Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival - Colston Hall from 1 -3 March 2013. Tickets are now on sale Online:www.bristoljazzandbluesfest.com / Colston Hall: T 0117 922 3686

Along with generous helping of blues, the Festival brings alive trad and swing with three bands who prove that the best music never stales, merely ages like good wine.
The Big Chris Barber Band is a ten piece led by the trombonist with the most remarkable CV in British music. He's played with Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Doctor John, Van Morrison. Eric Clapton, Keith Emerson, Mark Knopfler, Joe Harriott… . His band ranges well beyond trad and blues. With seven horns in the front line, Barber can reproduce a New Orleans Street Parade, present authentic arrangements of Duke Ellington's Black and Tan Fantasy and has even been known to play Miles' Davis classic All Blues.
The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band focus on the classic repertoire of Louis Armstrong, with Alan Bateman taking Armstrong's trumpet parts and brother Ian emulating Trummy Young on trombone. The five piece has been acclaimed for bringing audiences the sound of the much loved Armstrong All Stars, who played round the globe from the late 1940s. The tune titles speak for themselves: Strutting with Some Barbecue; West End Blues; Muskrat Ramble. This is where real jazz began. A sellout appearance at Ronnie Scott's last year showed that Louis soaring virtuoso licks have plenty of life in them yet!
Alyn Shipton's Buck Clayton Legacy Band celebrates the great swing trumpeter who shot to fame with the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1930s. Clayton passed a batch of unrecorded arrangements to Shipton, his biographer, and the writer, who leads the band from the bass, pulled together an all star band the perform them. Alan Barnes clarinet and alto playing energises the front line, along with trumpeter Menno Daams. This is no tribute band, but a superb ensemble making new music in a living tradition. The regular 'Norwich jazzjam', goes from strength to strength, reports fan and EDP arts reviewer, Roger Haywood. This gig takes place every Monday from 8.30pm at The Cottage pub in Norwich www.jazzjam.org.uk . Players from across Norfolk (and some from even further afield) enjoy playing the tunes of their choice backed by what has been rated as one of the finest small bands in the region.

Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with the celebrated Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. On drums is Matt Furness who drives the whole group - a veteran of many years ... but still only 14! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can even sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb, that the band tends to use, at better prices than retail.
The jazzjam five are making a guest appearance at the Dereham Jazz Society, Lyng, on Wednesday 6 March, www.lakeside-jazz-club.co.uk/2.html The band will be featuring two of the regular jammers on the frontline, the veteran jazz star Gerry Salisbury on cornet and Buzz Clarke who has played around the world on trombone.
The Cottage is CAMRA's award winning city pub. Whether you want to jam or just listen to some fine jazz, you will get a warm welcome. The pub offers good food plus a range of real ales, great Belgian beers, single malts .... or soft drinks, teas and coffees for those driving!!! www.thecottagenorwich.co.uk
All players get a chance to show their skills; fair competence is the minimum requirement but the essentials are commitment, improvising skills and a passion for swinging jazz! Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set the tempo, agree the intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. The show is available on line worldwide for 7 days via the BBC's 'Listen again' facility. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx

8th February - The Jives: www.thejives.com & www.myspace.com/thejivesduo Jeff Chapman on guitars, vocals, foot stomp and Al E. Bye on harmonicas, jaw harp, percussion.

Marigolds Blues club makes no apologies for bringing back yet another great act that have given us such great entertainment in previous gigs. The Jives are a traditional, delta blues act from Leigh on Sea in Essex. Jeff and Al have been on the circuit for decades although they did not come together in their current guise until 2005. As the Jives, they have played in blues clubs and festivals all over England and have made numerous European Tours. Their sound is simple, authentic performances of many early blues standards. The Jives play a wealth of blues covers in their own style from the likes of Billy Boy Arnold, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, Mose Allison etc. with the emphasis on high energy Essex R&B. The Jives have been described as all spit and sawdust meaning that they endeavour to keep the traditional blues alive. They give life, access and meaning to an absolutely vital but historic form and are the closest approximation many of us will get to hearing the real thing played live.

24th February - The Derek Nash & Dick Pearce Quartet - A Tribute to Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker
www.dereknash.com & www.dickpearce.co.uk

Derek Nash is a vibrant and charismatic performer on all 4 sax's from Soprano to Baritone that needs no introduction to Marigolds. He is equally at home leading the award winning Jazz ensemble Sax Appeal to Funky Heights, or swinging his way to best CD of the year 2000 with Spike Robinson.
As a full member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, he has performed in front of 65,000 people at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff & also to over 100,000 at the Glastonbury Festival. He has appeared live & on TV with with many top performers including Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, Tom Jones, Paul Carrack, Jamie Cullum, Mavis Staples, Will Young, Ruby Turner, Sam Brown and so many more notable jazz musicians. However, there is too little space to do justice to Derek's career and the reader should log onto his website.

Dick Pearce began playing at an early age of 12 but it wasn't until he was de-mobbed from the army in 1972, that he began playing with bands such as those led by Graham Collier, Dudu Pukwana, Pat Evans and Keith Tippet. In the mid to late 70s Dick was drawn more towards harmonically structured improvisation, playing with jazz groups led by the likes of Don Rendell, Michael Garrick and Mike Westbrook, while also playing in with his own generation of young jazz musicians. In 1980 Dick joined The Ronnie Scott Quintet, with whom he travelled all over the world for the following 14 years. In more recent years Dick has been heard with - Alan Barnes / Don Weller's 'Tribute to Cannonball Adderley Band'. The Don Weller Big Band. Tim Richards' 'Great Spirit'. John Williams' 'New Perspectives'. Stan and Clarke Tracey's 'Ellingtonia'. 'Dick Pearce Trio. John Critchinson's tribute to Ronnie Scott band and tonight Derek Nash.

8th March - Jimmy C and the Bluesdragons www.bluesdragons.com www.myspace.com/jimmycandthebluesdragons

Yet another fantastic band returning to Marigolds by popular demand.
Canadian - born singer, guitarist Jimmy C moved to Britain via Vancouver, San Francisco and Japan since when Jimmy and the band are earning a deserved reputation as one of the most entertaining and hard-working bands on the London circuit. Playing a repertoire which includes blues classics from Robert Johnson and T-bone Walker, various Kings of the blues, that is Albert, Freddie and BB, they follow through to the music which the British Blues Invasion of North America left in its wake, from the Rolling Stones to Cream, from Jimi Hendrix to the Doors and even Steppenwolf They freely admit they are not blues purists but as they point out neither were the blues greats - their mission is to do what Muddy Waters did, and what Rufus Thomas did, to entertain and get you dancing. Jimmy C & The Blues Dragons play sharp snappy blues, with a little bit of edge and an element of fun and clearly enjoy what they do and seem able to communicate this to audiences where ever they play"

29th March - Tommaso Storace Quartet
www.tommasostarace.com

Born in 1975 in Milano, Italy Tommaso started playing the saxophone and studying music at the age of 18. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1994 where he graduated at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2000. He has performed with some of the most respected jazz musicians including Billy Cobham, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Jim Mullen, Jonathan Gee, Paolo Pellegatti, Gianni Giudici. In 2004 he collaborated with award winning oscar film composer Dario Marianelli ( 'Pride and Prejudice' and ' The Atonement' ) recording music for 'This Little Life', a BBC drama for Channel Four. In 2008 Tommaso was awarded with an Honorary Membership by Birmingham Conservatoire given to him for his significant contributions made across the years within the various branches of the music profession. When not busy performing concerts between the United Kingdom and Italy and composing, Tommaso is no stranger to the recording studios and has made several well received CDs.

12th April - The Fugitives: www.thefugitives.co.uk

Terry Boon - vocals, bass, guitar; Keith Harris - guitar, slide Guitar, harmonica, vocals; John Andreotti - guitar, vocals and Ken Shillingford - Drums

At the risk of repeating ourselves yet again another fantastic band returns to Marigolds by popular demand. The Fugitives repertoire includes songs that span the whole genre of blues music whether that is country blues from the 20's and 30's, Chicago and Delta blues from the 40's and 50's, right through the 60's to more recent songs that might take their fancy. The band members met sometime in the 70s and with various other musicians formed such 'miscellaneous' groups as "Eddie and the Dentures" and "The Human Jangle" before forming "Standing Flat". We are reliably informed that the latter was a band much appreciated by John Peel. The "Outsyders" followed, playing all their own music before the lads returned to the music that they love doing, the Blues. Often people in the audience, not versed in the Blues, are heard to say, "We didn't think we liked the blues but this is somehow different and we've had a great time," and this is no less true of the Fugitives performances. Don't miss them.

26th April - The Tim Thornton Quartet: www.timthorntonbass.com

It has been said that Tim is the most natural young double-bassist in years and that he is a player with a strong technique who uses the full range of the bass, and is capable of great depth, emotion and lyricism. Tim is a regular performer on the British jazz scene having graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire. He comes from a very musical background with his parents Neal Thornton (pianist/composer) and Sally Burgess (Mezzo Soprano/Director) influencing his early interest in the music world. His debut album 'New Kid' (SEHSO05) features Dave O'Higgins, Steve Fishwick, Ross Stanley, Grant Windsor, Chris Draper and Dave Hamblett performing a mixture of original music and arrangements.
He is a regular member of the Ronnie Scott's Allstars lead by James Pearson and also performs and has recorded with many different groups including the Steve Fishwick Quintet, Emma Smith Quintet, Brandon Allen Quartet, Tim Lapthorne Trio, Dave O'Higgins Quartet, Ivo Neame Quintet, Joe Pisto Quartet (Italy), Sector 7 and the Julian Bliss Septet. Tim has previously worked with Stan Sulzmann, Eric Alexander, Jim Mullen, Will Vinson, Guy Barker, Sir Willard White, Gary Husband, Nigel Hitchcock, Alex Garnett, Gilad Atzmon, Anita Wardell, Jeff Williams, Georgia Mancio, Derek Nash, Stan Tracey, Liam Noble, Steve Brown, Tom Cawley, Ernesto Simpson, Jim Hart, Ross Stanley, Nick Smart, Kit Downes, Martin Shaw, Jay Phelps and Matt Skelton to name a few. Tim performs at many venues internationally but can most likely be found playing around London at venues such as Ronnie Scott's, Pizza Express Jazz Club, or the 606 Club.

A trumpet player and composer whose "Killer Shrimp" group won a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Jazz Ensemble in 2007 (not to mention a nomination for Best CD), Damon Brown has spent years living abroad, exploring his craft. The journey has yielded more than musical inspiration, with many international collaborations ensuing, such as the regular quintet that he co-leads with New York sax virtuoso Steve Grossman.
Bassist Martin Zenker has held a professorship in Jazz in Seoul, South Korea, for the past three years. His association with Damon came about after a mutual friend suggested they perform together, and in 2010 Damon made the trip out to perform with him. The resulting concerts cemented a musical friendship that bears fruit to this day, with Martin visiting the UK regularly to perform with Damon's groups.
After deciding in 2011 to collaborate on a joint project, the group has made inroads to the European scene, especially with forays into Germany. Baritone saxophonist Michael Lutzeier is a leading figure on the contemporary German scene, and his contribution to a 2012 South Korean tour ensured his inclusion in the group. With the ensemble completed by Paul Kirby on piano and Clark Tracey on drums, Damon draws on his past experience as a lyrical hard-bop aficionado and his more cutting-edge work with Killer Shrimp to offer listeners a truly sumptuous musical feast for the ears.
Damon Brown - Trumpet, Michael Lutzeier - Baritone, Paul Kirby - Piano, Martin Zenker - Bass, Clark Tracey - Drums

Trad Jazz - Wild Bill & Bechet Tribute - Pete Allen & Allen Bechey with Martin Litton, Keith Donald and John Petters present the first hot jazz of 2013 at St John's Arts Centre, (St John's Walk, Market St. Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ) on Thursday 31st January at 8pm. Admission £10. Soft drinks are available and there are three pubs within 2 minutes walk of the venue.

This gig will be exceptional - reuniting the internationally famous reed man, Pete Allen with young Chicago style cornetist, Allen Beechey in a presentation entitled, "Wild Bill & Bechet". These two powerful jazz giants first 'duelled' together at the Louis Armstrong Festival at Mundesley last April. From the very first opening bars of 'Tiger Rag', at the beginning of the set, a fantastic rapport was established between the jazz veteran and the young challenger - much as had been the situation in New York in the mid '40s when Wild Bill Davison was placed alongside that towering force - Bechet. Those Blue Note 78s, arranged by the remarkable blues and barrelhouse pianist, Art Hodes, were some of the hottest shellacs waxed in the history of jazz. This concert guarantees to recapture that stomping, freewheeling and joyous music. Take a peek at this video, uploaded for your pleasure and enjoyment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYiXRVxA8_4&feature=share
Pete Allen, who was made an honorary citizen of New Orleans, is one of Europe's busiest musicians and bandleaders. From an early professional start in 1976, with Rod Mason's Jazz Band, Pete assailed the slings and arrows of the jazz business and reached the summit of jazz professionalism. A visual performer, Pete's emphasis is always 200 percent on entertainment. He sets out to win on every gig and win he does.
Allen Beechey, now in his thirties, grew up with the sounds of Dixieland jazz ringing in his ears and it was one man in particular, Wild Bill Davison, the hard blowing, whisky drinking cornet player from Defiance, Ohio. He set about assembling a band to play Davison style and his Bright Stars of Jazz featured six other talented young musicians, who recorded for the New Orleans based Jazzology label and delighted club and festival audiences all over the UK. Not trapped in one style, Allen has been involved with the Ken Colyer Trust Band and toured with Barry Martyn's Young Bloods.
Martin Litton, one of the UK's premier traditional jazz pianists and an authority on early jazz piano styles, returns to play one of the best kept instruments on the UK jazz scene - the venue' s stunning Yamaha grand piano. A former sideman with Kenny Ball, Martin has also worked with Humphrey Lyttelton and just about every other name on the jazz circuit. Along with Keith Donald on bass he was part of a number of ensembles I put together to work and record with Wild Bill Davison in the '80s.

An evening of world class jazz from Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble at St. Mary's Church, Wivenhoe on February 8th 2013. Bar available. Doors open 7pm. Followed by a talk included in the ticket price by Gilad, who is an informed and interesting speaker on Palestine, who will discuss his controversial book 'The Wandering Who?' (Zero Books). at 7.30pm. Music by Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble at 8.30pm.

Gilad has been described as 'the best musician living in the world today' (Robert Wyatt, The Guardian). A long-term member of the Blockheads, he has toured extensively. In this not to be missed performance he will be playing tracks from his new album 'The Tide has Changed' - a ''Riotous mix of oompah music-hall cavortings, ...Middle Eastern rhapsodising, ...sensuous clarinet love-songs, and stormy collective blasts' (John Fordham, The Guardian ****).
St. Mary's Church, dating from the fourteenth century, provides a fantastic venue for this event with its wonderful acoustics and attractive interior. It sits at the centre of lower Wivenhoe, a pretty village on the banks of the River Colne with a rich history of boat building and home to many artists and musicians. For more information on the event contact Duncan Boon on 01206 822956 or 07957958724 or via email on bilk...@btinternet.com For more information on Gilad, his music and writing, please go to: http://www.gilad.co.uk/

Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone choir music, with a focus on classical music, ranging from G.Palestrina to Eric Whitacre. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning, posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

John Seeley's Thursday Night Jazz Workshop

Thursday 24th January and 7th, 21st February from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. £7 Entry - All Levels/Instruments Welcome
St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level. The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy will open in January.

The Academy will run weekly in Hackney on Saturday afternoons, under the artistic direction of internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer Julian Joseph, offering talented young instrumentalists and vocalists aged 12-19, the opportunity to work with acclaimed jazz artists to develop their skills through a curriculum underpinned by an introduction to the American roots of jazz. The Duncan Fraser Big Band present:

'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase. The Band features some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK, who feature in Big Band bands such as NYJO, RAM Big Band & The Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

A reminder to tune in to www.1940sukradio.co.uk which plays music from the 1920s to the '40s as well as having very interesting articles on their website. Presenters include the completely bonkers Bob Kerr of the famous Whoopee Band!
Look at www.vintagefestival.co.uk which looks like huge fun and includes James Langton and his Solid Senders. James (erstwhile front-man and vocalist with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra) now lives in New York but makes an occasional foray back to Blighty to front this sensational band.

The Eastbury Concert Band who meet every Friday evening at Bower Hall, Havering-Atte-Bower, near Romford, Essex. are looking for new members, whatever the instrument.

The standard of the band is getting better all the time and it is mainly due to the increase in members and the effort that they put in at rehearsals, so don't let this put you off coming because these 2 situations can only help you get better, if , for example, you are in the position that you haven't played for a long time or you don't think you are good enough.
Playing along with all the other members of the band is one of the best ways of practicing. We do have one or two instruments that we could loan out but don't rely on this as we do not have many; it is better that you have your own instrument. Why not give me, Lance, a ring? Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!
