12th August - Paul Lamb and the King Snakes: http://www.paullamb.com/index.html
The
incomparable Paul Lamb and the King Snakes need no introduction to
blues aficionados. Paul started playing on the club scene in the early
seventies and represented Great Britain in the 1974 world harmonica
championships which led to a time with Sonny Terry - Paul has said, ‘It
was a great learning period for me with the maestro. Sonny was very kind
and spent a lot of time educating me about the Blues’.
Paul has
become known around the world as one of the foremost blues harmonica
players playing with many famous blues players. He and his band have won
countless awards and sold record breaking quantities of albums and Paul
himself has been inducted into the British Blues Awards Hall of Fame.
With Chad Strentz vocals and guitar and Andy Lamb, Paul’s son, playing
dynamic guitar, Paul Lamb and the King Snakes blow up a storm playing
real blues, boogie, swing and good time jump and are a stunning act not
to be missed.
26th August - Jo Fooks and the Ted Beament Trio: http://www.freewebs.com/jofooks/
Jo Fooks sax, Ted Beament keyboards, Val Mannix bass and Buster Birch drums.
Born
in Edinburgh, Jo began learning the saxophone at 15. In 1992 she won
'The Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year'. She went on to study
saxophone at the Guildhall School of music in London (1995-99) and at
the Berklee School of music in Boston after receiving a full fee
scholarship for the summer jazz programme. After recording her debut
album, "Here and Now", legendary British trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton
invited Jo to join his eight-piece band. She toured and performed with
Hump whose fun filled, melodic approach to music was to be a huge
influence. Jo also recorded and worked with Acker Bilk and played
alongside Tina May, Joe Temperley, Scott Hamilton, Elkie Brooks and many
others. Her mellow tone is often compared to Stan getz and Zoot
Simms. Jo began to compose in 2004 after learning and analysing a wide
variety of Jazz standards and was described by Hump as, ‘a brilliantly
inventive player and composer’. She currently gigs in and around the
London area and her teaching positions have included tutoring the RAF
bands men (2000-2006).
Backed by the local boy made good, (he also
played in Hump’s band) Ted Beament's Trio need no introduction, having
performed many brilliant gigs here in the past.
9th September - The Fobo Jug Band: http://fobojugband.com/
Harpo harmonica and washboard, Speed Dial Simmonds guitar, vocals and kazoo and Cripple Fingers piano.
The
FoBo Jug Band are an acoustic trio stomping and hollering blues,
country and ragtime classics of the prohibition with fantastic ability
and love for the music they play. They are one of the most impressive
Country Blues and Ragtime Trios on the circuit. Their music is quite
simply full of toe tapping joy displaying great musicality with an
authentic feel that rings true.
They have played, the London Jazz
Festival, headlined the Blues Shakedown festival, the Ignite Series at
the Royal Albert Hall and Wilton’s Music Hall and have several
residencies at some of London’s finest music venues. They like to
holler and stomp at any opportunity, so if you want to stomp and holler
until your feet drop don’t miss what will be a great gig. Unfortunately
the boys don’t have a jug so please come along and give generously.
30th September - Jim Mullen with the Brian Dee Trio: www.jazzwisemagazine.com/component/content/article?id=4071:jim-mullen-guitar
Jim Mullen guitar, Brian Dee keyboard, Len Skeats, bass Duncan Gaffney drums
In
conjunction with saxophonist and long-time collaborator Dick Morrissey,
Jim Mullen spearheaded the British jazz-fusion movement of the 1970s.
Born in 1945 in Glasgow, Jim acquired his first guitar at age eight,
soon after discovering jazz through an older friend. Although he later
studied journalism, he remained a fixture of the local jazz circuit,
ultimately forming a group with tenor saxophonist Malcolm Duncan and
keyboardist Roger Ball.
Mullen relocated to London in 1969, joined
Pete Brown's Piblokto!, and then signed on with Brian Auger's Oblivion
Express, cementing his credentials in the nascent jazz-rock culture.
Stints with Vinegar Joe and Kokomo followed, and in the early 1970s he
also collaborated with Duncan and Ball in their blue-eyed funk unit the
Average White Band. Via the AWB, Mullen met Morrissey, a veteran of the
much-respected jazz-rock vehicle If. In 1977, they teamed as a duo for
Up, embracing everything from bop to pop to funk and found favour with
listeners on both sides of the jazz-rock dyad via acclaimed efforts such
as 1979's Cape Wrath. In all, Morrissey and Mullen co-headlined six
albums, which increasingly veered towards the mainstream, but never
earned the American commercial foothold that would have vaulted their
career to the next level.
Morrissey and Mullen finally split
following 1988's Happy Hour, and Mullen went on to work with vocalist

Backed by the local boy made good, (he also
played in Hump’s band) Ted Beament's Trio need no introduction, having
performed many brilliant gigs here in the past.

simply full of toe tapping joy displaying great musicality with an
authentic feel that rings true.
Claire Martin. He also headlined a series of LPs including Rule of Thumb
and Soundbites. An in-demand sideman, Mullen backed American giants
including Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, and Terry Callier. In the summer of
2000, he reunited with Morrissey, just months prior to the Morrissey's
death from spinal cancer.
