He has toured America and Europe with Bryan Ferry’s band, been a regular with the BBC Big Band and Radio Orchestra, written and arranged countless numbers, appeared as a session musician on albums, performed on film and television soundtracks and jingles such as the Tetley Bitter series of adverts as well as performing and recording on his own.
Brain Dee and his Trio are no strangers to Marigolds. Rumours that the Trio are soon to be known as the Marigolds Regulars have no basis in fact.

14th November - Jimmy C and the Bluesdragons  www.bluesdragons.com & www.myspace.com/jimmycandthebluesdragons

Yet another fantastic band returning to Marigolds by popular demand.  Canadian-born singer, guitarist Jimmy C moved to Britain via Vancouver, San Francisco and Japan earning a deserved reputation as one of the most entertaining bands on the London circuit.  Playing a repertoire which includes blues classics and various Kings of the blues, they follow through to the music which the British Blues Invasion of North America left in its wake. They're not blues purists but point out neither were the blues greats - their mission is to entertain and get you dancing.  Jimmy C & the Blues Dragons play sharp snappy blues, with a little bit of edge and an element of fun and seem able to communicate this to audiences.

28th November - A Tribute to Louis Armstrong

Carol Braithwaite vocals, Enrico Tommaso trumpet, Tim Huskisson keyboards, Murray Salmon bass and Martin Guy drums.

Carol’s song book includes all the numbers from the great singers of jazz, from the 20’s to the 50’s. Born into a musical family she was influenced by Ottilie Patterson, Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday and of course Ella Fitzgerald.
Enrico Tomasso is considered one of today's finest trumpeters, a regular nominee and winner at the British Jazz Awards. With an international reputation, Enrico is one of the major players on the British jazz scene but his biggest inspiration was Louis Armstrong, whom he met and played for during Louis' visits to England in the sixties
Backing them is a line-up of some of the most in-demand musicians on the Jazz club circuit.  Together they are going to play a tribute to the late great Louis Armstrong.

12th December - The Fugitives

Terry Boon, bass, vocals and acoustic guitar, Keith Harriss, electric guitar, slide guitar, harp and vocals and Arthur Oughton, drums and vocals.

The Fugitives are back by popular demand, stronger than ever with their eclectic mix of material that spans 50’s swing through Chicago and Delta Blues to their take on more up to date material. There’s even the odd r’n’b and acoustic number for good measure and the mix of instrumentation keeps things interesting.  Above all they swing.

Jason has worked alongside giants like Wayne Shorter, Sting, Jeff Beck, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins.  Classically trained but inspired by Herbie Hancock, Jason Rebello first came to the attention of one of the founders of jazz fusion, Wayne Shorter who produced Jason’s first album. Jason produced a further two albums and toured extensively with his own band before he was invited by Sting join his band in 1998, recording with Sting on his Grammy winning albums Brand New Day, All This Time and Sacred Love. He subsequently toured and recorded with Jeff Beck and worked with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Pee Wee Ellis, Joss Stone, Madeline Peyroux, Manu Katche and Charlene Soraia.  Tonight is an exceptional treat as he focuses on one of jazz's ultimate piano heroes in the classic drummer-less setting.

FLEUR STEVENSON FORTHCOMING GIGS www.fleurstevensonjazz.co.uk http://fleurstevensonjazz.co.uk www.facebook.com/FleurStevensonJazz

Fleur is one of the new breed of jazz singers who, having initially trained classically in voice and trumpet, later found her true passion for jazz. Fleur began singing at small clubs and bars only to find she adored the sense of freedom that jazz singing can bring and quickly gained an impressive local following. Fleur is privileged to be a student of The First Lady of British Jazz, Claire Martin, and the collaboration has produced a very fine performer with musical intellect and skill as an improviser. Her influences spanning jazz, soul and blues genres, include Carman McRae, Shirley Horn, Ella Fitzgerald and Chris Connor.

Vintage French Musette Social Dance  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6A0LyR6fu8&feature=youtu.be
On Remembrance Sunday, we celebrate the lives of our parents, grandparents and great grand-parents who lived through World War I and II by dressing up and dancing the way they would have dressed and danced.  In the 1920s to 1950s, French people attended social dances called Bals Musette where the accordion played the latest hit tunes and dances of the day such as javas, valses musettes, tangos and foxtrots.
At Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec in South East London, we recreate a typical Bal Musette of the period called La Guinguette aux Moineaux where you can learn the steps and attitude of the French java and valse musette with dance teacher Adriana Candeias.
All are welcome! Whether you are an advanced dancer or a complete novice, you can dance the French java, it’s so easy to dance and great fun!
In the great atmosphere of Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec, a stone’s throw from Elephant and Castle or Kennington tube station, La Guinguette aux Moineaux is an authentic vintage Bal Musette with bunting and live music from The Sparrows of Paris, with accordion, guitar and double bass accompanying French chanteuse Carolyn Saint-Pé.

Tony Jacobs News

Twice a year at South Downs Holiday Village near Chichester, I present a weekend of jazz, swing and cabaret. Guests have included Neville Dickie and his Rhythmakers, the Bateman Brothers, the Sue Greenway Big Band, Louise Cookman, Eleanor Keenan, Phil Phillips, and many others.  My forthcoming weekend, from Friday October 24th, features the Gresty/White Ragtimers, the Jimmy Hastings Quartet, the Jim Barry Quintet with myself and Louise Cookman (www.louisecookman.com) and my Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra (www.tuxedojazzorchestra.com) http://www.1940sukradio.co.uk/#Live_Event_Entertainment which also serves to remind people about the excellent UK 1940s Radio Station for whom I present a weekly programme. I can be contacted at t...@tonyjacobs.net
Finally, a propos of the UK 1940s Radio Station, you’ll be interested that the Station gets up to over 80,000 listeners every day – and, there is a huge amount of positive feedback from young people – some of whom say they study to its music! So, we must not give up hope!!

*** MUSIC COURSES ***

New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy – The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all ‘tools of the trade’.

Where: Ealing W5, West London

When: Course A – Fortnightly on Sundays plus performance dates and masterclasses
Course B – Fortnightly on Saturdays and as above
Course C – Monday evenings

Who for: Individuals who are serious about developing their knowledge and skills with a view to creating successful jazz performance – all styles, all ages, singers and instrumentalists.

Why: BIVJA is keen to encourage mature students as well as young people at the start of their careers.

There are very few bespoke courses for those who wish to empower themselves with a greater understanding of the rhythm section, band leading and performance confidence. Is it for me? Call for an informal chat on 020 8992 1571 (leave message and we’ll call you back).

UNIQUE – BIVJA promotes a warm but challenging environment and it’s different because of its very ‘hands on’ approach. As the course develops ALL students will have acquired some practical knowledge of piano, bass, kit and percussion playing and band leading skills in addition to vocal and technical skills. Sessions will be followed by a de-brief, student feedback, career support and Q+A – again a unique opportunity

Specialist workshops – Participants will have access to workshops on specific skills such as recording, PA set up and mixing and workshops with visiting professional singers, instrumentalists and mentors. Tutors will vary including Gareth Williams – piano; Peter Ind – bass; Les Cirkel – drums. The support group created by this enterprise will assist students in self-promotion and performance opportunities.

BIVJA Director – Verona Chard – 020 8992 1571 – leave message, and contact details. 07985 440902 www.veronachard.com/bivja v...@veronachard.com

Saxophone Workshop

The saxophone workshop is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price.
Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone.
This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion.
The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

7:30pm – 9:30pm   £7 Entry   Dates: (Thursdays)

9th, 23rd October,

Jazz Workshop

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P’s Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

And finally … NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. We will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Please send all items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them.

5. We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks
