“Larkin
About (Honey & Broken Glass)” featuring Martin Vander Weyer –
Business Editor of the Spectator, Broadcaster, Actor & Playwright -
in an exciting show combining the poetry and prose of Phillip Larkin
with John Petters and his Hot Jazz @ The ARC, (St John’s Arts Centre, St
John’s Walk, Market St, Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ) on Thursday 29th June @ 8PM – adm: £10 – details: 01406 365 731 – tjp...@traditional-jazz.com www.traditional-jazz.com
Philip Larkin (1922-1985), a major literary figure of the 20th
century, was offered the position of Poet Laureate, but declined. He
also turned down an OBE. Many of Larkin’s poems have jazz as a
backdrop, including “For Sidney Bechet”, in honour of the great New
Orleans soprano saxophonist. For many years he wrote a monthly jazz
review column in the Daily Telegraph, which found him deeply critical of
the modern jazz of the era. To Larkin, jazz was the music of Louis
Armstrong, Bechet and Bix Beiderbecke. He deplored such modernists as
Miles Davis and John Coltrane, agreeing with the sentiments of Chicago
guitarist, Eddie Condon, who asked, “As it enters the ear, does it come
in like broken glass or does it come in like honey?” Larkin’s collected
reviews were published in the best-selling book, “All What Jazz”, which
provides much of the source material for the music in this show. "I
can live a week without poetry," Philip Larkin said in 1965, "but not a
day without jazz."
Former Harlow drummin’ man, John Petters and his
Hot Jazz will feature Essex clarinetist, Tim Huskisson, piano professor,
Martin Litton and Harlow’s bass ace, Keith Donald. Admission £10.

Tuesday, 27th June THAT FREE FLOW SWING THING featuring Al Nicholls, tenor sax. and Jeff Williams, trombone who bring that wonderful swing era of the 40’s and 50’s produced by Ellington, Basie and Dorsey bands.
Al Nicholls
is just one of countless jazz musicians who graduated from Leeds
College of Music and for twenty or more years made endless appearances
across the world. Al’s style is similar to that free flow sound of
Illinois Jacquet and Charlie Ventura having developed that laid back
effortless style. He currently leads the swing band ‘Blue Harlem’ and is
a regular sideman of T.J.Johnson’s band
Jeff Williams has
a playing style, full of spirit, exuberance and inventiveness from the
collaboration with Al Nicholls over a score or more years. He recalls
how they first met, in a pub! now that’s no surprise for a musician.
Jeff currently leads the ‘Mississipi Swamp Dogs’ a blues sextet of New
Orleans origins performing in such notable London venues as Ronnie
Scotts, Bulls Head and Boisdales.
Tuesday, 25th July STRINGS & SONGBIRD featuring Mike Sagrott, guitar and Sharon Scott, vocals, accompanied by the resident trio, will be recalling her favourite tunes.
Mike Sagrott
began strumming a guitar in his teens that inevitably led him into rock
and blues sounds until he bought a Wes Montgomery LP by mistake! A
long journey ensued into his discovery of jazz as he learnt with local
bands. Suddenly family business commitments took over his life which
lasted for almost thirty years until his retirement when he began
picking up the threads once again and plays with the Kenny Baxter
Quintet and co-leads his own group Timeline.
Sharon Scott,
a frequent visitor to the Club is a rare breed of singer particularly
with ballads, that may have come from singing in the church since the
age of three in her home town of Glasgow. By 1986 she became domiciled
in the South with music remaining her greatest love and singing at every
opportunity in recalling her favourite female vocalists, from the hits
of Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne and Sassy Sarah
Vaughan.
Tuesday, 29th August HORNS OUT FRONT featuring the multi-instrumentalist, Paul Higgs, trumpet, and Kevin Mcmahon, tenor sax, a very smooth musician, both of whom will be Horns Out Front accompanied by the resident trio.
Paul Higgs,
a frequent visitor to the Club continues to perform at the highest
level blending classical and jazz styles with simple ease. His CD ‘Pavanne’ reached
No.1 in One World Charts. His recent collaboration with the Chris
Ingram Quartet on the crafted biography of Hoagy Carmichael created CD’s
‘Hoagy’ and ‘Dudley’ highlighting the delightful music of Dudley Moore is bringing great acclaim. Paul’s own show titled ‘A Brief History of Jazz’ is a fantastic tour of jazz history as recorded by past trumpeters.
Kevin Mcmahon
hails from Dublin, in the emerald isles and currently leads his group
‘Swing Odyssey’ and plays at top London venues. His influences have been
the great tenor players of Stan Getz, Lester Young and Dexter Gordon
with a sound that veers between mainstream to swing with ballads and
blues. He has recorded three of CD’s with ‘Sometimes I’m Happy’,
’Stardust’ and his latest ‘Your Choice’. Welcome back Kevin with those
ballads and blues reflecting classic looks and taste.
Tuesday, 26th September SINATRA’S SONGBOOK featuring John Withers, vibraphone, accompanying Paul Wood, vocals, through the vast songbook of Frank Sinatra with which Paul entertained for many years on cruises with his ‘Salute to Sinatra’ tour.
John Withers,
a self taught percussionist at home with either drums or vibraphone has
played with a number of big bands as well as a host of celebrities. He
always entertains, so is it little wonder he is in constant demand
gigging around jazz clubs with his eclectic choice of music. Tonight his
programme will centre around Sinatra’s Songbook.
Paul Wood,
found singing came naturally, soon entertaining publicly at every
opportunity. He is a well respected in demand vocalist with his own
particular approach to a song whether a delicate ballad or rhythmic
swing tune that not many are able to match. He has travelled extensively
in Europe and North America appearing with many big bands such as Glenn
Miller Memorial Orchestra, Syd Lawrence Orchestra and James Last to
name but a few. Listen to him croon his way through the Sinatra Songbook
with ease and that cheeky little smile.
ANNIE'S JAZZ @ THORPE BAY GOLF CLUB. Annie's Jazz is at Thorpe Hall Golf Club, Thorpe Hall Avenue. Thorpe Bay. Southend-on-Sea. SS1-3AT on Tuesdays. Food served from 7pm until 8pm and the music will start at 8.00pm. Please phone Annie for reservations 07504-232783 or e-mail boneswi...@gmail.com.

16th June - The Eric Ranzoni Trio: http://www.ericranzoni.co.uk
From
North London the much acclaimed Eric Ranzoni brings his Trio to
Marigolds after previous knockout gigs. Renowned on the London Blues
scene, including a residency at Boisdales in Belgravia.
Since
returning to London in 2003, Eric has earned a reputation as an
exceptional and versatile pianist, with a warm singing voice and a knack
to entertain. Solo or accompanied by excellent musicians, he’s played
the Blues (and Roots music in general) in many top venues in London and
about, with frequent stints abroad. In great demand as Blues pianist
with several London-based bands, he played the piano on the UK and
European tour of Mud Morganfield, Muddy Waters eldest son, along with
Big Joe Louis and West Weston.
In Mud's band he's appeared on 'Later
with Jools Holland' on BBC TV and played major Blues Festivals
alongside artists like Sting, John Mayall, Herbie Hancock, Santana, Jack
Bruce, Van Morrison... Eric's has played with Ray Cooper (Elton John
and Eric Clapton percussionist), Jools Holland, Otis Grand, Buddy
Whittington, Charlie Musselwhite, Big Joe Louis, Bill Hurley (The
Inmates), UK top band the Cadillac Kings, Chas Hodges (Chas & Dave),
boogie woogie stars Ben Waters & Axel Zwingenberger etc
30th June - Gilad Atzmon ‘A Tribute to John Coltrane’: http://www.gilad.co.uk/
Gilad Atzmon sax, Frank Harrison keyboards, Yaron Stavi bass and Enzo Zirilli drums.
Gilad, born in Israel in 1963 and trained at the Rubin Academy of
Music, Jerusalem is a multi-instrumentalist playing sax, clarinet and
ethnic woodwind instruments. His album Exile won BBC jazz album of the
year in 2003. Touring extensively around the world Gilad has been
described as the “hardest-gigging man in British jazz.” His albums,
numbering 15 to date, often explore political themes and the music of
the Middle East.
As a member of the Blockheads, Gilad has also
recorded and performed with Ian Dury, Robbie Williams, Sinead O'Connor
and Paul McCartney. Gilad has also recorded with Robert Wyatt, the Water
Boys. In 2014 he recorded with Pink Floyd and is featured on their last
album The Endless River (Anisina).
In 2000 Gilad founded the Orient
House Ensemble in London and started re-defining his own roots in the
light of his emerging ethical awareness. The Ensemble includes Chris
Higginbottom on Drums, Yaron Stavi on Bass and Frank Harrison on piano
& electronics.
Over the years Gilad's music has moved
increasingly toward a cultural hybrid. As a bandleader and reed player
he has been amazing his listeners with his powerful personal style that
combines great bebop artistry and Middle-Eastern roots in a
sophisticated, sometimes ironical manner. Influenced by Coltrane’s
powerful approach on the sax, Gilad's live performances are simply
breath-taking and overwhelming.
His work is highly praised by the
musical press; a formidable improvisational array; a jazz giant steadily
drawing himself up to his full height; it's striking how similar
Gilad's sweet, open-throated sound is to Parker's; the best musician
living in the world today.
14th July - Doc K Blues Band
Tim
Hill provides harmonica and vocals with long standing member Dave
Barnes on slide guitar and vocals (Blues Movie, Mad Dog), lead guitarist
Malcolm Hine (S.A.L.T, Brett Marvin, Southside, Blues Twins et al) Mick
Parker on drums and Simon Powe on bass.
Doc K's are the real deal.
Arguably one of the finest purveyors of Chicago Blues anywhere in the
capital and certainly one of the most popular bands we have the
privilege of putting on. Dr K's Bluesband play authentic exciting Blues
and rocking R&B and have toured widely in Britain and Europe over
many years.
Founded by Fairport's Ashley Hutchings in 1967, Dr K's
have been stalwarts of the British Blues and R&B scene ever since.
Dr K's extensive Family Tree includes Geoff Bradford (Blues By 6, Cyril
Davis All Stars) Geoff Krivitt ( John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) Eric
Peachey ( East of Eden, Mick Taylor Band), with historical links to many
other prominent players.
This is truly an outstanding band. It has
been said that they play, ‘quite simply North London’s best Chicago
Blues.’ Don’t miss them
28th July - Trudy Kerr and the Brian Dee Trio: www.trudykerr.com
Trudy
Kerr is renowned as one of the UK's finest jazz vocalists. Mojo
Magazine says of her singing "Trudy Kerr is the genuine article - She is
a Joy!" All About Jazz has described her as "100% real jazz musician
with fluid phrasing and a mellifluous, warm and sensuous tone."
Born
in Australia, Trudy moved to the UK in the early 1990's to pursue a
career in Jazz. She got her big break when Ronnie Scott asked her to
perform at his Club. She has performed at many major venues and
festivals in the UK as well as engagements in Europe, her homeland
Australia and the Far East.
Trudy has released ten albums on the
Jazzizit Record Label and has collaborated both live and in the studio
with world class musicians including Mulgrew Miller, Jan Lundgren,
Georgie Fame, Bob Dorough, Michael Garrick, Acker Bilk, Jamie Cullum,
Geoff Gascoyne (her husband), Tom Cawley, Seb de Krom, Jim Mullen plus
many more.
To mark her extensive discography reaching double
figures, Jazzizit Records have issued to a Trudy Kerr Compilation called
Contemplation.
11th August - Jimmy C and the Blues Dragons: http://www.bluesdragons.com
Canadian-born
singer, guitarist Jimmy C moved to Britain via Vancouver, San Francisco
and Japan since when Jimmy and the band are earning a deserved
reputation as one of the most entertaining and hard-working bands on the
London circuit.
Playing a repertoire which includes blues classics
from Robert Johnson and T-bone Walker, various Kings of the blues, that
is Albert, Freddie and BB, they follow through to the music which the
British Blues Invasion of North America left in its wake, from the
Rolling Stones to Cream, from Jimi Hendrix to the Doors and even
Steppenwolf They freely admit they are not blues purists but as they
point out neither were the blues greats - their mission is to do what
Muddy Waters did, and what Rufus Thomas did, to entertain and get you
dancing.
25th August - The Humphrey Lyttleton Band
Tony
Fisher trumpet, Jimmy Hastings alto sax, clarinet & flute, Robert
Fowler tenor sax, baritone sax & clarinet, Ray Wordsworth trombone,
Adrian Macintosh drums, Ted Beament piano and John Rees-Jones bass.
In January 2008, Humphrey Lyttelton celebrated sixty years as a
bandleader, leading a band which he ranked as one of the very best of
his career. It's hallmark is versatility, reflected in a repertoire
which extends from early traditional to modern by way of Ellington and
Basie.
Members of the late Humphrey Lyttelton's
band continue to fly the flag. The band is now joined by trumpeter Tony
Fisher who joined after Humph's death in 2008. The hallmark of the band
is versatility, reflected in a repertoire which extends from early
traditional to modern. Not to be forgotten are Humph's own compositions,
of which he had recorded well over two hundred, including Bad Penny
Blues, so it's little surprise that the prevailing reaction from
audiences is 'We never thought a jazz concert could have such variety'.

The
E17 Large Ensemble are a 13-piece contemporary jazz group comprising

as the flagship ensemble of the E17 collective, one of the most
significant music collectives to emerge in recent years. All members are
respected bandleaders in their own right, and many have contributed
their own original compositions to the group. Many of the musicians have
collaborated with a huge range of established European jazz artists,
including Tim Garland, Han Bennink, Andy Sheppard, Ivo Neame
(Phronesis), Jamie Cullum, Django Bates, Zoe Rahman, Gwilym Simcock,
Gwyneth Herbert and many others.
The Ensemble curated the first
Walthamstow Jazz Festival in 2009 and commissioned a new work by
respected composer and pianist Liam Noble with financial assistance from
Arts Council England. It promotes ambitious and forward-thinking

Expect a night full of funky, surprising and familiar tunes.

Jazz in some form has been heard in Britain since 1880! But there's never been a flagship centre in the UK. To rectify this Digby Fairweather and six Trustees planned a project to create ‘The Jazz Centre UK’. On Jun 2nd 2016 TJCUK was registered as a Charitable Organization and has since signed a ten-year Service Level Agreement with Southend Borough Council to develop the project. The JCUK opened its first department on February 6th 2016 in Southend’s Beecroft Art Gallery. Its collections (so far) include a research facility of books and journals; a small museum and an extensive library of jazz on film. The department enjoys full internet facilities for extended research and also celebrates the music with film presentations in our 110-seat cinema and an informal jazz cafe for visitors, with longer-term ambitions.
‘The Jazz Centre (UK)’ will be opening its very own Jazz Cafe to celebrate the Village Green Festival on Saturday 8 July 2017. Hosted inside Chalkwell Hall, Chalkwell Ave, Southend-on-Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea SS0 8NB – the beautiful Georgian house at the heart of the Festival site – the Cafe will be bringing you live jazz all day as well as a fantastic exhibition of jazz memorabilia from the Centre’s collections. The exhibition will open at 11am and be on view to visitors for the following eight weeks. Full details next week.
The Jazz Centre [UK] Movies at the Beecroft Art Gallery 2pm Entrance free
Saturday June 3rd - High Society This remake of ‘The Philadelphia Story’ into a star-studded technicolor musical with Cole Porter tunes works splendidly and remains an underrated gem. Starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and jazz great Louis Armstrong, the Cole Porter score, and lyrical content is delivered memorably by the charismatic performers.
Saturday June 10th - Brownie Speaks A native of Wilmington, Delaware, jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown made an outstanding and influential contribution to music. He was killed in a car accident at the age of 25. This feature-length documentary presents a richly detailed account of Brown’s life, and examines his historical importance in the context of three criteria–innovation, influence, and individuality.
Saturday June 17th - Duke Ellington: The Classic Hollywood Years Different films of the Duke and his orchestra, including assorted musical sequences from motion pictures. Duke’s debut in the short “Black and Tan”. The short “A Bundle of Blues” with a lenghty rendition of “Stormy Weather” that starred Ivie Anderson. “Symphony in black: A rhapsody of Negro life” with Billie Holiday. And much more.

The exhibition will open at 11am and be on view for the following eight weeks. Our exhibition – drawn from the collections of ‘The Jazz Centre UK’ - will bring to life legendary jazz players, venues and music in and beyond the UK via unseen photographs, rare posters, vinyl record-sleeves, journals (from l926 to the present), exciting memorabilia and the instruments of celebrated jazz performers.

12.00-12.45: The DOMINIC ASHWORTH DUO
Poll winning guitarist Dominic established a national reputation as a classical guitarist in his homeland Canada before moving to Britain in the l990s. Thereafter he has worked and recorded prolifically both as a soloist and with Carol Kidd, Michael Garrick’s Orchestra, clarinettist Julian Marc Stringle’s ‘Dream Band’ Derek Nash’s ‘Picante’ and Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen. A hugely talented and multi-stylistic guitarist his style encompasses everyone from Eddie Lang to Jimi Hendrix and with world-class bassist ROGER CURPHEY he also supplies the rhythm section for our visiting stars!
1.15-2.30: STEVE FISHWICK (trumpet)
The essence of cool! Since winning the ‘Rising star’ British Jazz Award in 2002 Steve has now gained global recognition as a soloist. His latest album ‘In the Empire State’ recorded in New York (where else?) in 2016 achieved five-star reviews and American trumpet icon Wynton Marsalis has said of Steve: ‘I can’t think of another trumpeter who can do what he does!’. The supreme compliment!
3.15-4.00 KAREN SHARP (tenor)
Karen’s career began with the legendary Humphrey Lyttelton band from 2000-2004 and since then she has recorded numerous solo albums as well as leading her own poll winning quartet with pianist Nikki Iles, bassist Dave Green and drummer Steve Brown. Karen has also starred at international jazz festivals including Tokyo, Singapore and Cape Town and toured with American equals including tenorist Harry Allen and premier cornetist Warren Vache.
4.45-5.30: MICK FOSTER (Saxophones)
Mick’s formidable CV includes everyone from The London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra to Dame Cleo Laine, Jacqui Dankworth and ‘Swing Out Sister’. As a respected composer his music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3; as an educator he teaches jazz at Trinity Laban and Guildhall School of Music and Drama and you may also have spotted him in recent editions of ‘Downton Abbey’! Jazz critic Art Napoleon dubs Mick: ’The greatest all-round saxophonist in the UK’.
6.00-6.45 (ish): CLARE FOSTER (vocal) / SHANTI JAYASINHA (trumpet)
Clare has arrived in Southend via New Orleans, New York and London and her cool-voiced interpretation of standards (and the art of ‘Vocalese’ which adds words to classic jazz solos) will be enhanced by the trumpet and flugelhorn of Shanti who has played with the Brand New Heavies, Mike Westbrook’s Orchestra and John Mayer’s ground-breaking ‘Indo-Jazz Fusions’. A great way to end the day!

The rich, jazz infused repertoire explores timeless classics penned by the legendary musical storytellers of the last 100 years, and celebrates giants of the Great American and British Songbooks through to the work of more contemporary writers plus Clare’s own original compositions. The eclectic song list will include music from Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn, Rodgers and Hammerstein, honouring the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson and Peggy Lee. Headline acts announced for Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival’s tenth anniversary.
The Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival are delighted to announce headlining performances with swinging jazz from Claire Martin OBE and Ray Gelato, and powerful blues from Northern Ireland’s star, Kaz Hawkins. To be held at Burton Agnes Hall, Driffield, YO25 4NB from 30th June – July 2nd 2017 www.burtonagnes.com
‘They say that good things come in small packages. This may be one of the summer's smallest gatherings, but it's also one of the most sophisticated...' Daily Mail
The festival is uniquely set in one of the UK’s finest Elizabethan stately piles, Burton Agnes Hall, home to the saxophone playing organiser, Simon Cunliffe-Lister. Over twenty five bands provide a weekend of jazz and blues on manicured lawns, and in the ornately carved Great Hall. Civilised camping with hot showers in the adjacent park field, children’s entertainers, and local ale and food inspired The Independent to describe the Festival as ‘Possibly the most enjoyable jazz concert I've ever attended’.
‘Now this is a proper music festival’ The Times
One of The Daily Telegraph's best fifteen festivals for the over 50s.
“This
is a very English festival, with a wonderful laid-back
atmosphere…superbly organised and efficiently run, which brought
together such a wide range of musical styles across a successful
weekend…Yes, this is a wonderful English festival.” Fatea Magazine
“Who
could have imagined such an idyllic and sublime location for a Jazz and
Blues Festival.. .thankfully somebody did…This unique venue and event
is a must attend festival….make sure you get your tickets...I guarantee
you won’t be disappointed.” Yorkshire Gig Guide

The
E17 Large Ensemble are a 13-piece contemporary jazz group comprising
five saxes, three trumpets, voice, guitar, piano and bass, on the
forefront of the UK contemporary jazz scene. It was formed ten years ago
as the flagship ensemble of the E17 collective, one of the most
significant music collectives to emerge in recent years.

Weds 28th June – JUSTIN THURGUR’S AFRO-JAZZ PROJECT
Trombonist
for Bellowhead, Lokkhi Terra and Dele Sosimi’s Afro-Beat Orchestra,
promotes his debut Afro-Jazz album ‘No Confusion’. JUSTIN
THURGUR trombone, GRAEME FLOWERS trumpet, KISHON KHAN
piano/Rhodes/organ, SUMAN JOSHI double bass, ORESTE NODA congas &
TANSAY OMAR drums - Justin Thurgur is most known as the
trombonist from the seminal folk group Bellowhead, for over twenty years
he has also been at the heart of the world music scene in Britain,
particularly as the right hand man of former Fela and Femi Kuti
keyboardist Dele Sosimi and with his long term collaboration with Kishon
Khan. A defining feature of Thurgur’s career has been a commitment to
sharing and shared musical communication, breaking down borders and
creating music that celebrates commonality.
‘No Confusion’ is
Thurgur’s first release under his name and is a true representation of
this ideal. It combines his early love for the jazz of Miles Davis,
Wayne Shorter, Coltrane, Lee Morgan, et al with his own musical
journey. That journey has seen Thurgur working with the cream of the
world music community both in London and further afield, alongside his
work with Sosimi and Khan, Thurgur has worked with the likes of Tony
Allen, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express project, Giraldo Piloto, Julito
Padron, Changuito, Tony Kofi, Bukky Leo, Wara, Osvaldo Chacon, Baby
Akhtar, Rob Fakir, The Selecter and The Levellers. “Border breaking communication.......deftly celebrates our commonality.” 4/5 – Jane Cornwell, Evening Standard
