*************************** NEW THIS WEEK ***************************
Priory Park Bandstand, Victoria Avenue, Southend SS2 6ND, 3 pm to 5 pm. Free!
Saturday 11 May: The Sidewinders
The Sidewinders are devoted to the music of the golden era of jazz from the late 50s and early 60s exemplified by the output of the famous Blue Note label. New York musicians such as Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, and Horace Silver started to incorporate elements of soul, R’n’B, Latin, blues and gospel into their hard-driving jazz, with tight arrangements and an eye to engaging the audience. We celebrate this style with tunes from these masters and more. Expect solid grooves and great tunes. Dave Jago (trombone), Bob Peachey (saxes), Tony Gooderham (piano), Jose Canha (bass) and Simon Harwood (drums)
Sunday 26 May: Timeline
Timeline are a contemporary jazz quintet playing a mixture of originals and modern classics, and lesser known numbers that interest us. Expect an eclectic mixture of numbers by such masters as Pat Metheny and Wes Montgomery, by way of Steps Ahead and Sam Rivers, though to Prince, alongside a clutch of original compositions. Mike Sagrott (guitar), Dave Jago (trombone), Tony Gooderham (Piano), Geof Harris (bass) and Simon Harwood (drums).

‘TAKE FIVE’ PAUL featuring ANDY LINHAM, alto saxophone, with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.
Take Five: is the story of a jazz artist, Paul Desmond, who transcended genres to establish one of the most immediately recognisable sounds in all of music. Long before his success as the alto saxophonist with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, decades before he wrote "Take Five," Desmond determined that he would be himself, never a disciple or an imitator, whatever the cost. Unfortunately Paul, after years of smoking and ill health died in 1977 at the very young age of 52, but remains a widely recognised genius as a music improviser with his warm delicate tone and taste that he likened to as a ‘Very Dry Martini’.
Andy Linham, exploring the music of Paul Desmond this evening, is more than a talented young jazz reed player, he is a performer with a portfolio that is hard to keep up with. He plays in several bands, leads his own London Big Band and small groups, composes and arranges music, is a primary school teacher, a music tutor and involved with musical theatre. However, after a deep breath, it is his quirkily dry sense of humour that comes through in his conversations as well as in his music. Born in Havering, he went to Coopers Coborn School in Upminster and after graduating from Leeds College of Music with a BA [Hon] degree in 2010, where he won the coveted Yamaha Jazz Scholarship Award, he returned to London and did a master’s degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Now that, for sure, looks good on a CV.
This comment from ‘Jazzwise’ magazine, says it all! “Whether on a rapid fire or slow burn setting, Andrew Linham is a musician of tremendous flow and invention.’
Tuesday, 28th May, 2019
‘SHADES OF MILES’ featuring PAUL HIGGS, trumpet, with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Les Cirkel, kit.
Miles Davis was the major force in the jazz world as a trumpeter, bandleader and composer. After leaving the Juilliard School [Institute of Musical Art] he was soon playing a fast improvisational style of jazz that defined the modern jazz era. From 1945-1991 he was for ever at the forefront experimenting and furthering jazz with ‘fusion’ of jazz and rock. Drug abuse and alcohol blighted his life between 1975/1980 until meeting the actress Cicely Tyson, who helped him before marrying him. In his latter years he played with Quincy Jones at the Montreau Jazz Festival performing his earlier work for which he received a Grammy Award in 1991. Sadly he succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 65 and in 1993 he was posthumously awarded another Grammy Award, for his lasting influence on jazz.
Paul Higgs, a much sought after multi-instrumentalist, making another welcome visit to the Club and this time with one of his own shows, ’Shades of Miles’ a musical biography of probably the most influential trumpeter of the twentieth century, Miles Davis. Paul, renowned as one of UK’s leading trumpet players and composers, continues to have an extensive musical career in TV and theatre where he was MD for the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Coy’s. Now concentrating on his love of jazz composition, arranging, recording and directing others in his own recording studio, he still, time permitting, plays at venues whenever the opportunity arises. Another enlightening lesson of jazz by this superlative musician awaits you.
Tuesday, 25th June, 2019
MUSICAL POTPOURRI, featuring JOHN WITHERS, vibes, and MARTIN NICKLESS, clarinet, with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.
John Withers, a regular to the Club, makes another welcome return, again with his magical vibraphone to bring you a musical potpourri of melodies. John is a master of selecting the more mature melodies, those that don’t readily come to mind, but all certainly excellent tunes that appeal to everyones taste after John’s deft arrangements are added. I can’t be sure John has ever played with Martin before so the melodies or tunes agreed by these two experienced and fine musicians awaits us all assuring a great evening’s entertainment.
Martin Nickless, clarinet, a regular with the Carlton Jazz group at our end of year gig, makes clear his first love in music is for the big band. His career includes various genres of music from classical to pop and has played for many West End shows, with sessions for composer Stanley Myers as well as touring with Jack Jones, Frankie Vaughan & Norman Wisdom. Martin is also known for his writing and arranging and is clearly an outstanding exponent of the clarinet and called upon for many other gigs and tonights meeting with John will be another to remember.

26th April - Nigel Price Quartet
Nigel Price guitar, Vasilis Xenopoulos sax, Arnie Somogi bass and Sebastian de Krom drums.
Over a career spanning more than 25 years, award winning jazz guitarist Nigel Price has become widely acknowledged as one of the hardest working musicians in the business (56 date tour in late 2016) (over 500 appearances at Ronnie Scott’s). Starting his professional career in his early 20s, Nigel toured Europe with various reggae and funk bands before settling on a solo guitar career and turning his attention to jazz. Citing early influences as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Nigel honed his craft by attending gigs and sitting in with the players of the time. Nigel has played on more than 50 albums including 5 as a leader, spent ten years with acid jazz outfit The Filthy Six, was a member of James Taylor’s band for 3 years (with whom he recorded 5 albums) and performed with the legendary David Axelrod. He has also taught at The International Guitar Foundation at King’s Place, London.
Saxophonist and composer Vasilis Xenopoulos is one of the most accomplished Greek jazz musicians of his generation. London became his permanent home after graduating from the infamous Berklee College of Music, and gradually established himself as one of London’s up and coming jazz saxophonists. He has worked with some of the best musicians in the British jazz scene but far too many to list here, Vasilis has appeared in many guises, as guest soloist, as band leader or as saxophone section leader in jazz venues and jazz festivals throughout the UK but in 2017 Nigel and Vasilis created the XPQ (Xenopoulos/Price Quartet) and recorded their first album under that brand, “Sidekicks" which celebrates some of the most successful guitar/sax pairings in the history of jazz.
17th May - The Untouchables
Keith Parker, harp and vocals, Peter Ellison, guitar and vocals, Paul 'Chuck' Green, doghouse bass and Malcolm 'Eddie the Legend' Buckland, drums.
The Untouchables are champions of raw blues, basing their sound on the swinging soul of the great artists who recorded for Chess Records in the 50s. With a string bass, a vintage drum kit, a cranked guitar through a hot valve amp and a wailing harp, this band turns any venue into a rocking juke joint.
They play sparse, tasteful Chicago blues. Not blues rock but tight, swinging, focussed, authentic sounding urban blues, with every element honed to its bare essentials in an unostentatious display of taste and restraint. These players have lived and breathed the style until it's so much a part of them that it oozes out of their pores. If you like Little Walter, Bo Diddley or Willie Dixon, then this is as close as you’ll get to seeing them live.
31st May - Portrait of Cannonball with Tony Kofi and Andy Davies
Tony Kofi sax, Andy Davies trumpet, Alex Webb piano, Andrew Cleyndert bass, Alfonso Vitale drums with special guest vocalist Deelee Dube.
Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley was one of the best-loved figures in post-war jazz. Hailed as ‘the new Bird’, he made historic recordings with Miles Davis and John Coltrane as well as having many crossover hits as a pioneer of soul-jazz. Spanning bebop to jazz-funk, he was an unfailingly inventive and communicative virtuoso. He died on August 8, 1975; 2019 would have been his 91st year.
Alto sax master Tony Kofi fronts this loving celebration of the jazz giant Julian ‘Cannnonball’ Adderley. The group traces the explosive music of Cannonball from his first session as leader in 1955 through work with Miles Davis to the soul-jazz of the late 1960s with Deelee Dube recollecting the memorable 1961 collaboration with Nancy Wilson.
In 2016 Deelee Dube was the first non-American winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Award whilst Toni Kofi is a multi-award winner himself. Andy Davies is one of London’s top new jazz stars leading his own band, the Andy Davies Quartet, currently the resident band at the famous Ronnie Scotts’ Wednesday night jam session whilst also being much in demand as a solo player working with many leading jazz vocalists
Alex Webb is a songwriter, arranger and pianist and his songs have been recorded by numerous jazz singers. Together with Andrew Cleyndert and Alfonso Vitale the three combine to provide a really tight rhythm section.

Ben Holder is one of the most gifted and exciting young jazz violinists in the UK. Taught classically from the age of six, he studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire and began gigging at the tender age of 14. During his classical studies, Ben began listening to Jazz - classic masters such as Benny Goodman and Oscar Peterson and of course the great jazz violinists including Grappelli, Joe Venuti and the awe inspiring Stuff Smith. Ben's innate sense of swing rhythm - something which often eludes classical players - stems from those early listening sessions and his various awards bear testimony to his abilities. Ben now plays all over the UK as well as abroad thanks to his energy, personality and musical mastership. A first call, stand-out jazz violinist for many of the UK's top clubs and studios.
