There is a new jazz jam, the only one in Norfolk and probably the best in the eastern counties. Brendan Young, an impressive (and very friendly) bass player leads a unit of outstanding musicians playing excellent, really swinging mainstream and post-bop standards and classics, with any musician invited to do their thing with this great backing. See Brendan's note to existing supporters below .... The band was playing every Monday until last week at the Blueberry in Norwich where, due to a sad change of policy, Brendan and his colleagues had to find a new venue. The Brickmakers (http://www.wix.com/charleyj43/brickmakers#!__about-us) is a great music venue - but as few will know yet about this event in the jazz calendar, do please try to go along (even if you do not play) as we all want to get this off to a powerful start and there is nothing a pub likes more than happy customers .... and I can promise you will be a happy customer. The Brickmakers is a fine venue with very warm staff.

Tuesday 13th December - Liane Carroll. So many superlatives have been used to describe one of the greatest talent's this country has, that it is difficult to add to them. In the 1940's,while Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw were wowing the jazz world with big band swing, the likes of Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow were recording small group jazz on the KING JAZZ record label. They demonstrated that the 1940's feel could be played on a smaller scale. Brian White and Goff Dubber, with a swinging rhythm section of J.J.Vinten, Mike Goodwin, and Colin Miller, have recreated the sounds and feel of this band with warmth and sincerity.25th -Simon Bates & Harry (the piano) Harris in Cabaret . Simon - saxophone, clarinet and flute and Harry on piano. We welcome back to the club Simon & Harry after their highly successful Tribute to Dave Brubeck evening last June with a Cabaret show of a variety of musical styles with a jazzy leaning! Their performance will include some classical film and TV themes. This is a very popular show that has sold out at many venues and festivals. A telepathic understanding of each others playing, stemming from years of drop-of-the-hat improvisations on live television and dozens of theatre performances, means that Simon and Harry can provide anything from the merest whisper of tasteful background music to an exciting cabaret act as featured in several international festivals.

9th December - The Jives - (Marigolds Blues Club) www.thejives.com www.myspace.com/thejivesduo
Jeff Chapman on guitars, vocals, foot stomp and Al E. Bye on harmonicas, jaw harp, percussion. Marigolds Blues club makes no apologies for bringing back yet another great act that performed a great gig last year. The Jives are a traditional, delta blues act from Leigh on Sea in Essex. Jeff and Al have been on the circuit for decades although they did not come together in their current guise until 2005. As the Jives, they have played in blues clubs and festivals all over England and have made numerous European Tours. Their sound is simple, authentic performances of many early blues standards. The Jives play a wealth of blues covers in their own style from the likes of Billy Boy Arnold, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, Mose Allison etc. with the emphasis on high energy Essex R&B. The Jives were voted Digital Blues Award for Best Duo in 2008 and were streets ahead of their closest rivals, polling three times as many votes as the second placed nomination. They have been described as all spit and sawdust meaning that they endeavour to keep the traditional blues alive. They give life, access and meaning to an absolutely vital but historic form and are the closest approximation many of us will get to hearing the real thing played live.
30th December - Jo Fooks - (Marigolds Jazz Club) www.jofooks.com
Jo Fooks on sax, Ted Beament on keyboards, Dave Cliff on guitar, Ed Harison on bass and Buster Birch on Drums. Returning to Marigolds after her New Day specials Jo performs on New Years Eve (well nearly) and now needs no introduction. After recording her debut album "Here and Now!", the legendary British trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton invited Edinburgh born Jo to join his eight-piece band with whom she toured and performed in some of the most amazing theatres and venues in Britain. Humphs fun filled and melodic approach to music was to be a huge influence. Through performing in his band Jo also recorded and worked with Acker Bilk and played alongside Tina May, Joe Temperley, Scott Hamilton, Elkie Brooks, and many others. Jo's other influences include Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gorden, Cannonball Addderley and Bill Evans. Her mellow tone is often compared to Stan getz and Zoot Simms. She currently gigs in and around the London area and her teaching positions have included tutoring the RAF bands men (2000-2006).

Southend Jazz Co-operative needs a bass player! We are a jazz workshop that meets every Saturday morning in St Michaels Church Hall in Leigh-on-Sea from 10 am to 1 pm. There is an average attendance of 20 aspiring jazz players (mostly saxes) with varying experience from beginners to advanced players, but at the very least everybody knows how to follow lead sheets and chords, and jazz etiquette in general, for example playing fours. The focus of the co-op is on the development of improvising skills with an extensive jazz and standards repertoire. The Saturday sessions blend regular tuition with small group playing. A feature of the Co-op are the masterclasses from top professionals, giving the opportunity to play with the great names of British Jazz. Our recent guests have included Andy Cleyndert, Dave Cliff, Alan Barnes, Stan Sulzmann, Steve Waterman and Art Themen. Other sessions are taken by club members.
We have several harmony players, mostly very competent guitarists, and our drummer runs the club, so we always have a full rhythm section - except, now we are looking for a bass player! This is a wonderful opportunity for a bass player to hone skills, learn from the pros, and enjoy a morning's jazz. Please check out the Co-op at the website on www.southendjazzco-op.co.uk. If you are interested give Richard Dray a ring on 01268 781700 for a chat or email him at richar...@ymail.com

For those jazz musicians out there looking to hone their skills there are Thursday night workshops run by John Seeley in Leigh-on-Sea. www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk/Jazz-Workshop.html. All levels welcome, all instruments. At St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF
The aim of the Thursday Night Jazz Workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing. The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level. The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.
