THE GREAT GUITARS REVISITED, featuring the three guitars of DOMINIC ASHWORTH, ANDY WATSON and SIMON HURLEY with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.
Not one, not two but three amazingly talented guitarists, will tonight bring you a musical story on jazz from the 70’s and 80’s when three American guitarists joined forces and became known as The Great Guitars. They were, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd who left a lasting legacy of guitar styles that even remains innovative today. They covered a wide range of styles and genres as you will hear when our guests revisit their music and I am sure it will make you want to listen to The Great Guitars again and again.
Dominic Ashworth, an exceptionally talented Canadian guitarist, and regular guest to the Club, for which we are extremely lucky as his services are in great demand country wide touring with groups such as, Picante Latin Band, Rag & Bone Club, The Dream Band and accompanies many other jazz musicians. No matter the tempo, genre, style, Dominic ticks all the boxes ensuring his audience are always wanting more from this truly amazing musician.
Andy Watson graduated at City of Leeds College of Music, where so many of our jazz musicians studied. Andy has been a professional musician for the whole of his working life as a player and educator. Performing as a solo artist he has travelled extensively, appearing at many venues and festivals. His teaching work is in schools and colleges as both guitar teacher and lecturer and directs many workshops around the UK.
Simon Hurley picked up the guitar 25 years ago and, and having been self-taught, embarked upon a formal musical education in 2006. In 2010 he graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree at Colchester and began to study jazz under the tutelage of guitarist Andy Watson. He is inspired by Joe Pass and Martin Taylor, who has described his playing as ‘Just beautiful’. Simon divides his time between teaching, recording, accompanying and performing in and around S. E. England.
Tuesday, 26th March, 2019
An EVENING with ELLA and LOUIS featuring HILARY CAMERON, keys/vocals, and PAUL HIGGS, trumpet, with resident duo of Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.
Hilary Cameron trained as a classical pianist but later to spent two years in New York studying jazz at the Manhattan School of Music. Whilst there the opportunity arose for her to gain invaluable experience performing in Clubs and venues with a host of experienced musicians playing the New York circuit. Hilary is also an excellent jazz flautist and vocalist that not many people are aware of. On returning to London she was soon performing at Ronnie Scotts, Pizza on the Park and the Purcell Room on London’s South Bank along with festivals in London, Brecon and Birmingham before joining OB’s resident trio.
Paul Higgs, needs no introduction being a regular visitor, almost a season ticket holder, in a variety of guises that this multi-instrumentalist performs across the country. Apart from touring with the fantastic Chris Ingham Quartet he has a very busy schedule with his own one man shows of ‘A Brief History of Jazz’, ‘Shades of Miles’, ‘Quintessential’ and ‘Pavane’ the latter being on his CD, a collection of original compositions that takes you on a mystic musical journey. Tonight, Paul accompanies Hilary, in portraying the wonderful music of the duets between Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong who sang such brilliant tunes as, ‘Summertime’, ‘Nearness of You’. ‘Cheek to Cheek’. ‘Tenderly’ and ‘Moonlight in Vermont’.
Sit back and enjoy the artistry.

22nd February - Art Theman & Henry Lowther Quintet
Art Theman sax, Henry Lowther trumpet, Mike Gorman keyboards, Flo Moore bass and Stu Butterfield drums.
A self-taught musician, Art played tenor sax at Cambridge while studying medicine. Qualifying as a doctor he played in blues and R&B bands in the early 60s as well as backing groups for numerous pop sessions.
Art worked with Alexis Korner, Phil Seamen, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Long John Baldry. In the late 60s/early 70s Art started to favour jazz. He played with Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier and began a long and fruitful association with Stan Tracey, which continued into the 90s. Art has accompanied many visiting US jazzmen too many to list here.
Had Art chosen a musical career he would have doubtless been an international artist of some stature. Attaining his high standing while working as a consultant surgeon, is testimony to his remarkable talents.
A wit might say that Henry’s career peaked when he played at Woodstock as part of the Keefe Hartley band way back in the dim and distant. Those more knowledgeable would raise more than an eyebrow at that.
Henry’s father taught him to play cornet when he was about 5. His first cornet is very special, not only because it was originally his father’s, but is a Boosey & Co with ‘British throughout’ stamped on the bell. Henry researched the instrument and found that it came out of the factory on 14 April 1912, the day the Titanic sank”.
Henry’s career has been long and illustrious from his initiative work in the sixties through to the present day, his virtuosity allowing him to tour extensively right around the world. Not only has he played with so many well-respected musicians that there is far too little space here to list them all, he is able to move between musical genres at will and with consummate ease.
15th March - Doc K Blues Band
Tim Hill provides harmonica and vocals with long standing member Dave Barnes on slide guitar and vocals (Blues Movie, Mad Dog), lead guitarist Malcolm Hine (S.A.L.T, Brett Marvin, Southside, Blues Twins et al) Mick Parker on drums and Simon Fowle on bass.
Doc K's are the real deal. Arguably one of the finest purveyors of Chicago Blues anywhere in the capital and certainly one of the most popular bands we have the privilege of putting on at the club. Dr K's Bluesband play authentic exciting Blues and rocking R&B and have toured widely in Britain and Europe over many years. Founded by Fairport's Ashley Hutchings in 1967, Dr K's have been stalwarts of the British Blues and R&B scene ever since. Dr K's extensive Family Tree includes Geoff Bradford (Blues By 6, Cyril Davis All Stars) Geoff Krivitt (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) Eric Peachey (East of Eden, Mick Taylor Band), with historical links to many other prominent bands and players.
This is truly an outstanding band that has now played at Marigolds many times. It has been said that they play, ‘quite simply North London’s best Chicago Blues.’ Don’t miss them

JazzUp! AT CLUB 85, 74 Whinbush Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG5 1PZ an independent music venue. Saturday 23rd February JazzUP! presents … RAY GELATO
Those of you who have witnessed Ray Gelato tearing up Club85 need no introduction here. On both occasions, tickets sold out so one piece of advice; get in there quick!
Ray has been taking his special brand of swing, jazz and R&B music all over the world since 1988. This multi-talented singer, saxman, songwriter and band leader has appeared at festivals, clubs and concert stages the world over, from Brazil to New York City. He performs with the highest level of musicianship and has been compared to such greats as Cab Calloway and Louis Prima.
The legendary ‘Godfather of Swing’ has had an illustrious and very successful career to date, including a 14 year Christmas residency at London’s Ronnie Scott’s, always a sell-out. He has also performed for HM The Queen (twice), opened for Robbie Williams at the Albert Hall, and was chosen to play at Sir Paul McCartney’s wedding. A memorable highlight for Ray was performing at New York’s Lincoln Center, fronting an 18 piece big band and wowing the audience at this most esteemed venue. Other notable performances include Umbria Jazz Festival (10 times!), Carnegie Hall New York, Montreal Jazz Festival, and BBC Proms In The Park.
Mr Gelato has 10 albums to his name. The Daily Telegraph gave his last release 5 stars,
stating, “ ,,, ‘this album is a joyous delight.” His music has also been featured in a number of Hollywood movies and TV shows.
Ray comes to Club85 after a residency at The Blue Note Milan, and we are very lucky to have him in Hitchin for one night only. Tickets are expected to sell out, so please do not risk paying on the door, and be sure to secure your tickets early.
Ray is joined on stage by trombonist and JazzUp founder Dave Keech, who was a member of Ray’s band for several years, touring with Ray extensively and appearing on Ray’s classic album ‘The Full Flavour’. The powerhouse rhythm section includes Ray’s regular bassist and pianist, Manuel Alvarez and Gunther Kurmayr, and rising drum star Jack Amblin.

6th March – Al Nicholls Quartet
Al Nicholls - tenor saxophone Paul Eldridge - piano
Manuel Alvarez - double bass Paul Robinson – drums
Top London saxophonist Al Nicholls plays with a ravishing, full rounded sound in the tradition of Coleman Hawkins. From "smoochy" ballads, through to swinging up-tempo numbers, Al’s great sound is perfect in creating that after hours, jazz club atmosphere. His repertoire encompasses literally hundreds of the classic "standards" of the 30s, 40s and 50s, written by masters such as George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Rogers and Hart and Duke Ellington.
13th March – Jeff Hooper Big Band
Jeff Hooper is one of the most talented and best liked singers on the European music scene, and developed his talent as a singer with the famous Syd Lawrence Orchestra, tonight brings his 14 piece big band for the second time to our Club.
Early in his career Jeff worked with Matt Monro (who taught him how to tie a bow tie!), Morecambe and Wise, and Stephane Grappelli. Jeff came second in the Star Search USA show in Hollywood and was then voted one of the top three rising stars in the world by the Frank Sinatra Music Society.
Jeff breathes new life into the music of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat “King” Cole, Vic Damone, Jack Jones, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Matt Monro and Mel Tormé with a relaxed, emotive style. In a music world dominated by cyber-pop and short-lived wonders, Jeff’s enduring quality is a breathtaking voice and sheer magnetism that has survived the changing trends.
This isn’t only because the songs he sings are time-honoured masters in their own right, it’s down to his unique voice, chestnut warm and chocolate rich, classic, certain and reassuring. Jeff likes to give really well presented shows with entertaining dialogue and, combined with his magnificent singing, has made him a popular figure on the music scene. Admission £20 by reservation only
20th March The Rag and Bone Club
Hazel Holder – vocals Stephen Large – piano
Ben Cummings – trumpet Lucy Shaw – double bass
Niall Oates – tenor sax Andy Jones – drums
Dominic Ashworth – guitar
This highly entertaining 7 piece band is fronted by the classy singer Hazel Holder who has West End and Broadway shows under her belt and is currently resident director on the West End musical ‘Dream Girls’. The band is led by pianist Stephen Large who has been musical director for Caro Emerald, Rebecca Ferguson and Duffy as well as having been MD/keyboard player for Paul Heaton/Jackie Abbott, Imelda May, Clare Teal, Martha Reeves and Rod Stewart. He has also taken over Jools Holland’s role as keyboard player in the band Squeeze. Describing themselves enigmatically as ‘itinerant dealers in second-hand soundings and muggled melodiousness!’, The Rag and Bone Club deliver an outstanding performance of musical excellence with a keen reference to the music of the 1930s and 40s swing era. The band is influenced by jazz aristocrats such as Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Ramsey Lewis, Chet Baker and Nat King Cole. They are all experienced musicians having worked with legendary artists including Kenny Ball, The Humphrey Littleton Band, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder as well as playing with The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Pee Wee Ellis and Jamie Cullum. Their album entitled ’Take Away Everything’ features original jazz compositions along with innovative takes on old classics.

Nico Menci on piano, Marco Marzola on bass, Lele Barbieri on drums & Christian Brewer on sax.
A very Dynamic & Unique Cutting-edge Ensemble of Musicians. This is a Power Packed Experience of Emotions & Excitement based on the repertoire of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn.
At the forefront of jazz in Italy Nico Menci is widely regarded as one of the best swinging pianists in Europe. On a brief tour with his trio he is joined by Christian Brewer on sax. Christian is one of the most lyrical and soulful alto players to have emerged from the UK in recent years. Loved for his melodic playing and pure tone, he has risen to prominence on the British jazz scene. He is now a regular at London’s prestigious Ronnie Scots and both he and his band are in great demand. Collectively these musicians have played with a vast array of stars including Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny, Lee Konitz & Scott Hamilton.
Tues 12TH OF MARCH - STEWART CURTIS & THE 'K' GROOVE
The highly entertaining & very humorous Stewart returns with his 'K' Groove. A very big sound & variety of influences are conveyed with superb musicianship, humour & entertaining tales. I have listened to all of Stewart's albums & really enjoyed every one. Stewart Curtis & his ensemble are specialists in eclectic world jazz using influences from Eastern Europe, South America the Middle East & Hertfordshire.
Multi reedman/composer Curtis & his band never fail to provide a source of ear to ear grins & great foot tapping grins…playing such titles as…The Rocking’ Rabbi, The Cuban Cucumber, Thomas the Tango Engine, My Yiddisher Modal plus many more. Stewart will be joined by 5 other taller musicians. With 4 C.d's released on 33 records K-Groove has been one of the leading world Jazz ensembles in the UK for the past 15 years.

Tues 26TH MARCH - THE LIFE & MUSIC OF CHET BAKER
Featuring Sue Richardson on Trumpet, Flugel & vocals, Ted Beament on Piano & Murray Salmon on bass.
This show features trumpet player Chet Baker’s beautiful music, recalling the smoky jazz clubs of 1950s West Coast cool. Chet’s romantic music belied a tragic, heroin-fuelled existence. His intriguing story epitomises that of the classic jazz musician. Running through the fantastic music is a narrative that actress Sylvia Syms helped develop. The story that unfolds engages with all audiences whether jazz fans or not and generates discussions and sparks interest. The show has been a sell-out each time it’s appeared at Ronnie Scott’s.
“I kid you not, you closed your eyes, you were listening to Chet Baker. A remarkable young woman” Richard Wheatley, Jazz FM

Laura B is backed by her fabulous all-star band. Led by Chris Corcoran, who, after some knock out gigs, is no stranger to Marigolds, this exciting six-piece combo rocks its’ riffs, honks its’ horns and swings its’ rhythms."
Mere words are not sufficient to describe what this combo has in store for Marigolds, far better visit Laura’s website where there is a myriad of videos showcasing the bands amazing talents. So, if you like Good Time, Rhythm 'n' Blues, remember She rocks, She rolls, She Swings...She's Dynamite!! So, don’t miss her.
26th April - Nigel Price Quartet: https://www.nigelprice.biz/ & http://www.vasilisx.com/
Nigel Price guitar, Vasilis Xenopoulos sax, Arnie Somogi bass and Sebastian de Krom drums.
Over a career spanning more than 25 years, award winning jazz guitarist Nigel Price has become widely acknowledged as one of the hardest working musicians in the business (56 date tour in late 2016) (over 500 appearances at Ronnie Scott’s). Starting his professional career in his early 20s, Nigel toured Europe with various reggae and funk bands before settling on a solo guitar career and turning his attention to jazz. Citing early influences as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Nigel honed his craft by attending gigs and sitting in with the players of the time. Nigel has played on more than 50 albums including 5 as a leader, spent ten years with acid jazz outfit The Filthy Six, was a member of James Taylor’s band for 3 years (with whom he recorded 5 albums) and performed with the legendary David Axelrod. He has also taught at The International Guitar Foundation at King’s Place, London.
Saxophonist and composer Vasilis Xenopoulos is one of the most accomplished Greek jazz musicians of his generation. London became his permanent home after graduating from the infamous Berklee College of Music, and gradually established himself as one of London’s up and coming jazz saxophonists. He has worked with some of the best musicians in the British jazz scene but far too many to list here, Vasilis has appeared in many guises, as guest soloist, as band leader or as saxophone section leader in jazz venues and jazz festivals throughout the UK but in 2017 Nigel and Vasilis created the XPQ (Xenopoulos/Price Quartet) and recorded their first album under that brand, “Sidekicks" which celebrates some of the most successful guitar/sax pairings in the history of jazz.
