Annie's Jazz re-opens on Tuesday the 6th of January with Georgina Jackson.
After
acquiring a strange and somewhat unfashionable obsession with Jazz and
Big Band music at an early age, (and in Wigan!) Georgina began her
musical career working as a professional trumpet player almost
everywhere up, down, left and right of the country. Working for years
with many famous faces and Big Bands in Concert Halls, television and
radio, Georgina learnt her trade as a lead trumpet player.
Harbouring a desire to wear a posh frock rather than the same as 'the
lads' in the band, Georgina decided to make a dash for the front mike!
Setting up her own Big Band to play at a local ballroom was the first
step to fufilling her frock and singing ambitions, and when the audience
didn't booo (but actually cheered!) she decided that she would like to
do it again, quite a few times actually!
Having sung in and led
various sized bands with miscellaneous musicians in some very
miscellaneous venues, Georgina decided to record and release her first
CD. With support from Jazz FM (CD of the week) and Sir Michael Parkinson
''til there was you' climbed to the dizzy heights of Number 8 in the
HMV jazz charts. The critical success of her first album led to Georgina
landing her dream job as resident singer with the Ronnie Scotts Jazz
Orchestra, were she performs most months.
Georgina's long awaited
second album 'Watch What Happens' (recorded at Abbey Road studios,
London) was released in June 2012, the first single 'Change Partners'
shot to number 1 in the Itunes Jazz Chart and the album fought the likes
of Nina Simone and Miles Davies to get into the top 5! The London
Evening Standard awarded 'Watch What Happens' the CD of the week in July
2012.
In May 2012 the Radio 2 BBC Big Band asked Georgina to
perform a concert of the songs of Peggy Lee (one of Georgina's
heroine's) this was broadcast in two half hour programmes on Radio 2 in
August. A live concert/broadcast followed for BBC Radio 2's 'Friday
Night is Music Night' in which Georgina sang Irving Berlin songs with
the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Steve Vintner trio. Georgina is one of
the most sought after trumpet players and singers in the UK today.

13th February - Backporch: www.backporch.org.uk Mike Rushmore Vocals and washboard, Jonny Miller Guitar, 12-string Tony Guitar, Steve Graham Harps.
Back
at Marigolds by popular demand the Back Porch’s an unusual and unique
variety of foot-stomping acoustic-ish good-time blues with a Southern
States tinge and a dash of skiffle, has seen them build a strong
following. With their trademark foot stomping rhythms and a lot of
laughter, they seem to be able to switch from humour to heartbreak in
the blink of an eye. Their music regularly features on local radio and
they are well-known in the thriving East Anglian live music scene.
The unusual line-up features the strong, melodic vocals of Mike
Rushmore, (with right foot on bass drum anchoring the band), world class
lead guitar Jonny Miller, the extraordinarily powerful and evocative
mouth harp of Steve Graham and 12-string Tony.
They have recently
released their second all-original album “Back Porch” and their live
shows remain an experience not to be missed. This band will make you
laugh, cry and tap your feet! After the Back Porch experience you’re
sure to leave feeling better than when you arrived!
27th February - Vasilis Xenopoulos: www.vasilisx.com Vasilis Xenopoulos sax, Ted Beament Keyboards, Murray Salmon bass and Les Cirkle drums.
Born
in Athens Saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos started playing clarinet and
piano when 9 but switched to the saxophone at 13, and studied at the
Philippos Nakas Conservatory in Athens. His potential allowed him to
gain invaluable experience playing with some of the top names on the
Greek jazz scene.
In 1999 Vasilis was awarded a jazz scholarship to
the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston MA. There he studied
under Billy Pierce, George Garzone and Andy McGhee and joined the
European Jazz Youth Orchestra and toured with them across Europe.
Vasilis moved to London in 2002 and continued studying under the
guidance of Eddie Harvey, Stan Sulzmann, Jimmy Hastings and Pete Cook.
He formed his first Quartet in 2005 and established himself as one of
London’s up and coming jazz saxophonists. Since then he has worked with
some of the best musicians on the British and International jazz scene
and far too many to list here.
In 2009 he formed his current
ensemble “The Xtet” and their debut album “Loud City” containing 8
original compositions was released on 33Jazz Records in 2011 to much
critical acclaim.
Vasilis has appeared in many guises, as guest
soloist, as band leader or as saxophone section leader in jazz venues
and jazz festivals throughout the UK. He is currently lead tenor in the
Steve Taylor Big Band, and in the Ealing based Sound of 17 Big Band. His
explosive and fiery style means he is in great demand as a saxophone
player for popular music and as a session musician.
13th March - The Untouchables: theuntouchablesblues.com
Keith Parker harp and vocals, Peter Ellison guitar and vocals, Paul 'Chuck' Green doghouse bass and Malcolm 'Eddie the Legend' Buckland drums.
The Untouchables are champions of raw blues, basing their sound on the
swinging soul of the great artists who recorded for Chess Records in the
50s. With a string bass, a stripped down drum kit, a cranked guitar
through a hot valve amp and a wailing harp, this band turns any venue
into a rocking juke joint.
It has been said that, “The Untouchables
play sparse, tasteful Chicago blues. Not blues rock but tight, swinging,
focussed, authentic sounding urban blues, with every element honed to
its bare essentials in an unostentatious display of taste and restraint’
and ‘The band have lived and breathed the style until it's so much a
part of them that it oozes out of their pores. If you like Little
Walter, Bo Diddley or Willie Dixon, then this is as close as you’ll get
to seeing them live. Utterly superb."
27th March - The Noemi Nuti Quintet with Quentin Collins: http://noeminuti.com & http://www.quentincollins.com
Born
and raised in New York City from Italian descent, Noemi Nuti is an
up-and-coming jazz vocalist and songwriter currently residing in London.
Noemi studied music at Brunel University where jazz vocal improvisation
became her driving focus and further studied improvisation and
composition at Trinity College of Music.
She toured the UK as part
of the Tomorrow’s Warrior’s project, ‘Jazz Alive’ project and has taken
part in the London Jazz Festival on a number of occasions as well as
being involved in a number of jazz projects with well-known jazz
musicians including being a regular performer with NYJO (National Youth
Jazz Orchestra).
Having a love of Brazilian music Noemi has toured
Brazil and has formed her own band playing contemporary jazz within a
Brazilian music frame.
Quentin Collins is one of Europe's most
in-demand trumpet players, both as a band leader or playing for somebody
else’s band. He has a wealth of experience working with many other
well-known musicians too numerous to list here and as a much sought
after session musician playing across many genres. Over the years,
Quentin has toured extensively both in the UK and abroad as well as
holding several residencies. He is no stranger to the recording studios
both in his own right and for other musicians as well as broadcasting on
radio and TV.
Of late Quentin has taken on the role of producer and
was asked by Noemi to co-produce her debut release called, ‘ Nice to
Meet You’.

Fleur is one of the new breed of jazz singers who, having initially trained classically in voice and trumpet, later found her true passion for jazz. Fleur began singing at small clubs and bars only to find she adored the sense of freedom that jazz singing can bring and quickly gained an impressive local following. Fleur is privileged to be a student of The First Lady of British Jazz, Claire Martin, and the collaboration has produced a very fine performer with musical intellect and skill as an improviser. Her influences spanning jazz, soul and blues genres, include Carman McRae, Shirley Horn, and Ella Fitzgerald.

*** MUSIC COURSES ***
New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy – The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all ‘tools of the trade’.
Where: Ealing W5, West London
When: Course A – Fortnightly on Sundays plus performance dates and masterclasses
Course B – Fortnightly on Saturdays and as above
Course C – Monday evenings
Who for: Individuals who are serious about developing their knowledge
and skills with a view to creating successful jazz performance – all
styles, all ages, singers and instrumentalists.
Why: BIVJA is keen to encourage mature students as well as young people at the start of their careers.
There are very few bespoke courses for those who wish to empower
themselves with a greater understanding of the rhythm section, band
leading and performance confidence. Is it for me? Call for an informal
chat on 020 8992 1571 (leave message and we’ll call you back).
UNIQUE – BIVJA promotes a warm but challenging environment and it’s different because of its very ‘hands on’ approach. As the course develops ALL students will have acquired some practical knowledge of piano, bass, kit and percussion playing and band leading skills in addition to vocal and technical skills. Sessions will be followed by a de-brief, student feedback, career support and Q+A – again a unique opportunity
Specialist workshops – Participants will have access to workshops on specific skills such as recording, PA set up and mixing and workshops with visiting professional singers, instrumentalists and mentors. Tutors will vary including Gareth Williams – piano; Peter Ind – bass; Les Cirkel – drums. The support group created by this enterprise will assist students in self-promotion and performance opportunities.
BIVJA Director – Verona Chard – 020 8992 1571 – leave message, and contact details. 07985 440902 www.veronachard.com/bivja v...@veronachard.com
Saxophone Workshop www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk
The
saxophone workshop is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone
technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The
workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone.
The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a
private lesson at a fraction of the price.
Each class explores
saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and
group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of
practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific
concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone.
This is worked
concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres
of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated
to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members
a feeling of completion.
The method of teaching focuses on four
principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and
personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that
connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

Jazz Workshop www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk
The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing. The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. We will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. Please send all items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk
3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them.
5. We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
Many thanks
