul singer Helen Abbey mixes classical/Latin/blues jazz numbers with some of her own original penned compositions.   Helen excels with her free flowing and crystal clear vocals, interpreting the lyrics in her own elegant style. She is very ably supported on keyboards by the classy musicianship of Matt Keane and the sympathetic rhythmic drumming of Alex Best.  A hugely satisfying sound.

Sunday 12th April - Rob James Trio

Rob’s repertoire of over 300 songs covers a wide variety of styles including Light Pop, Jazz, Ballroom, Blues, Soul, Rock and Roll and Easy Listening. He enjoys performing songs from The Great American Songbook as well as from his own songs in the jazz and blues style.

Sunday 26th April - ‘Q3’ Martin Hallmark Trio

Martin Hallmark’s jazz trio, the enigmatically named Q3, are relatively new in the area and a breath of fresh air, as they steer clear of familiar jazz standards and ‘Real Book’ war horses in favour of largely original material. As a pianist leader Martin also composes much of the new tunes and changes, also this music has an urgency and intelligence that demands close listening. Having recently studied with top US pianist Chick Corea, he’s not afraid to break loose and play ‘outside’ or funky, either. Ably supported by Berklee trained, nimble fingered local electric bass hero Tiago Coimbra and top drummer Steve Hynes there will be a lots of virtuosity on display, backed up by some excellent content.

Fleur began singing at small clubs and bars only to find she adored the sense of freedom that jazz singing can bring and quickly gained an impressive local following. Fleur is privileged to be a student of The First Lady of British Jazz, Claire Martin, and the collaboration has produced a very fine performer with musical intellect and skill as an improviser. Her influences spanning jazz, soul and blues genres, include Carman McRae, Shirley Horn, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Duo of Guy Tortora and Ben Tyzack on Tuesday 31st March.   We have two icons of the blues scene joined together in a duo to give you an evening of assured top quality - their combined experience probably supersedes the average 6 piece, although they are still sounding and looking as fresh as the day they embarked upon their respective journeys into the world of music. Two creative and consummate musicians, they are Ben Tyzack and Guy Tortora.  The full band will be appearing in November and Guy's band in October, so this will be a very interesting foretaste of things to come later in the year.

Tickets £10, bookings to email address. Doors 7.30pm, artists on stage 8.45pm. Good food, reasonably priced, available to eat at you table if required.  I will mention, that in April we have Giles Hedley and the Aviators and in May, Doug Macleod (USA), which is on the Wednesday and not the traditional Tuesday.

May show is on Wednesday 27th May and not the traditional Tuesday with renowned American artist, Doug Macleod, who is on tour in the UK. Tickets will be £12 for this one and that price held thereafter being that we have not increased the entry price for 10 years or more.  This still represents ultimate value for money for a good evening's entertainment in a very nice setting.

*** MUSIC COURSES ***

New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy – The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all ‘tools of the trade’.

Where: Ealing W5, West London

When: Course A – Fortnightly on Sundays plus performance dates and masterclasses
Course B – Fortnightly on Saturdays and as above
Course C – Monday evenings
Who for: Individuals who are serious about developing their knowledge and skills with a view to creating successful jazz performance – all styles, all ages, singers and instrumentalists.
Why: BIVJA is keen to encourage mature students as well as young people at the start of their careers.
There are very few bespoke courses for those who wish to empower themselves with a greater understanding of the rhythm section, band leading and performance confidence. Is it for me? Call for an informal chat on 020 8992 1571 (leave message and we’ll call you back).

UNIQUE – BIVJA promotes a warm but challenging environment and it’s different because of its very ‘hands on’ approach. As the course develops ALL students will have acquired some practical knowledge of piano, bass, kit and percussion playing and band leading skills in addition to vocal and technical skills. Sessions will be followed by a de-brief, student feedback, career support and Q+A – again a unique opportunity

Specialist workshops – Participants will have access to workshops on specific skills such as recording, PA set up and mixing and workshops with visiting professional singers, instrumentalists and mentors. Tutors will vary including Gareth Williams – piano; Peter Ind – bass; Les Cirkel – drums. The support group created by this enterprise will assist students in self-promotion and performance opportunities.

BIVJA Director – Verona Chard – 020 8992 1571 – leave message, and contact details. 07985 440902 www.veronachard.com/bivja v...@veronachard.com

Saxophone Workshop  www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk

The saxophone workshop is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price.
Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone.
This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion.
The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

12th, 26th March,
9th, 23rd April,

Jazz Workshop    www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.  The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.

The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.
