17th March - Giles Hedley and the Aviators: http://www.gileshedley.com
Giles
has been singing and playing blues across UK and Europe since the 60s,
on bottleneck and lap steel guitars, acoustic and electric, and his
trademark simultaneous nose-and-mouth harmonica playing. Critics and
audiences alike are drawn into the blues the band displays whether
joyous, ribald or sad. Their stunning musicianship conveys the emotion
of the blues whilst avoiding technique for its own sake!
Giles
is a regular on UK and Europe’s blues festival and club circuits, both
solo and with the band featuring repeatedly on national radio in England
and France. Blues in Britain has said he is, "a mainstay of British blues" or as Blues Matters puts it, "one of UK’s foremost roots and country blues performers". The
Aviators is a funky roots-blues outfit steeped in early Chicago blues.
Earthy slide and steel guitars, blistering lead guitar, a passionate,
Howlin' Wolf-style voice, adventurous bass and drums right up in the mix
giving that unmistakeable Aviators sound, quite unlike other British
blues bands.

WEDS 22nd March – HARALD LASSEN NEW QUARTET – ‘Top Norwegian saxophonist’ - After building up strong and young band concepts such as the indie jazz quartet Pixel, avant-hiphop sextet Mopti & Bendik Baksaas and the innovative duo DUPLEX,
saxophone player Harald Lassen decided to track his jazz roots and
write music for a really conventional jazz line up; the piano quartet.
Earlier this year Lassen invited the renowned Belgian band LABtrio for
a one-time Norway tour after discovering them in Norrlandsoperan in
Umeå (Sweden). To continue the development of this music he has put
together a group of musicians ideally suited for this music – a mixture
of the past with rising European star BRAM DE LOOZE piano and a new explosive Norwegian rhythm section consisting of STIAN ANDERSEN bass & TORE FLATJORD drums. The quartet plays Lassen original music inspired by impressionism, the 70s and life so far. https://www.facebook.com/harald.lassen Doors: 6pm, Music: 8-11pm - £10/£8
WEDS 19th April – PIXEL – Leading Norwegian powerhouse indie-jazz ensemble featuring ELLEN ANDREA WANG double bass/vocals, JONAS KILMORK VEMØY trumpet, HARALD LASSEN tenor sax/vocals & JON AUDUN BAAR drums “It's
rare for a group so young to emerge with such a fully formed and
distinctive concept, but Pixel seems to have accomplished just that” of the overwhelming review John Kelman from All About Jazz
Combining
indie-rock energy with the improvisational flexibility of jazz, Pixel
is earthy and ethereal, wistful and aggressive, sensuous and pummelling.
The group stands at the forefront of a rising generation of jazz
players who are remaking jazz in their own image, and doing so for an
audience that is hungry for something new and reflects modern day sounds
in creative music. Regarded widely as one of the most exciting jazz
bands of our time, their second album ‘WE ARE ALL SMALL PIXELS’ received
4 stars in DownBeat Jazz Magazine. The track ‘CALL ME’ has received
extensive radio airplay. The band will be performing music from their
third recently released critically acclaimed album ‘GOLDEN YEARS’. http://www.pixelband.no/ https://www.facebook.com/pixelnorway/ Doors: 6pm, Music: 8-11pm - £12/£10

Headline acts announced for Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival’s tenth anniversary.
The Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival are delighted to announce headlining performances with swinging jazz from Claire Martin OBE and Ray Gelato, and powerful blues from Northern Ireland’s star, Kaz Hawkins. To be held at Burton Agnes Hall, Driffield, YO25 4NB from 30th June – July 2nd 2017 www.burtonagnes.com
‘They
say that good things come in small packages. This may be one of the
summer's smallest gatherings, but it's also one of the most
sophisticated...' Daily Mail
The
festival is uniquely set in one of the UK’s finest Elizabethan stately
piles, Burton Agnes Hall, home to the saxophone playing organiser, Simon
Cunliffe-Lister. Over twenty five bands provide a weekend of jazz and
blues on manicured lawns, and in the ornately carved Great Hall.
Civilised camping with hot showers in the adjacent park field,
children’s entertainers, and local ale and food inspired The Independent to describe the Festival as ‘Possibly the most enjoyable jazz concert I've ever attended’.
‘Now this is a proper music festival’ The Times
One of The Daily Telegraph's best fifteen festivals for the over 50s.
“This
is a very English festival, with a wonderful laid-back
atmosphere…superbly organised and efficiently run, which brought
together such a wide range of musical styles across a successful
weekend…Yes, this is a wonderful English festival.” Fatea Magazine
“Who
could have imagined such an idyllic and sublime location for a Jazz and
Blues Festival.. .thankfully somebody did…This unique venue and event
is a must attend festival….make sure you get your tickets...I guarantee
you won’t be disappointed.” Yorkshire Gig Guide
More artists will be announced over the coming weeks and months -please visit http://www.burtonagnes.com/Jazz_Festival/Line_Up.html to be kept up to date.
Fifteen
generations have filled the Hall with treasures, from magnificent
carvings commissioned when the Hall was built in 1598 by Sir Henry
Griffith, to French Impressionist paintings, contemporary furniture,
tapestries and other modern artwork in recent years. Simon Jenkins,
author of ‘England’s Thousand Best Houses’, described Burton Agnes Hall
as ‘the perfect English house’ and as one of England’s twenty finest
houses alongside Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and Chatsworth House.

And finally … NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website. We will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from.
Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the
body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would
normally be happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. Please send all items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk
3.
We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with
the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night
have changed or that it has ceased. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc.
(you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly
newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy
please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them.
5.
We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the
newsletter on Friday morning. Can you get your information to us by 4pm
Thursday evening at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
Many thanks!
