We’re looking forward to it!”

Paul Higgs, needs no introduction being a regular visitor to the Club in a variety of guises that this multi-instrumentalist performs across the country. He tours with the fantastic Chris Ingham Quartet with the brilliant musical biographies of, ‘Hoagy’ and ‘Dudley’ portraying the lives and music of the legends Carmichael and Moore both of which are receiving critical acclaim wherever they appear. His own shows, should definitely not be missed, include, ‘A Brief History of Jazz’, ‘Shades of Miles’, ‘Quintessential’, ‘Mancini Magic’ and ‘Pavane’. Collaborating with Catherine in recent years, he produced her first CD ‘Stories & Lies, and will be accompanying and embellishing her voice tonight with the trumpet skills of an outstanding master musician.

Tuesday, 26th February, 2019

THE GREAT GUITARS REVISITED, featuring the three guitars of DOMINIC ASHWORTH, ANDY WATSON and SIMON HURLEY with resident trio of Hilary Cameron, keys, Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.

INTRO -  Not one, not two but three amazingly talented guitarists, will tonight bring you a musical story on jazz from the 70’s and 80’s when three American guitarists joined forces and became known as The Great Guitars. They were, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd who left a lasting legacy of guitar styles that even remains innovative today. They covered a wide range of styles and genres as you will hear when our guests revisit their music and I am sure it will make you want to listen to The Great Guitars again and again.

Dominic Ashworth, an exceptionally talented Canadian guitarist, and regular guest to the Club, for which we are extremely lucky as his services are in great demand country wide touring with groups such as, Picante Latin Band, Rag & Bone Club, The Dream Band and accompanies many other jazz musicians. No matter the tempo, genre, style, Dominic ticks all the boxes ensuring his audience are always wanting more from this truly amazing musician.
Andy Watson graduated at City of Leeds College of Music, where so many of our jazz musicians studied. Andy has been a professional musician for the whole of his working life as a player and educator. Performing as a solo artist he has travelled extensively, appearing at many venues and festivals. His teaching work is in schools and colleges as both guitar teacher and lecturer and directs many workshops around the UK.
Simon Hurley picked up the guitar 25 years ago and, and having been self-taught, embarked upon a formal musical education in 2006. In 2010 he graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree at Colchester and began to study jazz under the tutelage of guitarist Andy Watson. He is inspired by Joe Pass and Martin Taylor, who has described his playing as ‘Just beautiful’. Simon divides his time between teaching, recording, accompanying and performing in and around S. E. England.

Tuesday, 26th March, 2019

An EVENING with ELLA and LOUIS featuring HILARY CAMERON, keys/vocals, and PAUL HIGGS, trumpet, with resident duo of Ted Simkins, bass and Dave Grant, kit.

Hilary Cameron trained originally as a classical pianist but later decided to spend two years in New York studying jazz at the Manhattan School of Music. Whilst there the opportunity arose for her to gain invaluable experience performing in Clubs and venues with a host of experienced musicians playing the New York circuit. Hilary is also an excellent jazz flautist and vocalist that not many people are aware of. On returning to London she was soon performing at Ronnie Scotts, Pizza on the Park and the Purcell Room on London’s South Bank along with festivals in London, Brecon and Birmingham before joining OB’s resident trio.
Paul Higgs, needs no introduction being a regular visitor, almost a season ticket holder, in a variety of guises that this multi-instrumentalist performs across the country. Apart from touring with the fantastic Chris Ingham Quartet he has a very busy schedule with his own one man shows of ‘A Brief History of Jazz’, ‘Shades of Miles’, ‘Quintessential’ and ‘Pavane’ the latter being on his CD, a collection of original compositions that takes you on a mystic musical journey. Tonight, Paul accompanies Hilary, in portraying the wonderful music of the duets between Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong who sang such brilliant tunes as, ‘Summertime’, ‘Nearness of You’. ‘Cheek to Cheek’. ‘Tenderly’ and ‘Moonlight in Vermont’.

Sit back and enjoy the artistry.

11th January- Jimmy C and the Blues Dragons: http://www.bluesdragons.com

Canadian - born singer, guitarist Jimmy C moved to Britain via Vancouver, San Francisco and Japan since when Jimmy and the band are earning a deserved reputation as one of the most entertaining and hard-working bands on the London circuit.

Playing a repertoire which includes blues classics from Robert Johnson and T-bone Walker, various Kings of the blues, that is Albert, Freddie and BB, they follow through to the music which the British Blues Invasion of North America left in its wake, from the Rolling Stones to Cream, from Jimi Hendrix to the Doors and even Steppenwolf They freely admit they are not blues purists but as they point out neither were the blues greats - their mission is to do what Muddy Waters did, and what Rufus Thomas did, to entertain and get you dancing.

Jimmy C & The Blues Dragons play sharp snappy blues, with a little bit of edge and an element of fun and clearly enjoy what they do and seem able to communicate this to their audience…. Pete Feenstra

25th January - Atila  http://www.atila.uk/

Atila vocals, Graham Harvey keyboards, Dario Di Lecce bass and Steve Brown drums

Atila Huseyin is an established UK Jazz singer. Sartorially stylish and musically classy, his interpretations of the American Songbook are internationally renowned, taking influence from early Frank Sinatra.

Atila began music professionally aged 15 with local big band ‘Young Jazz’. First playing saxophone, but then switching to vocals. In 2002 Atila was invited to feature with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra with whom he toured extensively as well as recording.

Further tours followed with various artists most notably with the legendary Buddy Greco highlighting with an appearance with the BBC Big Band at the 30th Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, broadcast on BBC Radio 2 Big Band Special and four nights at Ronnie Scott’s in London in 2008. In 2013 Atila was invited to perform with Buddy Greco for his 70th Anniversary Celebration.

Numerous tours and recording sessions followed in diverse formats and artists including trips to the States. Atila has performed live on the Alan Titchmarsh Television Show on ITV in 2010 and on ITV show Stepping Out, in 2013. He has also recorded advertisements for many international companies including the Emirates 2012 as well as long running residencies at the Park Plaza hotel and the Arts Club Dover Street.

8th February - Gentleman and the Contenders: www.gentlemantim.com

Returning to Marigolds after some sensational gigs the bands influences remain deeply rooted in early 50’s style Swing,West Coast and Chicago Blues and they are one of the hottest bands on the scene today.  Led by the inspirational harmonica player and vocalist Tim Corbett they deliver a brand of high energy jumpin’ blues that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get your toes tappin’.  Tim Corbett is much admired by audiences and his peers alike and is recognised for his technical mastery of the harmonica and his powerful vocal performance.

TJ Cadman is a stylish guitar master that gets to the very heart of the music with his irresistible style, slick solo's and sophisticated chord patterns.

With Nick Vaughan on drums and Mike Reeman on double bass their swinging rhythms and lazy shuffles combined with great dynamics create the band’s musical style and it’s unique Chicago Style sound.

22nd February - Art Theman & Henry Lowther Quintet

Art Theman sax, Henry Lowther trumpet, Mike Gorman keyboards, Flo Moore bass and Stu Butterfield drums.

A self-taught musician, Art played tenor sax at Cambridge while studying medicine. Qualifying as a doctor he played in blues and R&B bands in the early 60s as well as backing groups for numerous pop sessions.

Art worked with Alexis Korner, Phil Seamen, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Long John Baldry. In the late 60s/early 70s Art started to favour jazz. He played with Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier and began a long and fruitful association with Stan Tracey, which continued into the 90s. Art has accompanied many visiting US jazzmen too many to list here.

Had Art chosen a musical career he would have doubtless been an international artist of some stature. Attaining his high standing while working as a consultant surgeon, is testimony to his remarkable talents.

A wit might say that Henry’s career peaked when he played at Woodstock as part of the Keefe Hartley band way back in the dim and distant. Those more knowledgeable would raise more than an eyebrow at that.

Henry’s father taught him to play cornet when he was about 5. His first cornet is very special, not only because it was originally his father’s, but is a Boosey & Co with ‘British throughout’ stamped on the bell. Henry researched the instrument and found that it came out of the factory on 14 April 1912, the day the Titanic sank”.

Henry’s career has been long and illustrious from his initiative work in the sixties through to the present day, his virtuosity allowing him to tour extensively right around the world. Not only has he played with so many well-respected musicians that there is far too little space here to list them all, he is able to move between musical genres at will and with consummate ease.

*************************** NEW THIS WEEK ***************************

Young Swing Violin Virtuoso Ben Holder @ St John’s Arts Centre,St John's Walk, Market Street,  Old Harlow CM17 0AJ on Saturday 26th January @ 3pm.  Admission: £12
Details: 01406 365 731     www.traditional-jazz.com        E-mail: tjp...@traditional-jazz.com

Ex Harlow drummin’ Man, John Petters collaborated on a new CD project with virtuoso, young swing violinist, Ben Holder – resulting in the album, “Swing That Music”, released just before Christmas.  Ben and John now recreate some of that exceptional music.
Ben Holder was recently featured in an interview about his career on BBC Jazz Club, where presenter, Walter Love  played  several of the tracks from the CD.   As a recent review said of Ben, “... get your feet tapping and your jaw dropping at the speed of his fingers. Top quality musicianship and utter entertainment”.
This young genius is probably the most gifted swing violinist to emerge since Stephane Grappelli.  Taught classically from six, he studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire during which he discovered Jazz - swing masters such as Benny Goodman and the great jazz violinists, Stephane Grappelli, Joe Venuti and Stuff Smith.
Ben's innate sense of swing stems from those early listening sessions - and his various awards bear testimony to his abilities.  Expect a programme which includes American Songbook items as September Song, Swing That Music, Crazy Rhythm, Tiger Rag and more.
Ben will take the stage alongside popular, star pianist Tim Huskisson.

Bass player Sam Burgess is a stalwart of the UK jazz scene. As well as playing on numerous film soundtracks, his driving bass lines can be heard accompanying bands of all styles.
Chris Higginbottom is one of the UK’s top drummers, and is a member of the Kyle Eastwood band and the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars. A Royal Academy of Music graduate, Chris lived in New York for eight years where he played with many of the biggest names in jazz. He has performed all over the world and has released two albums as a leader. James said: “It seems very appropriate to bring my trio to present a concert telling the story of jazz piano to help raise funds for the Archive, which itself covers the history of jazz. We’re looking forward to it!”
The concert will include a tribute to the late Brian Browning, in thanks and recognition for the generous legacy he left to the National Jazz Archive in his will. There will be a display of some of the photos he took at the East Side Jazz Club, Leytonstone over the years.
The concert is at Loughton Methodist Church, 260 High Road, Loughton, Essex IG10 1RB, close to the Archive’s home in Loughton Library, where extensive parking is available. The church and the archive are about a kilometre away from Loughton Station on the Central Line, and are also served by numerous bus routes. The concert starts at 2.30pm and tickets cost £15.  For details and to book tickets, visit https://www.nationaljazzarchive.org.uk/news-events,
