Tuesday, 30th October TWO JEWELS OF JAZZ featuring DOMINIC ASHWORTH, guitar, and JULIAN MARC STRINGLE, clarinet, with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.
Dominic Ashworth, an
exceptionally talented Canadian guitarist, a regular visitor to the
Club, for which we are extremely lucky to have as our guest. His
services are in great demand country wide touring with groups such as,
Picante Latin Band, The Dream Band and also guesting with many other
star musicians such as Craig Milverton, Derek Nash and the Rag &
Bone Club, around the country. No matter the tempo, genre, style,
Dominic ticks all the boxes ensuring his audience are always wanting
more from this amazing musician.
Julian Marc Stringle, a child clarinet prodigy with a flamboyant air, and that’s no pun,
is the other part of this wondrous duo who seamlessly play as if one,
such is their understanding of each other’s flawless musical ability,
Julian has many mantels in the world of music in all the genres, as well
as his composing, arranging, writing, teaching and his continuous
touring around the world with his Dream Band and many other groups. Is
it little wonder that the late Johnny Dankworth quoted ‘Julian is an immense talent, probably the best clarinetist to emerge in British jazz for several decades’
Tuesday, 27th November, 2018 completes our programme of gigs for 2018
PRE CHRISTMAS JAZZ / BUFFET, for just £15 per head by ticket only, so early bookings essential to avoid disappointment, featuring CARLTON JAZZ, by PAUL HIGGS, trumpet, DEREK CLENSHAW, trombone, MARTIN NICKLESS, clarinet, TIM HUSKISSON, keyboard and TED SIMKINS, bass, with leader DAVE GRANT, drums, playing a complete potpourri of music gems to bring in Christmas.
Paul Higgs,
trumpet, needs no introduction being a regular visitor to the Club in a
variety of guises that this multi-instrumentalist performs across the
country. He currently is touring with the fantastic Chris Ingham Quartet
with the brilliant musical biographies of, ‘Hoagy’ and ‘Dudley’
portraying the lives and music of the legends Carmichael and Moore both
of which are receiving critical acclaim wherever they appear. Tonight he
will be enlightening you to his excellent trumpet skills of a master
musician.
Derek Clenshaw trombone, the choice of
top bandleaders, when in need of a freelance jazz musician. Performs
with all UK jazz stars, preferring music of mainstream and jazz
standards, having a sweet touch and a warm rounded sound of the
trombone. Derek has been seen in many bands, playing with such
well-known names as Humphrey Lyttleton, Freddie Randall, Mike Cotton,
John Crocker, Julian Marc Stringle, and Bruce Adams.
Martin Nickless, clarinet,
makes clear his first love in music is for the big band and his career
includes various genres of music from classical to pop and has played
for many West End shows, with sessions for composer Stanley Myers as
well as touring with Jack Jones, Frankie Vaughan & Norman Wisdom.
Martin is also known for his writing and arranging and is clearly an
outstanding exponent of the clarinet and called upon for many other
gigs.
Tim Huskisson, keyboard, was self taught at a
very early age and became inspired by the 78rpm records he acquired, a
hobby of his to this day. Taking clarinet lessons in his teens he began
playing with local jazz bands before receiving further encouragement
from Digby Fairweather and taken on a jazz cruise to Sweden with his
‘All Stars’ in 1981. By a chance meeting with Brian Conley he played in
summer shows and became his MD in the 90’s. Latterly he has dedicated
himself to the music that first inspired him and has established himself
as one of the busiest and finest musicians on the jazz circuit.
Ted 'the hat' Simkins,
skeletal bass, and a member of the resident trio, is one of the elder
statesmen of bass players around, but all musicians still wish for the
same energy and prowess that he puts into every gig. No matter the style
or genre Ted fits into the groove automatically such is the experience
of this much admired musician whose main interest at one time was
photography. Whatever it is that keeps him going, and if he could only
bottle it, would make him a fortune.
Dave Grant,
drums, leads the resident trio at Jazz at O B’s, primarily in the
interest of keeping Jazz live in Brentwood which he has done so for over
thirty years. Originally from The Old House in Brentwood Dave enjoys
the ‘Dixieland’ style of jazz having played with many musicians of that
genre and many others who have guested at the Club. He has his own DG
Quartet playing local gigs and also runs Carlton Jazz.

12th October - Sister Suzie: http://www.sistersuzie.co.uk
Vocals Suzie, Guitar Matt Jackson, Double bass Darren Eddie Edwards, Sax/harp Mick, Drums Brian Nevill.
Suzie
hails from Northumberland’srural northern border and has been bringing
her natural downhome charms to southern climes for the last few years.
Her aunty Freda turned her on to Elvis. This triggered a love of classic
rhythm & blues which led to the sounds of Memphis Minnie, Big Mama
Thornton, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Robert Johnson, Rufus Thomas,
Leadbelly, Elmore James before ultimately her biggest idol became New
Orleans Soul Queen, Irma Thomas. This led Suzie to decide that singing
and entertaining in public was going to be her life’s ambition and her
travelling to New Orleans was a natural progression to further those
goals.
The itinerant life, working to pay for her music habit, led
to Suzie traveling around the UK for a while, until settling in the
south where she finally cut her first record in July 2016. This was
followed by her second a year later and recently a third. Further tours
in the UK plus some European festivals and weekenders have seen Suzie
and the band firmly establish themselves on the UK blues scene.
26th October - James Scannell Quartet
http://jamespscannell.com/about.html http://www.woolfnotes.co.uk https://www.gabriellatchin.com/home http://www.mattfishwick.net/html
James Scannel sax, clarinet, Gabiel Latchin keyboards, Simon Woolf bass and Matt Fishwick drums.
Born in London 1974 but now living in Berlin, James Scannell works as
freelancer playing a range of woodwind instruments performing jazz, pop
and classical music.
He has recorded for film, TV Shows and
commercials, has worked with classical orchestras (City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Session Orchestra, Deutsches Film Orchestra
Barbelsberg) played jazz festivals in France, Spain, Germany, England,
USA, Finland, Denmark and Sweden and concert performances in Singapure,
Switzerland, China and UEA. He has performed with big bands (Echoes of
Ellington, Rias, Till Brönner) played on pop albums (one becoming
platinum), as well as co-leading his own jazz band Linejam wíth singer
Aline Staskowiak.
The rest of the band have all had long and varied
careers and there is far too little space to even start to document
here. However, they can all be found on the web at the addresses given
above.
16th November - Cadillac Kings: www.cadillackings.co.uk
Mike Thomas: vocals, harmonica, slide guitar, Mal Barclay: lead guitar, vocals, Tim Penn: piano, accordion, vocals, Roy Webber: drums, vocals, and Paul Cuff: double bass, Fender bass.
The
Cadillac Kings are firm favourites on the blues, r&b, rock &
roll & swing dance scenes and feature five of the UK's top roots
musicians. Inspired by early rhythm & blues styles with a distinctly
modern take lyric-wise, they have earned a reputation for wowing
audiences from night clubs to festivals, from theatres to dance halls,
the length & breadth of the UK & Europe, from the Canary Islands
to the Arctic circle. Since their formation in 2000 the band has
opened shows for & shared stages with countless famous blues, rock
& roots acts and have picked up numerous awards on the way.
Their fifth & latest album, “The Secret of my Success” released in
October 2016 to unanimous praise in the UK, USA & Europe was chosen
by the UK’s Independent Blues Broadcasters Association as one of the
best 3 releases of 2016 alongside Kaz Hawkins & Joe Bonamassa in the
top 40 blues cds of the year. They're a band at the top of their game
with a well-earned reputation for their unfailing ability to put on a
great performance, playing the very best good time blues with warmth
& humour exuding from every pore.
30th November - Marigolds Jazz All Stars featuring Enrico Tomasso: https://www.deezer.com/en/artist/4467726?autoplay=true & https://www.fandalism.com/martinguy
http://www.jazzcds.co.uk/artist_id_565/biography_id_565 & http://www.timhuskisson.com/index.html & https://www.josecanha.com/
Enrico Tomasso trumpet/vocals, Martin Guy drums, Mark Crooks sax, clarinet, Tim Huskisson keyboards, and Jose Canha bass
Enrico
was born into a musical family and was brought up on the earlier
styles, Swing and Dixieland, by his dad before he discovered Miles
Davis, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and the ‘fusion stuff’, which
opened his mind to anything.
When Louis Armstrong came to London in
1976 Enricos dad introduced him, age 9, to Louis at London Airport. As
Enrico had taken his trumpet with him, which he had been playing for 3
years, he serenaded Louis in the airport with ‘Sleepy Time Down South’
as alluded to in our posters. Enrico has gone on to become a very top
trumpeter in the jazz world winning numerous awards and playing with
many famous musicians in many prestigious bands as well as leading his
own ensembles.
There is too little space here to do justice to
Enrico’s illustrious career or to even scratch the surface of the
careers of the other musicians in the band other than to say in Greg’s
own words that, ‘they are all top blokes’.

Kim Fair just added a petition "SAVE THE VAL".
It would mean a lot to me if you took a moment to add your name because: Over the past 80 years, the Valentine Pub in Perth Road Gants Hill
has been a significant venue within the area and has been a place where
many community members have socialised, built lasting friendships and
relationships. It has been a place where live music chimed the ears of
local people too. https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-val
Real change happens when everyday people like you and I come together
and stand up for what we believe in. Together we can reach heaps of
people and help create change around this important issue.
After
you've signed the petition please also take a moment to share it with
others. It's super easy – all you need to do is forward this email or
share this link on Facebook or Twitter: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-val

The unique & exciting rhythm ‘n’ blues flavours that emerged from New Orleans in the late 1940s and early 1950s. 12th October - Sister Suzie: http://www.sistersuzie.co.uk
Vocals Suzie, Guitar Matt Jackson, Double bass Darren Eddie Edwards, Sax/harp Mick, Drums Brian Nevill.
Suzie hails from Northumberland’s rural northern border and has been bringing her natural downhome charms to southern climes for the last few years. Her aunty Freda turned her on to Elvis. This triggered a love of classic rhythm & blues which led to the sounds of Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Robert Johnson, Rufus Thomas, Leadbelly, Elmore James before ultimately her biggest idol became New Orleans Soul Queen, Irma Thomas. This led Suzie to decide that singing and entertaining in public was going to be her life’s ambition and her travelling to New Orleans was a natural progression to further those goals.
The itinerant life, working to pay for her
music habit, led to Suzie traveling around the UK for a while, until
settling in the south where she finally cut her first record in July
2016. This was followed by her second a year later and recently a third.
Further tours in the UK plus some European festivals and weekenders
have seen Suzie and the band firmly establish themselves on the UK blues
scene.

JAY PHELPS - Free As The Birds - Trumpeter and Artist,
Jay Phelps is a Vancouver-born Canadian with an instantly recognisable warm and projecting tone. He was tutored by the city’s top Jazz and Classical trumpeters and distinguished himself early on as the youngest band-leader in the Vancouver International Jazz Festival’s history.
In
1999 aged 17, Jay moved to London to immerse himself in the jazz scene
and attracted the notice of Gary Crosby (Dune records), who offered him
work with Jazz Jamaica in 2002 and the opportunity to be a 'Tomorrow’s
Warrior'. Citing Louis Armstrong, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown and Miles
Davis as his early influences, Jay went on to create and co-lead the UK
Jazz sensation Empirical. They spent two years touring major festivals
and events with their debut album, while garnering worldwide media
attention.
Jay has performed and recorded with a veritable who’s who
of international Jazz artists; Courtney Pine, Andrew Hill, Wynton
Marsalis, Ray Brown, John Hendricks, Nasheet Waits, George Benson, Jamie
Cullum, Sir John Dankworth, Jean Toussaint, Dennis Rollins, Guy Barker,
Amy Winehouse, Charlotte Church, Hugh Masakela, Jazz Jamaica, Soweto
Kinch, Skatroniks, Ska Cubano, Chineke Orchestra.
In 2012, Jay
guested with Wynton Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra for
Marsalis’ epic, 'Congo Square'. Taking the chair of the master he
conducted the band. Later that summer he proceeded to have two sell out
nights featuring the Jay Phelps Big Band at Ronnie Scott’s. Jay
expanded Into TV where he featured in the band on BBC’s Dancing on The
Edge, written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff.
After a successful
year of hosting the Late Show at Ronnie Scott's with various bands, Jay
moved his night to the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square, where he
continued with his signature style. As well as being a late night host
and performer of London's top music venues, Phelps regularly tours
nationally and internationally with his own bands (JPQ, Projections:Of
Miles, Jay's Jitter Jive). When not on the road with his own groups, Jay
has been touring with two of Brazil's great musical exports, Ed Motta
and Banda Black Rio and Afrobeat Master Orlando Julius, American Soul
singer Liv Warfield. Jay recorded his second solo album ‘Free as the
Birds’, a departure from the more traditional approach of his first,
released on Ropeadope Records March 23, 2018. London is currently home
for Jay and he is the musical director of one of London's top new clubs
Jack Solomons.

Terry Steel’s Astor Big Band and singers, together with guest Sadie Nine from BBC Essex, present The Glenn Miller Story at the Palace Theatre, Southend on 28 Oct 2018 at 3pm. The show explores Glenn’s life story and career from his earliest days in big bands working with artists such as Ben Pollack and the evolution of his distinct sound with Ray Noble, right up to the fateful flight in December 1944 from which he never returned. The performance includes numerous unforgettable No 1 hits, including Moonlight Serenade, American Patrol, Serenade in Blue, Chattanooga Choo Choo and String of Pearls.
All profits, and a collection at the performance, go to the Royal British Legion to support their work with PTSD sufferers. 2018 is a key year for the RBL, as it marks the centenary of World War 1 Armistice on 11/11/1918. We will, therefore, be presenting in our show a special WW1 tribute including the songs used to recruit the troops and march them to war in 1914, with an introduction from a person of national significance in 1940. Also reflected will be the work done by the RBL with veterans from all conflicts.
For more information and tickets, please contact the theatre (430 London Road, Southend on Sea, Essex SS0 9LA ) Box Office 01702 351135, or from the ‘What’s On’ pages on their website https://southendtheatres.org.uk.

Mike Thomas: vocals, harmonica, slide guitar, Mal Barclay: lead guitar, vocals, Tim Penn: piano, accordion, vocals, Roy Webber: drums, vocals, and Paul Cuff: double bass, Fender bass.
The
Cadillac Kings are firm favourites on the blues, r&b, rock &

musicians. Inspired by early rhythm & blues styles with a distinctly
modern take lyric-wise, they have earned a reputation for wowing

& roots acts and have picked up numerous awards on the way.
Their fifth & latest album, “The Secret of my Success” released in Oct 2016 to unanimous praise in the UK, USA & Europe was chosen by the UK’s Independent Blues Broadcasters Association as one of the best 3 releases of 2016 alongside Kaz Hawkins & Joe Bonamassa in the top 40 blues cds of the year.
14th December - The Eric Ranzoni Trio: http://www.ericranzoni.co.uk
From
North London much-acclaimed Eric Ranzoni returns after previous
knockout gigs. Renowned on the London Blues scene, including a residency
at Boisdales in Belgravia, for his tremendous piano playing Eric’s
musical talents are second to none.
Since returning to London in
2003, Eric has become known as an exceptional and versatile pianist,
with a warm singing voice and a knack to entertain. Solo or accompanied
by excellent musicians, he’s played the Blues (and Roots music in
general) in many top venues in London and about, with frequent stints
abroad. In great demand as Blues pianist with London-based bands, he
played piano on Mud Morganfield’s, Muddy Waters eldest son, UK/European
tour, along with Big Joe Louis and Wes Weston.
In Mud's band he's
appeared on 'Later with Jools Holland' on BBC TV and played major Blues
Festivals alongside artists like Sting, John Mayall, Herbie Hancock,
Santana, Jack Bruce, Van Morrison...
Eric's has played with Ray
Cooper (Elton John and Eric Clapton percussionist), Jools Holland, Otis
Grand, Buddy Whittington, Charlie Musselwhite, Big Joe Louis, Bill
Hurley (The Inmates), UK top band Cadillac Kings, Chas Hodges (Chas
& Dave), boogie woogie stars Ben Waters & Axel Zwingenberger etc
28th December - The Alan Barnes Quartet: www.alanbarnesjazz.com
Alan Barnes Sax, Ted Beament keyboards, Simon Thorpe bass and Clark Tracey drums
Alan
is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader
and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and
baritone sax that has few peers. His range and brilliance have made him
“first call” for studio and live work and his recorded catalogue is
immense whether as leader/co-leader, alone or supporting other artists.
The recipient of numerous British Jazz Awards, Alan has played
residencies and toured tirelessly, building a warm rapport, making him
uniquely popular in British jazz.
Local lad Ted Beament needs no introduction to regular patrons and as space is short……
Simon Thorpe plays in bands across the jazz spectrum as well as leading
his own bands with a double bass style that is strong and melodic - one
of the UK's most popular players.
Son of Stan Tracey CBE, Clark has
forged his own varied jazz career. After playing in his father's
various ensembles Clark has gone on to tour worldwide and record
extensively. He has formed many bands with many famous musicians and has
freelanced with some of the most important jazz artists home and
abroad. Gifted composer and teacher Clark formed his own record
companies, Tentoten Records & Resteamed Records which is devoted to
his father’s works. He is one of the sharpest jazz drummers in the
country, playing with a keen-eared awareness making him one of the most
entertaining drummers in the country.

Morrissey Mullen, formed by saxophonist Dick Morrissey and guitarist Jim Mullen, was one of the first and certainly the finest Jazz-Funk Fusion bands ever to work in the UK. The band existed as a full-time working entity for over 12 years before disbanding in 1988. Sadly, Dick Morrissey died in 2000 and remains much missed to this day. The Morrissey Mullen Legacy Band features Jim Mullen on guitar, Dave Lewis on tenor saxophone and Noel McCalla on vocals together. Tickets £17

After a successful year of hosting the Late Show at Ronnie Scott's, Jay moved his night to the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square. As well as being a late night host and performer of London's top music venues, Phelps regularly tours nationally and internationally with his own bands (JPQ, Projections:Of Miles, Jay's Jitter Jive). When not with his own groups, Jay has been touring with two of Brazil's great musical exports, Ed Motta and Banda Black Rio and Afrobeat Master Orlando Julius, American Soul singer Liv Warfield. Jay recorded his second solo album ‘Free as the Birds’, a departure from the more traditional approach of his first, released on Ropeadope Records March 23, 2018. London is currently home and he is the M D of one of London's top new clubs Jack Solomons.

Freddie Freeloader’s second Jazz Jam will take place at a different venue, the Black Bull pub in Chelmsford CM12PN from 4-7 on Sunday November 18th. Members of DWJQ will be the house band, they will have music with them for a score of jazz standards, just bring your instruments or sticks and you can sign up to sing or play on any of those. If you want to play something else or in a different key, please bring music (including parts for concert, Bb and Eb instruments) and we will give it a go. Just turn up to sing play or listen, or you can pre book a slot to lead up to 3 numbers by contacting mickf...@btconnect.com. This approach worked really well at the first one last month, this one should be even better.
