John Etheridge guitar, Pete Whittaker organ and Mark Fletcher drums.  John enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as, "One of the best guitarists in the world", sentiments echoed by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.  A prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as 'eclectic'. His range is illustrated by his years of touring and recording with  Stephane Grappelli while doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine. John is equally at home on acoustic and electric guitar and his willingness to engage with so many styles is matched by his ability to excel in any of them.  He has played with John Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Herb Ellis, Mundell Lowe, Nigel Kennedy, Pat Metheny, Birelli Lagrene, Barney Kessel, Vic Juris and countless others.

They take you on a journey, from southern juke-joints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance.....

Friday 7 August   ROBERT HABERMANN SINGS GERSHWIN

ROBERT HABERMANN ~ Vocals   TREVOR BROWN ~ Piano
Robert Habermann is an accomplished singer/songwriter of The Great American and British Songbooks. He worked in the US where he was voted Best International Performer 1994 by the prestigious Manhattan Association of Cabarets of New York, resulting in several major tours. He was the first major British singer to perform a concert to celebrate Frank Sinatra's 80th Birthday at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1995 which toured the UK with great success.
Trevor Brown is known for his versatility and virtuosity. He was born in Ramsgate in 1947 and by eight was playing accordion in summer season variety shows in the Thanet area. In 1966 he moved to London to study chemistry at University College but at weekends was playing in dance bands and writing music arrangements for various cabaret artistes. He joined the Victor Silvester Orchestra in 1972 and was subsequently part of Bob Miller's band "The Millermen", and spent twenty years as pianist with the Joe Loss Orchestra. Trevor now enjoys being part of The Syd Lawrence Orchestra.

Friday 21 August  BASIL HODGE QUINTET: CELEBRATING HORACE SILVER

Pianist Basil Hodge and his band pay homage to the influential American jazz piano player, composer and hard bop pioneer, Horace Silver, who died last year, aged 85. BASIL HODGE ~ Piano   TONY KOFI ~ Saxes   QUENTIN COLLINS ~ Trumpet
LARRY BARTLEY ~ Bass   ROD YOUNGS ~ Drums
Basil Hodge's professional career started in the summer of 1993 as a freelance musician and leading his piano trio. He rose up the ranks to play with some of the leading UK players such as Jim Mullen, Dave O'Higgins, Pete Wareham and Renato D'Aiello. Basil's hard swinging, bop-tinged piano perfectly captures Silver's sound.
Nottingham born Reedman Tony Kofi spent four years at Berklee college of music in Boston USA. He returned to the UK in 1991 and joined the Jazz Warriors. Best instrumentalist at the 2008 BBC Jazz awards, best Ensemble at the 2005 Parliamentary Jazz Awards are just two of the many awards he has won.
Quentin Collins has established himself as one of Europe's top up-and-coming Jazz trumpeters.
Larry Bartley was an experienced electric bassist in his mid-20s, but the double bass became more and more of an obsession and he now enjoys a big reputation on the British jazz scene.
Originally from Washington DC, drummer/composer Rod Youngs completes the ensemble - one of the most expressive and adept musicians in the music arena today.

They take you on a journey, from southern juke-joints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance.....

11th September - Giles Hedley and the Aviatorshttp://www.gileshedley.com

Giles has been singing and playing blues across UK and Europe since the 60s, on bottleneck and lap steel guitars, acoustic and electric, and his trademark simultaneous nose-and-mouth harmonica playing.  Critics and audiences alike are drawn into the blues the band displays whether joyous, ribald or sad. Their stunning musicianship conveys the emotion of the blues whilst avoiding technique for its own sake!  Giles is a regular on UK and Europe’s blues festival and club circuits, both solo and with the band featuring repeatedly on national radio in England and France. He is, in the words of Blues in Britain, "a mainstay of British blues" or as Blues Matters puts it, "one of UK’s foremost roots and country blues performers".

The Aviators is a funky roots-blues outfit steeped in early Chicago blues. Earthy slide and steel guitars, blistering lead guitar, a passionate, Howlin' Wolf-style voice, adventurous bass and drums right up in the mix giving that unmistakeable Aviators sound, quite unlike other British blues bands.

25th September - Art Themen Quartet with Simon Spillett

Art Theman saxophone, Simon Spillett saxophone, Ted Beament piano, bass and drums.

A self-taught musician, Art played tenor sax at Cambridge while studying medicine. Qualifying as a doctor he played in blues and R&B bands in the early 60s as well as backing groups for numerous pop sessions.  Art worked with Alexis Korner, Phil Seamen, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Long John Baldry. In the late 60s/early 70s Art started to favour jazz. He played with Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier and began a long and fruitful association with Stan Tracey, which continued into the 90s. Art has accompanied many visiting US jazzmen too many to list here.

Had Art chosen a musical career he would have doubtless been an international artist of some stature. Attaining his high standing in jazz while working as a consultant surgeon, is testimony to his remarkable gifts.  Described by the late Humphrey Lyttelton as "formidable," Simon Spillett is a British jazz saxophonist who has won many awards. As well as playing in his own quartet Simon has played with many celebrated jazz leaders and bands and has recorded several albums, all receiving highly favourable reviews. Festival, concert and club appearances include sold-out gigs at Ronnie Scott's and the Brecon Jazz Festival and he has broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Jazz-Line Up with his own band.

Simon has worked as a writer, penning the definitive biography of jazz legend Tubby Hayes (The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant), articles for magazines including Jazz Journal and Record Collector. Acting as a consultant for a number of jazz record labels he has written booklet essays for over seventy albums.

Ted Beament on piano is no stranger to Marigolds and his repeat appearances are testament to his very fine piano playing.

First, to remind you about my umpteenth weekend of Hot Jazz, Cabaret and Swing (October 23rd, 24th, and 25th) at South Downs Holiday Village near Chichester. Booking Hotline - 01243 216833.  The weekend includes the UK’s premier boogie-woogie and stride pianist, Neville Dickie and his Rhythmakers (featuring Alan Gresty, Goff Dubber and Geoff Cole); ‘A Fine Romance’ with Louise Cookman, myself and the Jim Barry Quintet and the world premier of the Tony Jacobs Big Band with guest Catherine Sykes. As this is Sinatra’s centenary year, there will be a bit of a nod to the great man throughout the weekend including some the great arrangements of Billy May, Neil Hefti and Nelson Riddle.
And, of course, Jim and I will be presenting our pre-lunch cabaret spot.

Now, while on the subject of Sinatra (News Flash) this Friday evening, August 7th, the great John Wilson Orchestra will be appearing at the Proms presenting their celebration of Frank Sinatra. But the main attraction is his special guest the wonderful jazz singer Claire Martin.
I'll be on the road, schlepping up to Harrogate for my Bing Crosby show but I'll be setting the video recorder for the event.
