There will be a Jazz In the Park evening, on Tuesday, 7th July @ 7:30pm (doors 7pm) to partly celebrate the 900th anniversary of All Saints’ Church, situated within the four and a half mile brick wall of Braxted Park, profits for church funds. The very well-known traditional jazz band the Pete Allen Jazz Band will be performing in the Pavilion at the stunning location of Braxted Park, Braxted Park Road, Essex, CM8 3EN www.braxtedpark.co.uk

SIMON BROWN on piano makes his debut at Hadleigh Jazz Club leading his quintet alongside LEWIS WRIGHT on vibraphone (fresh from appearing with Wynton Marsalis at The Barbican), SIMON HURLEY on guitar, DAVE OLNEY on bass and GEORGE DOUBLE on drums.

George Shearing, a working class blind boy from Battersea grew to become a brilliant, US Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist with his unique quintet sound. One of the best-selling jazz artists of all time, Shearing performed at Carnegie Hall and for three presidents at The White House with his unique mix of swing, bop & sophisticated easy listening. His many recordings include hits “Lullaby of Birdland”, “Pick Yourself Up” and “September in the Rain”.

The Len Phillips Big Band are an all-star 16 piece swing band playing the music of Basie, Miller, Ellington, Goodman, Heath, Herman and Kenton. Personnel includes Roy Willox, Tony Fisher, David Black, Chris Gower, Andy Flaxman, Harold Fisher and Stuart Brooks.

The Ipswich Jazz Collective meet once a month on a Friday to hold a jam session at the Golden Hind Pub on Nacton Road in Ipswich. They start at 7:30 with bass, drums, keyboard gear and a PA set up. The Walnut Jazz Jam Session takes place every Thusday in Norwich. It replaces the ‘Jazz Jam with Rich Buddie‘ previously on a Monday. 29th July - The Alan Barnes All Star Quintet

That highly distinctive clarinettist with the twinkle in the eye, Brian White, is a welcome and frequent visitor to Theydon. Incredibly, he first formed his Magna (literally “great”) Jazz Band some 60 years ago, playing at the Railway Hotel in Epsom, and had a Parlophone LP out in 1961! Much has changed since then, but not the standard of the traditional jazz this popular band plays with such spirit. With some new faces in the line-up, they’ll be presenting a lively evening of your jazz favourites.

Theydon Jazz Club will be bursting at the seams when we welcome our biggest band to date. The MBBB is a traditional big band line-up of 16 or so musicians – a mixture of young and old, men and women, with two vocalists. In its present form it was created in 1991, and named after its inspirational Musical Director, teacher Melvin Beddow. It has since regularly performed in and around Essex, playing a wide range of authentic big band music, including swing, jive, rock ’n’ roll, pop and jazz. They’ll be great to dance to (if there’s room!) but, whatever, they are guaranteed to get you “In The Mood”.

Enjoy a taste of the West Country with the visit of Roger Marks’ & Chris Walker’s Pedigree Jazzband to Theydon. The co-leaders share a fondness for the style of jazz popularized by the likes of Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball during the “Trad Boom” of the late 50s and early 60s. It is this that makes up “A Tribute To Trad Jazz”, a show professionally presented by Chris and Roger, together with informative commentary, anecdotes and humour. One of the finest trumpeters in the West, Graham Trevarton, completes a brilliant front line. The Pedigree plays with all the smoothness and intoxicating spirit of the amber liquid after which they’re named. Cheers!

The seven-piece Dixie Hotshots have already pleased Theydon Jazz Club members with their hot Chicago-style jazz several times over and become club favourites. Not only does Jackie share his trombone artistry with another great octogenarian, Chris Barber, but his magnificent front line has Barber’s trumpeter, the peerless Peter Rudeforth, and a Barber stalwart for 34 years, John Crocker. Snake Davis was brought up in South Wales. After paying his dues in the clubs and hangouts of London, Liverpool and New York, he is now established as one of the UK's leading sax players. He has recorded with Paul McCartney, George Michael, Ray Charles, Lisa Stansfield, The Eurythmics to name but a few. He has also made live appearances on award winning nationwide UK TV show "Tonight with Jonathon Ross" with James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan, Wet Wet Wet, Massive Attack, Marc Almond and others. He has also played live with Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick, Linda Lewis, Edwin Starr, Bob Geldof, Paul Carrack and many more. As if that weren't enough, he was the musical director for M People and currently for Heather Small.
Snake is instantly recognisable for his soulful and searing sax sound, as heard on Lisa Stansfield's “Change”, “Someday”, M People hits, Paul Hardcastle's albums and Take That’s “Million Love Songs”. With a storming rhythm section there will be lots of new material, a wonderful mix of soul, funk and jazz, always melodic, always soulful. Featuring the haunting Japanese shakuhachi and Irish whistle along with saxes, there is something for everybody here, young old or in between!
On the night Snake will be joined on stage by Paul Birchall on keyboards, Simon Goulding on bass and Ali Thynne on drums - The A Team!

Robert started playing saxophone and clarinet whilst at art school in Bristol. He toured with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra throughout Europe, the USA and the Far East, and appeared as featured soloist on six of their albums. Since then Robert has worked with many bands, - Humphrey Lyttleton, The Great British Jazz Band, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Back to Basie and as far afield as Bryan Ferry. He is no stranger to the recording studio in his own right and has taught jazz.

Karen took up the tenor sax whilst studying composition at the Royal Northern College of Music and since relocating to London has become a busy freelance musician. In 2004 Karen began a three year stint in Humphrey Lyttelton’s band, touring UK and Europe. Karen played at the Ginza Festival, Tokyo in 2006 with Tina May and pianist Nikki Iles, appeared at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2007 with South African singer Esther Miller along with US trumpet star Jeremy Pelt. Karen has made guest appearances with George Melly, Jackie Dankworth and Van Morrison. In 2010 Karen won the British Jazz Award for Tenor Saxophone.

Dan’s music harks back to the roots of early rent party/juke playing. His performances encompass the whole acoustic blues genre from the rough-edge bottleneck blues of the Mississippi Delta to the intricate finger-picking styles of Texas and the Carolinas. He focuses on rare and standard blues classics. Dan has performed extensively in the USA. He gravitated towards the Deep South in early 2007 whilst making a documentary on the history of blues and has since spent 16 weeks playing around the Mississippi Delta and surrounding areas. During his travels, he met and interviewed blues legends David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, Henry Gray and Hubert Sumlin and members of Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters’ family. Recently, Dan has developed a strong following among blues dancers seeking to re-create the juke-joint style experience of the 1920s-1950s and plays regularly for blues dancers at the Joker in Islington, London.

Anthony Kerr is regarded by many as the most exciting vibraphone player in jazz today. Having spent two years studying and performing in New York in the 1980s, he then moved to London to perform and record with many great musicians. Voted best instrumentalist in the 1994 British Jazz Awards and has also won nominations in the ‘Rising Star’ category in 1995, 1996 and 1998. Anthony has recorded in his own right, works as a session musician, and has been commissioned to write for television and radio as well on his own behalf.

Described by the late Humphrey Lyttelton as "formidable," Simon Spillett is a British jazz saxophonist who leads his own quartet featuring John Critchinson (piano), Alec Dankworth (bass) and Clark Tracey (drums). He has won several awards, including the tenor saxophone category of the British Jazz Awards (2011), Jazz Journal's Critic's Choice CD of the Year (2009) and Rising Star in the BBC Jazz Awards (2007). He has worked with Sir John Dankworth, Stan Tracey, Peter King and The Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra. He has recorded three albums, Introducing Simon Spillett (Woodville Records, 2007), Sienna Red (Woodville Records, 2008) and Square One (Gearbox Records, 2013), all of which have received highly favourable reviews. His festival, concert and club appearances across the UK have included sold-out gigs at Ronnie Scott's and the Brecon Jazz Festival and he has broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Jazz-Line Up with his own band.
He has also penned the definitive biography of UK jazz legend Tubby Hayes, and articles for magazines and acted as a consultant for a number of jazz record labels, in which capacity he has written booklet essays for over seventy albums.

Matt Robinson is a London based pianist, composer and improviser, working in jazz and contemporary music. He has written music for several of his own projects and performs regularly around the UK. Matt studied at the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded the Edwin Samuel Dove prize and a Yamaha Jazz Scholarship upon graduation in 2012. Since then, he has performed and recorded with many leading musicians and is a member of several performing bands. Matt also plays piano and keyboards in Snowpoet, a project of original songs led by Chris Hyson and Lauren Kinsella. Their debut EP was released in 2014 and the band are returning to the studio later this year.

Andrew Robb (www.andrewrobbmusic.com) was born in and grew up in Edinburgh. He started learning double bass at seven and became immersed in classical and jazz. Equally versatile in both styles he has just completed his undergraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He won The BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2009 and has performed on BBC Radio Three and Radio Scotland. Andrew has been fortunate enough to have performed with international artists such Jazz Messengers trumpeter Valery Ponomarev, New York pianist David Berkman, vibraphone and marimba virtuoso Arthur Lipner, Sax stars Peter Ehwald, Tommy Smith and Tim Garland, top Hammond organist Tony Monaco and Norwegian double bass phenomenon Arild Andersen.

As usual Mark Hale will be on Drums and hosting the evenings music from 8.30pm. Entry is free with a contribution asked of the audience at the end of the first of two sets.

1st June, Gilad Atzmon - Alto Saxophone

Gilad Atzmon is a British Jazz artist and author, born in Israel in 1963 and trained at the Rubin Academy of Music, Jerusalem (Composition and Jazz). A multi-instrumentalist he plays saxophones, clarinet and ethnic woodwind instruments . His album Exile was the BBC jazz album of the year in 2003. Described by John Lewis at the Guardian as the “hardest-gigging man in British jazz.” Atzmon tours extensively around the world. His albums often explore political themes and the music of the Middle East.
As a member of the Blockheads, Gilad has also recorded and performed with Ian Dury, Robbie Williams, Sinead O'Connor and Paul McCartney. Gilad has also recorded with Robert Wyatt, the Water Boys. In 2014 he recorded with Pink Floyd and is featured on their last album The Endless River (Anisina).
In 2000 Gilad founded the Orient House Ensemble in London and started re-defining his own roots in the light of his emerging ethical awareness. The Ensemble includes Chris Higginbottom on Drums, Yaron Stavi on Bass and Frank Harrison on piano & electronics.
Gilad is also a writer and shall be launching his latest book 'A- Zion - The definitive Israli Lexicon - Gilad Atzmon & Enzo Apicella'. He writes on political matters, social issues, Jewish identity and culture. His papers are published on very many press outlets.

As a bandleader and reed player he has amazed his listeners with his powerful personal style that combines great bebop artistry and Middle-Eastern roots in a sophisticated, sometimes ironical manner. Influenced by Coltrane’s powerful approach on the sax, Gilad's live performances are simply breathtaking.

Fleur is one of the new breed of jazz singers who, having initially trained classically in voice and trumpet, later found her true passion for jazz. Fleur began singing at small clubs and bars only to find she adored the sense of freedom that jazz singing can bring and quickly gained an impressive local following. Fleur is privileged to be a student of The First Lady of British Jazz, Claire Martin, and the collaboration has produced a very fine performer with musical intellect and skill as an improviser. Her influences spanning jazz, soul and blues genres, include Carman McRae, Shirley Horn, and Ella Fitzgerald.

QUE PASA FORTHCOMING GIGS - Formed in 2013, Que Pasa are the regular and popular house band each month at Rhodes Centre in Bishop’s Stortford. The band’s members have many decades of experience touring and recording in a wide range of musical situations including jazz, dance, fusion, folk, rock and classical music. The band’s repertoire comprises Latin jazz, standards, originals and contemporary jazz.

Adam Amor – tenor, alto and soprano saxes. During his 5-year residency in New York, Adam studied with Tito Puente, Luis Bauzo and Paquito D'Rivera. He is equally at home playing pop, rock or jazz, bringing a real sense of style and communication.
Paul Higgs – trumpet is renowned as one of the UK’s leading trumpet players and composers. Paul's career includes performing, composing and arranging music for film, TV and theatre. He was a MD for the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company.
Paul Robinson - drums is one of the UK’s leading drummers. He toured with Nina Simone for 19 years. Paul has played, toured and recorded with a huge variety of artists including Trevor Horn, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart and Pet Shop Boys.
Peter Lemer – piano has been an integral part of the British jazz scene since the early 1960s. His past bands include Pete Lemer Quintet, , Gilgamesh, Baker-Gurvitz Army, Seventh Wave, Harry Beckett's Joy Unlimited, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, Mike Oldfield Group, In Cahoots and Miller/Baker/Lemer.
Steve Cook – double bass has played with many leading jazz artists since the 1970s, including Barbara Thompson, Pete Jacobsen, Michael Garrick, Mark Murphy, Gil Evans and Mike Westbrook. He toured and recorded with many progressive rock bands.

Peggy, Duke and Benny come to Chingford for National Jazz Archive fundraising concert
The songs of Peggy Lee and the music of Duke Ellington performed in the style of the Benny Goodman Quartet. This concert is a unique coming together of three of the greatest names in jazz, featured in a wonderfully entertaining programme of much loved classics and fascinating, rarely heard repertoire at Chingford Assembly Hall on Friday 29 May.
The show stars Georgina Jackson on vocals and trumpet (from BBC Radio 2 and Ronnie Scott’s), and Pete Long on clarinet and reeds (from ‘Echoes of Ellington’, Ronnie Scott’s and the Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert). Backing will be provided by Trevor Jones on piano, Anthony Kerr on vibes, Dave Chamberlain on bass and Richard Pite on drums.
This concert is one of a series during 2015 to raise funds to support the work of the National Jazz Archive, and is staged in conjunction with the Jazz Repertory Company, the people behind the popular ‘Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller at Carnegie Hall’ and ‘100 Years of Jazz in 99 Minutes’.

Singers will audition. The nominated three go on to sing three songs at a concert later on that day. There will be a featured artist doing a set, this year it is Kai Hoffman. The accompanist for the auditions will be pianist Dave Frankel, with his trio as the house band for the evening concert. Singers will audition with one song to the panel and then the concert will be that evening. All proceeds will go to the Samaritans.

To celebrate 100 years since the birth of Billie Holiday, the critically acclaimed tribute, ‘Lady Sings The Blues’, is coming, featuring Val Wiseman, twice crowned ‘Best Singer’ in the British Jazz Awards. Six jazz stars will perform alongside Val Wiseman, including Alan Barnes and Digby Fairweather; all bar one are British Jazz Awards winners.

Jo Harman and Company draws on a mix of roots, blues, gospel and soul influences. Jo secured more than fifty UK and European festival gigs in 2013, including Cheltenham and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals. This year Jo and her band received four nominations at the British Blues Awards; Jo won the female vocalist award.

Also added to the festival line-up are Octopus, an eight-piece band who will open the festival on Friday evening with classic swing, performing fabulous arrangements of big band classics. Saturday opens with the John Ellis Trio. John is a pianist and singer whose musicianship has been utilised by Tom Jones, Corinne Bailey Ray, Lily Allen, John Squire (Stone Roses) and others. His trio perform a collection of songs ranging from standards to Irish folk, Prince and The Stone Roses and originals all with unique jazz/blues and soul improvised twist.

The wonderful Mahakasyapa Ensemble will perform an original suite. This new ensemble formed by bassist and composer, Paul Baxter, will premiere an original suite in dedication to The Festival. The Mahakasyapa Ensemble will combine elements of Jazz, Blues, Folk and Classical, and features Top UK Trumpeter and Jazz/Folk crossover artist Neil Yates,. The festival is also delighted to welcome back Nicola Farnon, widely recognised as one of the classiest Jazz and Swing musicians in the UK and Ben Beattie's After Midnight Band plus Simon Cunliffe-Lister.

New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy – The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all ‘tools of the trade’.

The saxophone workshop is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price.
Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone.
This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion.
The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing. The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.

The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

Five Star Swing have performed on BBC TV’s “Children in Need”,Dame Vera Lynn’s War Veteran’s Charity Balls, The Blackpool Tower Ballroom, plus three National Theatre Tours, private events throughout the country and released their latest album “Swing ‘n’ Sinatra“.

Chris Smith (Jnr) – Band Leader. Chris’s compositions and arrangements are frequently played by Jazz FM, Capital Radio, BBC Radio Big Band, Royal Variety Performance and of course Five Star Swing! As a Piano/Trumpet player, Chris has appeared on BBC breakfast TV, Top Of The Pops, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and The Royal Variety Show. He has toured extensively with the Herb Miller Orchestra (Glenn’s Brother), as well as Jazz festivals throughout the world. Experienced in all types of functions and Stage Shows, under Chris’ direction five Star Swing’s excellent vocalists and musicians create the vibrant sound of the Big Band era. Style is added from an exciting repertoire, featuring songs from Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Glenn Miller and Jazz favourites, through to modern day artistes – Robbie Williams, Jamie Cullum and Jools Holland.

Simone – Vocalist / Saxophonist Simone has performed on the TV Film Lace 2, recorded with Paul Weller and was featured alto saxophone solo on the Paul Merton Show. She was also lead alto saxophone for the New Squadroniares and latter days of the Ivy Benson show band, including a performance on the Russell Harty TV Show.

Trombone player, Mike Innes, has recorded with Shirley Bassey, Jools Holland, Gary Barlow, Elaine Paige, Roy Castle, Harry Secombe, ‘Darius’ and The Pet Shop Boys. He was the musical director for the English entry for the “Song for Europe” and with the Ronnie Scott’s big band. Mike’s television appearances include – Top of the Pops, TFI Friday, Jools Holland, Steve Coogan, A Song for Europe, Noel’s House Party and MTV.
