Thursday 29th MayShakatak. www.shakatak.com.  Tickets now on sale at the Cliffs Pavilion Box Office – £20
It’s really fantastic to welcome to the club legendary jazz/funk outfit Shakatak to close off the season in real style! Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an “underground” element. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high “cult” status and instant recognition as a household name.

After Shakatak we’ll be taking our usual summer break but we will be back on Thursday 2nd September 2014 – artist TBC. We have a couple of acts already lined up for next season, on Wednesday 1st October 2014 we have fantastic local vocalist Kevin Fitzsimmons’ Jazzwurx www.jazzwurx.co.uk with a stellar line up featuring Derek Nash on saxes and Leon Greening on keyboards. Kevin is getting great reviews for his new cd “Show Me The Way”

Thursday 30th October 2014 – artist TBC

30th May – The Kate Williams Quartet: http://www.kate-williams-quartet.com/index.html

Jazz pianist/composer Kate Williams was born in London into a musical family (her father is the guitarist John Williams, her mother a classical pianist). A recipient of the John Dankworth Award For Talent Deserving Wider Recognition, she has gained a distinctive reputation as both a writer and performer.
She has released several CDs, each one to critical acclaim. Her most recent one being ‘Smoke And Mirrors’, a live duo recording with award-winning Scottish tenorist Bobby Wellins. “The opening bars of “Smoke And Mirrors,” one of three jointly composed tunes on the album, set the standard: languid, relaxed interplay between tenor saxophone and piano that has the effortless ease that can only come from players in total command of their craft.” (Bruce Lindsay, All About Jazz)
In 2011, she recorded with her new septet featuring Gareth Lockrane, Steve Fishwick, Ben Somers, Julian Siegel, Jeremy Brown, Oli Hayhurst, and Tristan Mailliot. ‘Made Up’ was released in October 2011, and ranked 7th in Mojo’s top jazz albums of 2011. The septet was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award in March 2012.  She has also performed with many of the UK’s leading musicians, including Stan Sulzmann, Nikki Iles, John Etheridge, Anita Wardell, Georgia Mancio, Dave Cliff, Tony Woods, Tim Whitehead, Julian Siegel, Karen Sharpe, Allison Neale, and is a member of Chris Biscoe’s Mingus Moves. Kate currently teaches on the jazz degree course at Middlesex University.

13th June  -  Doc K’s Blues Band   Original member Mick Haase on harp and vocals (Biffo), long standing member Dave Barnes on slide guitar and vocals ( Blues Movie, Mad Dog), lead guitarist Malcolm Hine ( S.A.L.T, Brett Marvin, Southside, Blues Twins et al) Mick Parker on drums and Simon Powe on bass.  Dr K’s Bluesband play authentic exciting Blues and rocking R&B and have toured widely in Britain and Europe over many years.
Founded by Fairport’s Ashley Hutchings in 1967, Dr K’s have been stalwarts of the British Blues and R&B scene ever since. Dr K’s extensive Family Tree includes Geoff Bradford ( Blues By 6, Cyril Davis All Stars) Geoff Krivitt ( John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers) Eric Peachey ( East of Eden, Mick Taylor Band), with historical links to many other prominent bands and players.  This is truly an outstanding band. It has been said that they play, ‘quite simply North London’s best Chicago Blues.’ Don’t miss them

27th June  -  Nick Newell Quartet.  Nick Newell sax, Ted Beament keyboards, Murray Salmon bass and Les Cirkell drums.

Nick Newell’s biography and credits are far too long to properly include here. It has to be sufficient to say that he has appeared with Zoot Money, John Mayall, Mike Cotton, Keef Hartley, The Kinks, Roger Daltrey and so many more.  The other band members are no strangers to Marigolds having entertained our aficionados royally on a number of occasions in the past.

Ted is a local lad, living as he does on the outskirts of Harlow. He is one of the finest pianists that Britain has to offer and has played alongside many fine soloists and is a mainstay of the Humphrey Lyttelton Band.
Murray Salmon taught himself double bass and went on to back some of the top acts of the seventies (Matt Monroe, Tom Jones, Buddy Greco et al.) as well as playing on the SS Canberra and performing all over the world.
Cliff Richard, Des O’Connor, Dana, Cilla Black, The Drifters and Princess Anne are just a few of the people talented Les Cirkel on drums has entertained or played with over the years as well as passing on his expertise and knowledge as a teacher for aspiring drummers.

He has also been a composer for his own groups for many years for his quartet and big band.  Don epitomises a special generation of UK jazz soloists; inspired as are many by the great tenor players from Coleman Hawkins to Coltrane, with Dexter Gordon and the indefatigable Sonny Rollins all being major influences.  Don Weller – Tenor, Dave Newton – Piano, Andrew Cleyndert – Bass, Dave Barry – Drums

FLEUR STEVENSON FORTHCOMING GIGS  www.fleurstevensonjazz.co.uk http://fleurstevensonjazz.co.uk   www.facebook.com/FleurStevensonJazz

Fleur is one of the new breed of jazz singers who, having initially trained classically in voice and trumpet, later found her true passion for jazz. Fleur began singing at small clubs and bars only to find she adored the sense of freedom that jazz singing can bring and quickly gained an impressive local following. Fleur is privileged to be a student of The First Lady of British Jazz, Claire Martin, and the collaboration has produced a very fine performer with musical intellect and skill as an improviser. Janet Seidel is planning to be resident in UK for periods in 2014 and looking to secure further bookings for Festivals, Clubs and concerts. She has toured in the UK several times before over the last 10 years – gigs have included Glasgow Recital hall, The Kings Place, Ronnie Scott’s, Salisbury Arts Festival, Nottingham Music in Quiet Places, just to name a few.
The Janet Seidel Trio has a new CD, Far Away Places, just released in Australia and Japan in October 2013. It reached No 1 on jazz vocal charts Amazon Japan, just ahead of Stacey Kent.
At home in Australia, Janet regularly plays major concert halls, theatres plus jazz venues and Festivals, usually in Trio format but occasionally percussionist, featured pianist or horn players are added for more jazz oriented work. For future UK performances, Janet also welcomes any possibility to include one or two British guest artists by special arrangement for Festival shows and such.
Trio colleagues, Chuck Morgan and David Seidel are also very experienced players aside from their work with Janet, having performed, toured and recorded with a very wide selection of top Australian and international artists. They are capable and happy to perform in other combinations, jams sessions and the like at Music festivals where appropriate. Janet is also open to do guest spots with compatible groups as well.
The Trio have also had success running vocal workshops and ukulele workshops.
Further contact is invited from interested parties ranging from jazz venues to Festivals and concert halls.
‘Janet is No 1 on our list of artists to be requested at our Club – an enthralling night for our members and guests – certainly one of the highlights of the year!’  Phil & Carole Church, Belvedere Jazz & Music Club, Essex, England

“…this singer is as good as it gets – this is what world-class means.” William Wilson, MBE, Proprietor, Lyth Arts, Scotland
“In Janet Seidel the current world of music is blessed with a 21st century vocal and jazz star. Scintillating”. Brian Dempster: Ulster Jazz Events Ireland

Dakotair RAF Transport Command Memorial & Weald Aviation present D-Day Dance with John Petters Swing Band, Hangar 6, North Weald Airfield, Epping, Essex, CM16 6HR

David Petters is the driving force behind Dakotair. They have recently acquired a vintage Dakota and transported it to North Weald. The aircraft needs rebuilding and it is hoped that it will be airworthy before too long.  This hangar dance as a memorial to those who fought during D-Day offers a unique opportunity to experience the driving sounds of swing alongside the Dakota and other vintage aircraft.
We have assembled a really impressive band, having poached several key musicians from the Chris Barber band, in the persons of trombonist/arranger, Bob Hunt, and the superb reed players, Amy Roberts and Richard Exall. Allen Beechey will be on cornet along with the exceptional rhythm section comprising Tim Huskisson, piano, Jim Douglas guitar and Keith Donald, bass.
Jiveswing.com will be providing dancers and dance class.
Tickets £18 in advance or £20 on the night, call 01992 525176 or 0771 811470 or online at ticketsource.co.uk/emasevents.

All Party Parliamentary Jazz Awards voting forms are now available. The link to the voting form for the nine categories for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2014 is http://www.jazzservices.org.uk/index.php/parliamentary-jazz-awards/-2014-entry-form

Two years ago you helped Paul Barnes and Mike Pointon win on two categories. It is important that people who represent the traditional / swing end of the jazz spectrum are recognised.
(Paul’s latest show is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx). We have some fine talented musicians who get very little recognition from the media. Here is a chance to help put that right.
I’m going to ask you to vote for me, if you think I do a good job flying the flag for traditional jazz in the UK.
For the Jazz Venue of the Year (including jazz clubs, venues, festivals and promoters), you may consider one of our festivals at Mundesley, Bracklesham or Stratford as venue of the year or festival of the year. Perhaps, maybe it is St John’s Arts Centre at Old Harlow.
As you know, I’ve put my money where my mouth is (I have more mouth than money) for jazz for over 30 years. You may consider a vote for me for the Services to Jazz Award. Traditional jazz needs extra clout these days and the publicity would give me the opportunity to raise the profile of our music.
The Jazz Media Section really needs to be Paul Barnes at BBC Norfolk. His show is always there at the whim of BBC bosses and is a particular oasis in a sea of sludge that plagues most of the BBC. Cases could also be made for Walter Love’s Jazz Club at BBC Ulster or Alyn Shipton’s Jazz Record Requests. All three presenters are experts in their field.

*** MUSIC COURSES ***

New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy – The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all ‘tools of the trade’.

Where: Ealing W5, West London
When: Course A – Fortnightly on Sundays plus performance dates and masterclasses
Course B – Fortnightly on Saturdays and as above
Course C – Monday evenings
Who for: Individuals who are serious about developing their knowledge and skills with a view to creating successful jazz performance – all styles, all ages, singers and instrumentalists.
Why: BIVJA is keen to encourage mature students as well as young people at the start of their careers.
There are very few bespoke courses for those who wish to empower themselves with a greater understanding of the rhythm section, band leading and performance confidence.  Is it for me? Call for an informal chat on 020 8992 1571 (leave message and we’ll call you back).
UNIQUE – BIVJA promotes a warm but challenging environment and it’s different because of its very ‘hands on’ approach. As the course develops ALL students will have acquired some practical knowledge of piano, bass, kit and percussion playing and band leading skills in addition to vocal and technical skills. Sessions will be followed by a de-brief, student feedback, career support and Q+A – again a unique opportunity
Specialist workshops – Participants will have access to workshops on specific skills such as recording, PA set up and mixing and workshops with visiting professional singers, instrumentalists and mentors. Tutors will vary including Gareth Williams – piano; Peter Ind – bass; Les Cirkel – drums. The support group created by this enterprise will assist students in self-promotion and performance opportunities.

Thursday Night Saxophone Workshop www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk

The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.
Saxophone Workshop Details – Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm – 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels Welcome at St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

Thursday Night Jazz Workshop www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P’s Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.
Jazz Workshop Details – Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm – 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels/Instruments Welcome. St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year’s Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP’s arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger’s review is likely to be used.

Grapevine magazine, the most comprehensive (and free!) events guide in East Anglia, is devoting a monthly double page spread trying to promote jazz to a wider and younger audience. The columnist is well-known jazz journalist, Roger Haywood whose arts reviews for the Eastern Daily Press cover jazz and have brought that specialist music genre into the pages of the paper, probably for the first time on a regular basis. Also, he is now writing the jazz pages for Grapevine events magazine, especially focusing on news and performances across the Eastern Counties. Send any news, opinions or issues that you feel merit a discussion to ro...@rogerhaywood.com. His column is separate to the gig guide where copy can be submitted directly to the journal or even inserted online by the promoter directly into their diary at www.grapevinelive.co.uk/Events. These jazz pages look at issues and trends in jazz: topics that he hopes to cover in the coming issues including jazz education, training and teaching (including private jazz tutors), performance opportunities for amateurs including the many jams in the region, music shops, especially those that cover instruments and repairs, plus a feature he wants to do on local big bands, not just who they are but how they work, what they play, where the payers come from and how they fund their existence. Another planned feature where he would like ideas or comments will be on the marketing of jazz especially the many clubs in our region where some are excellent at their promotion and others less so!

For jazz fans there is a new blog which is well worth reading, written by Josh Jennings. The British Jazz Blog aims to celebrate, and give a platform to, the fantastic British jazz scene. Focusing on the contemporary side of the genre, the articles are written in a personal, informal manner, ideal for getting people from outside of the genre just as excited about the music as hardcore fans of jazz! www.britishjazzblog.com

And finally … NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. We will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased.  If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them.

5. We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!
