A new Jazz Jam night at the Forester's Arms, Colchester. Held on the last Thursday of every month. Members of the band of the parachute regiment Big Band are hosting an evening of Jazz where they will play a short set of music until they open up the floor to anyone who wants to Jam, any ability. The house band consists of: Pianist, Drummer, Bass, Trombone and Trumpet.

TJ Johnson is considered to be one of the UK’s most charismatic highly revered jazz and blues singers. Backed by his group of top London based musicians, TJ plays an extraordinary blend of music that transcends the boundaries of jazz, blues, soul and country  and is influenced by some of the greats such as Ray Charles, Dr John, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, BB King, Nina Simone, Alberta Hunter, Frank Sinatra and many more. His distinctive voice and unique stage manner always brings the band and the audience together to create an intimate yet exciting atmosphere that is rarely equalled.   They have toured extensively both in the UK and overseas for over twenty years and while still maintaining a high profile at international festivals and venues, TJ is also very involved in the vibrant London music scene. TJ’s style and mix of music seems to be very popular with the young trendy in-crowd and older jazz and blues fans alike. They have also sold out eight times running at London’s Ronnie Scott’s.

Award winning Ben Holder is one of the finest swing jazz violinists in the UK, he also sings and plays piano. Ben's passion is his quartet, a truly fabulous ensemble, delighting audiences with all styles of jazz, blues and swing.  Ben has taken the time and energy to develop his own original style of music, resulting in some breathtaking, inventive compositions. During his classical studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire, Ben began listening to Jazz – classic masters such as Benny Goodman and Oscar Peterson and the great jazz violinists including Grappelli, Joe Venuti and the awe inspiring Stuff Smith. Ben's innate sense of swing rhythm (something which often eludes classical players) stems from those early listening sessions – and his various awards bear testimony to his abilities. A first call jazz violinist for many of the country's top bands and studios. Led by Ben on violin, piano and vocals, this group features the melodic Jez Cook on guitar, the great Paul Jefferies on double bass and the incredible drummer Malcolm Garrett

Jonathan Vinten.  As pianist with George Melly and John Chilton’s Feetwarmers for over 10 years, Jonathan toured  extensively, at home and abroad, playing over 250 theatre concerts a year and making numerous TV and radio appearances. He also performed month-long Christmas seasons at Ronnie Scott’s every year during this time and has worked with Terry Lightfoot, Aker Bilk and Kenny Ball.  Jonathan has been a featured guest on tours in Europe. He has performed at the Los Angeles Jazz Festival, the prestigious Nice Jazz Festival and with many visiting American musicians.  Jonathan has a Masters degree in Composition for Film and Television and has had his works performed at London ’s Festival Hall. Regularly appears in our Club’s Summer Pianorama
Julian Marc Stringle made his TV debut with Acker Bilk when he was just 14. The show featured Julian's teenage Dixieland band "Young Jazz" that included the Sidwell brothers on Trumpet & Trombone, Paul Clarvis on Drums, Andy Cleyndert on Bass, and Sam Brown vocals.  At 17 he formed a Modern Jazz quintet and toured Europe with Dave Cliff, Nick Weldon, Andy Cleyndert and Mark Taylor.   He has written over 30 TV jingles and documentary film scores. In Paris he arranged and conducted a big band album for Charles Aznavour. He has produced and performed on many audio books for children.  His first album 'Pathfinder' featured John Parricelli, Dudley Phillips, James Bannerman and Ralph Salmins. Polygram TV released ‘Beach Samba' a Latin Classics dance album featuring Julian with an 18 piece big band and strings. Merfangle Music have released two albums featuring Julian and The Dream Band - 'Sundance’ and ‘Blues for the morning after’. He has three further albums in production. He was voted 'Best Clarinettist' at the British Jazz Awards 2006.His major influences have been Artie Shaw, Peanuts Hucko, Buddy De Franco, Eddie Daniels, Oscar Peterson - and Delius!

Andy Dickens lively trumpet and flugelhorn playing evokes the warmth and exuberance of Mardi Gras New Orleans; the heat of Chicago club land and the excitement of small-band New York swing. A frequent guest at European jazz festivals, he has played with many English and American notables including Slim Gaillard; Ken Peplowski; Humphrey Littleton; Terry Lightfoot; Judith Durham; Clark Tracey; Bruce Turner; Jools Holland;  Duncan Lamont; David Newton & Pete Allen.
Dave Hewitt  (trombonist) toured for three years in the Theatre Show ‘Basin Street to Broadway’ with Georgie Fame.  He has guested with bands such as that of Terry Lightfoot, Freddie Randall All Stars, The Alan Elsdon All Stars, Laurie Chescoe’s Good Time Jazz Band and Keith Smith’s Hefty Jazz.  He has played with many visiting Americans, including Wild Bill Davison, Peanuts Hucko, and Kenny Davern. Notably, he appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Teddy Wilson and Stèphane Grappelli.
Andy Lawrence double bass – Andy is very experienced, having been Terry Lightfoot’s bass man for many years, as well as being in demand as a deputy for most professional Jazz bands. Andy has been doing most of the Max Collie Rhythm Aces gigs during the last few years travelling from Liverpool.

We welcome back Jeff Hooper from South Wales who launched his career after winning ITVs New Faces, age fourteen, going on to appear in a variety of TV shows, gaining a recording contract with EMI and a place in the charts with his debut single. Travelling to America, he performed at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas – home of the ‘Rat Pack.’ Returning to the UK, Jeff joined the Syd Lawrence Orchestra for a decade as lead singer, touring the UK, Europe and worldwide, appearing in major venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall, there followed regular recordings for radio and TV.    During this time he worked with the great Matt Monro who taught him how to play poker and tie a bow tie!!  Jeff’s Swing Easy band have been selected once again to be the Strictly Come Dancing Tour Band.   Jeff breathes new life into the music of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat “King” Cole, Vic Damone, Jack Jones, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Matt Monro and Mel Tormé with a relaxed, emotive style. Along with his many solo cabaret appearances and performing with his own Jazz trio, Jeff runs his own Big Band and has recently performed appeared at Gala concerts with Katherine Jenkins and Charlotte Church. Jeff  is the ultimate professional, dedicated to his art. His flawless diction and great musical instinct means he takes a classic and makes it ‘his own’.

After 20 successive sold out shows at Ronnie Scott’s we welcome back Ray Gelato and The Giants.  Constantly they blow the lid off Ronnie Scott’s Club in awesome fashion.  Ray, a wonderful sax player and superb front man, is a London boy heavily influenced by the likes of Louis Prima, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Louis Jordan and Coleman Hawkins. The Giants’ brilliant horn section is made up of Andy Rogers - trombone, Danny Marsden - trumpet and Olly Wilby - saxophone, who’s joint talent goes beyond the brass, supplying some playful call and response backing vocals.  The double bass player Manuel Alvarez and amazing drummer Ed Richardson are always on fire together creating smoking hot rhythms and are the driving energy of the band.  Completing         the seven piece line-up is the talented ever smiling jazz pianist Gunther Kurmayr tickling the ivories with great gusto.  (Admission £17.50 by ticket only – available solely on club nights)

In 2014, Ken was the recipient of the Sarasota Jazz Festival’s “Satchmo” award, given to him for his “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz”; in March, Ken was also the guest of honour at a “Highlights In Jazz” concert in NYC saluting him for “his matchless musical achievements”. He was the 2015 recipient of Hot House Magazine’s “Fans’ Decision Jazz Award” on clarinet.

Tuesday, 29th August   -   HORNS OUT FRONT  featuring the multi-instrumentalist, Paul Higgs, trumpet, and Kevin Mcmahon, tenor sax, a very smooth musician, both of whom will be Horns Out Front accompanied by the resident trio.

Paul Higgs, a frequent visitor to the Club continues to perform at the highest level blending classical and jazz styles with simple ease. His CD ‘Pavanne’ reached No.1 in One World Charts.   His recent collaboration with the Chris Ingram Quartet on the crafted biography of Hoagy Carmichael created CD’s ‘Hoagy’  and ‘Dudley’  highlighting the delightful music of Dudley Moore is bringing great acclaim. Paul’s own show titled ‘A Brief History of Jazz’ is a fantastic tour of jazz history as recorded by past trumpeters.
Kevin Mcmahon hails from Dublin, and currently leads his group ‘Swing Odyssey’ and plays at top London venues. His influences have been the great tenor players of Stan Getz, Lester Young and Dexter Gordon with a sound that veers between mainstream to swing with ballads and blues. He has recorded three of CD’s with  ‘Sometimes I’m Happy’, ’Stardust’ and his latest ‘Your Choice’.  Welcome back Kevin with those ballads and blues reflecting classic looks and taste.

Tuesday, 26th September  -    SINATRA’S SONGBOOK featuring John Withers,  vibraphone, accompanying Paul Wood, vocals, through the vast songbook of Frank Sinatra with which Paul entertained for many years on cruises with his ‘Salute to Sinatra’ tour.

John Withers, a self taught percussionist at home with either drums or vibraphone has played with a number of big bands as well as a host of celebrities. He always entertains, so is it little wonder he is in constant demand gigging around jazz clubs with his eclectic choice of music. Tonight his programme will centre around Sinatra’s Songbook.
Paul Wood, found singing came naturally, soon entertaining publicly at every opportunity. He is a well respected in demand vocalist with his own particular approach to a song whether a delicate ballad or rhythmic swing tune that not many are able to match. He has travelled extensively in Europe and North America appearing with many big bands such as Glenn Miller Memorial Orchestra, Syd Lawrence Orchestra and James Last to name but a few. Listen to him croon his way through the Sinatra Songbook with ease and that cheeky little smile.

Tuesday, 31st October  -    THE DYNAMIC DUO   featuring Dominic Ashworth, guitar and Julian Marc Stringle, clarinet & sax bringing you an evening of unbelievable music bliss that always embraces this duo wherever they appear such is the understanding between them.

Dominic Ashworth, an exceptionally talented Canadian guitarist, who is a regular visitor to the Club for which we are extremely lucky  to have as our guest, with his services being in great demand playing and touring with groups such as, Picante Latin Band, The Dream Band and also guesting with many other star musicians across the country. No matter the tempo, genre, style Dominic ticks all the boxes to ensure his audience is always wanting more.
Julian Marc Stringle, a child clarinet prodigy with a flamboyant air, and that’s no pun, is the other part of this wondrous duo who seamlessly play as if one such is their understanding of each other’s flawless.musical ability, Julian has many mantels in the music world to all the genres, as well as his composing, arranging, writing, teaching and with his continuous gigging around the country it is little wonder that the late Johnny Dankworth quoted that he is the finest exponent of the clarinet in recent decades.

Mike Cotton trumpet & vocals played in various trad jazz bands in the late '50s, and in 1960 formed a group of his own and their sound was pure Dixieland. Known as the Mike Cotton Jazzmen the group played as many as 300 gigs a year. But as music styles  constantly change Mike also changed and became known to play with a variety of entertainers. In the years since, he has remained      active as a session musician, and in the '90s played with the 100 Club All-Stars, while the Mike Cotton Sound's name periodically surfaces, more thorough the history of British traditional jazz.
Paul Higgs, keyboards, needs no introduction being a regular visitor to the Club in a variety of guises that this multi-instrumentalist performs across the country usually with his preferred instrument, trumpet. He currently is touring with the fantastic Chris Ingham Quartet with the brilliant musical biographies, ‘Hoagy’ and ‘Dudley’ portraying the lives and music of the legends Hoagy Carmichael and Dudley Moore both of which are receiving critical acclaim across the country. However on this occasion he will be enlightening  you to his excellent keyboard skills of a master musician.
Derek Clenshaw trombonist, so often the choice of many top bandleaders, when in need of a freelance jazz musician. Performing  with all UK jazz stars, with a music preference for mainstream and jazz standards, along with having that sweet touch with the warm rounded sound of the trombone. Derek has been seen in many bands, mainstream and traditional, and has played with such well-known names as Humphrey Lyttleton, Freddie Randall, Terry Lightfoot, Janusz Carmello, Bob Kerr, Julian Marc Stringle,  Mike “Magic” Henry, Mike Cotton, Bruce Adams, John Crocker, Enrico Tomasso and Simon Spillett.
Martin Nickless, clarinet, makes clear his first love in music is for the big band and his career includes various genres of music from classical to pop.  He has played for many West End shows, sessions for composer Stanley Myers as well as touring with Jack Jones, Frankie Vaughan & Norman Wisdom. Martin is also known for his writing and arranging and is clearly an outstanding exponent of the clarinet and called upon for many gigs.
Ted 'the hat' Simkins, skeletal bass, and a member of the resident trio, must be one of the oldest bass players around, but all musicians still wish for the same energy and prowess that he puts in at every gig. No matter the style or genre Ted fits into the  groove automatically such is the experience of this much admired musician whose main interest at one time was photography.   Whatever it is that keeps him going, if he could bottle it he would make a fortune.
Dave Grant, drums, the leader of the resident trio at Jazz at O B’s primarily in the interest of keeping Jazz live in Brentwood. Dave enjoys the  ‘Dixieland’ style of jazz having played with many musicians of that genre and the many others who have guested at the  Club. He has his own quartet playing local gigs and also plays with Carlton Jazz Band.

Canadian-born singer, guitarist Jimmy C moved to Britain via Vancouver, San Francisco and Japan since when Jimmy and the band are earning a deserved reputation as one of the most entertaining and hard-working bands on the London circuit.
Playing a repertoire which includes blues classics from Robert Johnson and T-bone Walker, various Kings of the blues, that is Albert, Freddie and BB, they follow through to the music which the British Blues Invasion of North America left in its wake, from the Rolling Stones to Cream, from Jimi Hendrix to the Doors and even Steppenwolf They freely admit they are not blues purists but as they point out neither were the blues greats - their mission is to do what Muddy Waters did, and what Rufus Thomas did, to entertain and get you dancing.

25^th August - The Humphrey Lyttleton Band

Tony Fisher trumpet, Jimmy Hastings alto sax, clarinet & flute, Robert Fowler tenor sax, baritone sax & clarinet, Ray Wordsworth trombone, Adrian Macintosh drums, Ted Beament piano and John Rees-Jones bass. 
In January 2008, Humphrey Lyttelton celebrated sixty years as a bandleader, leading a band which he ranked as one of the very best of his career. It's hallmark is versatility, reflected in a repertoire which extends from early traditional to modern by way of Ellington and Basie.
Members of the late Humphrey Lyttelton's band continue to fly the flag. The band is now joined by trumpeter Tony Fisher who joined after Humph's death. The hallmark of the band is versatility. Not to be forgotten are Humph's compositions, of which he recorded over two hundred, including Bad Penny Blues.  Unsurprisingly the prevailing reaction from audiences is 'We never thought a jazz concert could have such variety'.

The Barefoot Doctors are fronted by Bluesy songstress Stella Hensley and Blues, Slide, Ragtime guitarist Chris Newman, and backed by the unstoppable grooves of bassist Fabian Bonner and the shamanic drumming of drummer Ian Croft.
​Chris Newman worked with The Climax Blues Band and then formed The Mississippi Houndogs with Climax front man Colin Cooper. This band also featured Pick Withers (Dire Straits), Roger Innis (Chaka Khan) and Terry Butters (Sutherland Bros).
​Chart success came in the early nineties with The Soul Survivors. Their recording of 'Woolly Bully' featured the infamous Vinnie Jones leading onto various TV shows and appearances. In the nineties Chris toured with Russell Gilbrook (Uriah Heep) on a Mapex Drum Clinic tour. The recording of An Acoustic Tribute to Rory Gallagher went on to see him performing the length and breadth of  Ireland, including the International Tribute Festival in Ballyshannon.
Stella Hensley has a smoky, sultry, velvet but powerful voice and has often been compared to Stevie Nicks and Alison Moyet. She has been co-writing songs for many years. Her words are heartfelt, personal and able to move even the coldest of hearts.

Rebop is Paul Higgs trumpet, Colin Watling tenor saxophone, Chris Ingham piano, Marianne Bidwell  bass and George Double drums.  Returning to Marigolds after some fantastic gigs the superb Rebop play innovative and exhilarating modern jazz pioneered by jazz greats such as Bird, Dizzy, Miles, Fats, Tadd, Bud, Monk, Bill, Red, Philly Joe, Paul C, Jimmy C, Wynton, Cannonball, Trane and many others.
Rebop looks to play classic jazz of the '40s and '50s and they do it very, very well. However, tonight’s gig will be a tribute to Horace Silver.  Horace Silver was an American jazz pianist, composer and band leader, born 2 Sept 1928 in Norwalk, Connecticut and died 18 June 2014. He was among the most influential jazz musicians of his lifetime and a pioneer of hard bop. He worked as a sideman and leader of his own bands especially pioneering the quintet instrumentation of tenor saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums.  He was a prolific recording artist and composer. As a composer, he led a return to an emphasis on melody and his legacy as a composer may be greater than as a pianist, because his works, many of which are jazz standards, continue to be performed and recorded worldwide today.

13^th August – The Nick Charles Quintet. A 5-piece band led by Nick Charles playing clarinet recreates the sound of Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet and stars from the 1930’s. Another visit this year from a fantastic band of musicians for an evening of classic small band jazz.

20^th August – The Frog Island Jazz Band. This famous traditional jazz band with the front line of Jim Hurd clarinet, John Whitehead trumpet and John Jeans trombone. Behind them are Brian Lawrence banjo, Chris Marchant drums and Rob Fullalove brass bass. The Frogs play 1920s and 1930’s New Orleans jazz. Bring your dancing shoes!

27^th August – The Jack Clifford Swingtette. Another wonderful end to another month of jazz at the club with an evening of traditional and jazz standards from the Swingtette. Jack’s clarinet and alto sax leads his ensemble with guests including, as usual, Tim Huskisson playing the piano.

Enrico is one of Britain's top jazz trumpeters - winning the best trumpet category in the British Jazz Awards twice. He is also a popular figure at European festivals and clubs. Tonight, he teams up with trombonist Roy Williams whose professional musical career has now spanned seven decades. Roy made his name as the regular trombonist with the Alex Welsh Band from 1965 to 1978. He has worked with many of the jazz greats including Peanuts Hucko and Scott Hamilton. Together Enrico and Roy recreate the work of jazz legends Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer to bring you an evening of terrific swinging jazz.

At the forefront of the British Jazz movement, Derek Nash has been a member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 2004, performing both live and on TV with such greats as Eric Clapton, Amy Winehouse, Chaka Khan, Gregory Porter, Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Sir Paul McCartney, Solomon Burke, Annie Lennox, Eddie Floyd, Sam Moore, Madeleine Peyroux, Roger Daltrey, David Sanborn, Eddi Reader and Tom Jones.

JAZZ AT THE CROWN.  This new Jazz venue at ‘The Crown’, Church Street, Great Ellingham, nr. Attleborough, Norfolk opened on the 11^th September. The aim is to create a Sunday evening Jazz scene once a month featuring some of East Anglia’s major Jazz musicians using a regular rhythm section of Nigel Portass - Keyboard, Jeff Burbidge - Bass Gtr and Bob Dore - Drums. The music will commence at 6.00pm and finish around 8.30 pm and will be free admission.

If playing as part of a group appeals to you, why not join John Seeley’s Jazz and Saxophone Group?  I run my own Jazz Workshop and Saxophone Workshop on alternative Thursday evenings, 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Michael and All Angels Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.  £7 Entry.   All ability levels and instruments are welcome, there is no need to book, just come along and join in!   We are a relaxed, friendly, welcoming group and are always looking for more members to join our Jazz family!

Jazz Workshop
The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.  The music used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.

Saxophone Workshop
The workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment.  Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer.  This includes music theory, methods of practice, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone.  This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on Classical and Jazz.

Weekly Saturday Jazz Workshops in Orpington (SE London) for anyone, any age, on any instrument, interested in developing their improvising skills and musicianship. It is a practical, performance based approach to learning in a nurturing group. Through the playing and study of standard jazz repertoire we cover some of the requirements for improvising including ear training, rhythmic skills, developing your harmonic understanding, learning transcriptions of some classic recordings and building a jazz vocabulary. The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy runs weekly in Hackney on Saturday afternoons, under the artistic direction of internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer Julian Joseph, offering talented young instrumentalists and vocalists aged 11-24, the opportunity to work with acclaimed jazz artists to develop their skills through a curriculum underpinned by an introduction to the American roots of jazz.

The Hertfordshire Music Service and North Herts Youth Jazz run the North Herts Youth Jazz Big Band rehearse Tues evenings, term time, at The North Herts Music School, Highbury House, Highbury Road, Hitchin SG4 9RU 01462 434052. Up to age 19.  Improvisers welcome but guidance and instruction will be given to all who wish it. They will perform at least once in public each term to promote the playing of jazz amoung youth. There is a termly fee.

Essex Music Services, part of Essex County Council provide ” Quality instrumental tuition and workshops .. , covering all major orchestral and band instruments and musical styles”. One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) for young musicians with a love for jazz with a min of grade 5 – audition entry. Meet monthly for rehearsals and also go on tour.
