****************************************** NEW THIS WEEK ******************************************
Sunday 6 May Southend Pier Walk
Friday 11th May - Beverley Stone with Infusion. Buckhurst Hill Sports and Social Club, 50 Queens Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5BY, 8.30pm. A great night with Beverley singing a broad range of music, from sultry jazz vocals through to soul and pop classics.
For as long as she can remember East London born Beverley has been immersed in popular music, starting with the Great American songbook interpreted by the likes of Frank, Ella, Nat and Billie, but also adding more recent artists such as Carole King and Amy Winehouse. The key has always been the combination of melody, musical arrangement, emotion, and the story to be told - the more soul searching the better. Her professional adventure started after leaving her 9-5 job and taking on a singing engagement on the high seas. Her deep love of singing and performing was discovered and her future mapped out. Since then she has travelled to many parts of the world and appeared on British television. Equally at home working with small groups or fronting a swinging Big Band, Beverley has performed at some of the finest venues in the land including Ronnie Scott's, the 606 Club, Pizza Express Soho, and The Forum. While cultivating her songwriting career she has worked with some of the country’s foremost musicians and producers, and her debut album Butterfly Rising is available to buy on iTunes and Amazon.
Infusion consist of Chris Neill (www.chrisneill.co.uk) on keyboards, the remarkable 18 year old Flo Moore on bass, and Phil Hardisty on drums. Amongst numerous awards and accolades they have received Infusion were winners of the 2011 Budvar Brewed Jazz competition at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival for best pub jazz band. They are led by Chris Neill who, despite only being 18, is an award winning pianist and composer in his own right as well as playing piano with several high profile bands such as the Denmark Street Big Band and the Ken Turner Big Band. You can see a video of Beverley singing with the Denmark Street Big Band at http://youtu.be/Mvf9SJeKdFY.
John Seeley's Jazz Workshop
The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level. The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

John Seeley's Saxophone Choir
The saxophone choir is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price.
Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone choir music, with a focus on classical music, ranging from G.Palestrina to Eric Whitacre. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning, posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

He has also worked with Terry Lightfoot, Aker Bilk & Kenny Ball plus TV/radio appearances.
Jonathan appeared earlier at the club this year with Brian White's KING JAZZ and brought the house down with a Errol Garner rendition of 'The Man I Love'
Ted Beament - Ted was self-taught in his youth, later studying with bassist and teacher Peter Ind. In his own words, he sidled into, rather than burst upon, the London jazz scene. For many years he did gigs with his own trio and with other freelance groups, reaching a point at which many top international musicians were happy to have him supporting them. He is also a superb and sensitive accompanist, as singers Maxine Daniels and Helen Shapiro have readily testified. Over the years, he has played frequently with Lyttelton band colleagues Adrian Macintosh and the late Paul Bridge, but when he himself joined the band in 1995, it was his first-ever job with a regular working band, an extraordinary fact which he puts down to being a 'late developer'!
Dave Browning - Dave has been playing the British jazz scene for over 20 years and has already proved to be popular with audiences who love all piano styles from stride to mainstream. Dave's main influence is the great 'Fats' Waller with his rapturous left hand striding the keys in which Dave specialises in and is considered as one of the top stride pianists in the UK.
"Dave Browning is a marvellous stride pianist in the Ralph Sutton style as well as one of the nicest people you'll ever meet" - Digby Fairweather

29th. Fargo. Fargo began in early 2007 when vocalist/guitarist Ian Slater and bassist Dave Bronze decided it was time to act on a long discussed idea to put together a band with a difference. The brief was simple; it had to be rootsy, it had to be musically interesting, but most of all - it had to be fun! A mutual interest in Western Swing seemed to point the way. The natural choice of co-vocalist was Heather Simmons, whose early 20th century jazz influences were a perfect complement to the mix. After a period of time compiling and rehearsing songs, drummer Andy Peek was invited along and immediately accepted an invitation to join. After a long search violinist Mike Piggott and multi-instrumentalist Martin Wheatley were added to the line-up. In December 2007 the band performed it's first gig in a small Essex pub before a few dozen people to a rapturous response. The Fargo story had just begun................

Visit www.duncanfraserjazz.com for more details'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase from Monday 26th March. The Band features some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK, who feature in Big Band bands such as NYJO, RAM Big Band & The Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. If you're in Dublin .... New Orleans is where jazz was born, but New York is where it spoke it's first words. The very first jazz record was recoded 95 years ago this year, on February 26, 1917 on the Victor record label. The band were a quintet called The Original Dixieland Jass Band and the two tracks recorded that day were ' Dixie Jass Band One-Step ' and ' Livery Stable Blues '. You can find both songs on YouTube. The earliest Irish jazz recording i have in my record collection is 'That Patterson Girl EP' from Northern Ireland based jazz and blues singer Anna Ottilie Patterson (1932-2011) which was recorded on the Jazz Today label back in 1955. Married to the Big Band giant that was Chris Barber in 1959 and divorced in 1983. I actually found and purchased this in the Oxfam branch on Parliament street along with some original Blue Note records from the early 60's for the princely sum of 2 Euros each, Bargain ! (Always good to keep your eye on thrift and charity shops.) Seeing that our State broadcaster RTE banned the playing of jazz music on the airwaves until 1947, probably there wasn't much of a market for jazz in Ireland in the early 2Oth Century, but if any reader can inform me differently of early Irish jazz releases, you can get in touch at jazzin...@gmail.com.
Friday evening jazz sessions from 6.30pm at the Radisson Hotel, Golden Lane regularly have appearances from top local crooners.
Another venue that's just opened it's door to jazz is the La Caverna restaurant on Fownes street, Temple Bar. Situated in their 300 year old red brick basement, it happens every Friday and Saturday from 10.30pm, this is now "officially" Dublin's only late night jazz club, so get on down there.
Guitarist Mike Nielsen and friends do a weekly Saturday session at KC Peaches, Nassau Street from 8pm. Admission Free but a donation into a hat at the end of the evening is appreciated, as this pays for the band.
Ace jazz drummer Kevin Brady and his Organics collective have 3 gigs at JJ's this month with the main event being the Dave Redmond Quartet featuring Jason Rigby (US) on sax, and Bill Carrothers (US) piano on Saturday April 28th with doors 9pm and admission 12 Euros, expect a blistering set. www.organicsmusic.com.
Cormac O' Brien continues his residency upstairs at the Central hotel, Exchequer Street with his Trio+1 every Sunday from 5pm and other gigs - www.facebook.com/jazzcentral
Veteran crooner Kevin Morrow keeps packing them into the Burlington on Saturdays from 7.30pm and his Sunday gig at the Hampton hotel, Donnybrook moves to a new start time of 6pm, and a and they do a great steak there too !
The delectable Stella Bass with her Trio continue their long running Sunday residency at Cafe en Seine from 2pm, while a new jazz brunch has started at Brasserie Sixty 6, South Great Georges street from 12 Midday.
The outstanding Emilie Conway is on a roll since releasing her debut Cd last month with a mini tour around the country www.emilieconway.ie.
With all this live jazz going on, there is now no excuse for not getting out and supporting it especially with the majority of these gigs having no cover charge at the door...
Anthony Downes is a professional camera man about town with full HD equipment for any band looking to record their live gigs (including live feed) for YouTube and band websites, the cost is from 50 Euros upwards - 086 1797058.
Finally, Blue Note recording artist Robert Glasper who recently sold out his Dublin show, has a cutting edge Cd release called ' Black Radio' out now which features collaborations with artists such as Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Bilal to name some. Fast becoming the Duke Ellington of Jazz Electronica, pianist Glasper mixes acoustic improvisation with Hip Hop, and turntable sampling to full effect. I have 4 copies of the Cd to give away, and all you need to do to enter the competition, is to text your full name to 087 2878755 before April 30th and good luck.

The aim of the Thursday Night Jazz Workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
3. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
Many thanks!
Hi everyone
Firstly, just the usual request to please spread the word!! Please forward this email to anyone who you think might be interested. If they send an email to ke...@jazzupdate.co.uk I will be happy to add them to the mailing list; alternatively they can sign themselves up by going to www.jazzupdate.co.uk.
And of course ... if you have a gig or anything jazz-related that you think the world would benefit from knowing about please pass me on the details and I will be more than happy to add it to the newsletter (in text format which I can copy and paste please, NOT jpgs or similar of flyers). Feel free to to come along and leave flyers etc. on the tables at the Buckhurst Hill jam too.

TONIGHT Friday 11th May - Beverley Stone with Infusion.
On Tuesday 22nd May a chance to see one of the finest jazz flautists around. Neale Ridding (flute and saxes) will be with Infusion (Chris Neill piano, Flo Moore double bass, Josh Law drums) at Annie's Jazz 7 High Street, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex SS9 2EN. 8.30pm. Free admission.
Tuesday 22 May - Viktor Obsust Trio returns to Benslow Music for Jazz Manouche II. Morrison Hall, Benslow Music Trust, Benslow Lane, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 9RB.
An international line-up in a Reinhardt-inspired evening of virtuosity. World-renowned bassist Viktor Obsust together with his two colleages, accordionist Maurizio Minardi and guitarist Andrea Quintarelli, return to Benslow Music on Tuesday 22 May for an evening of moody and virtuosic jazz inspired by the gypsy tradition of Django Reinhardt and injected wth exuberant individuality.
Said Stephen Pettitt, Benslow Music's Director of Music: " We're honoured to welcome back this truly astounding group of musicians for a second round of gypsy-inspired jazz following their highly successful evening here last year. Their virtuosity will dazzle as much as their ability to summon contemplative atmospheres will seduce. And the sheer originality of their take on the gypsy jazz traditions first cultivated by the great Django Reinhardt in post-war Paris is something very special indeed. An event truly not to be missed." For further details please speak to Vicky on 01462 459446.
Doors and bar open at 7.30 pm. Tickets: £10 (full-time students free with proof of status). Box office: 01462 459446. Tickets also available from David's Music Shop, Letchworth and Hitchin Town

The Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra is appearing at Epsom Playhouse this
coming Thursday (May 10th) - if you live in the area, they'd be pleased to see
you. Do spread the word! We recently performed at Milford Haven and Harrow Arts
Centre and had a tremendous response at both theatres - the band really goes
from strength to strength!! Keep up to date by going to
www.tuxedojazzorchestra.com
The Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra has just produced a new CD - WHITE HEAT. 16 great tracks including 12th Street Rag, Business In F, Heat Wave, You're The Cream In My Coffee, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Black And Tan Fantasy and more. The chaps (Dave Ford, Peter Rudeforth, James Evans, Sue Greenway, Mick Foster, Graham Hughes, Martin Litton, Sandy Burnett, Jeff Lardner, Len Walker and Catherine Sykes) did a fantastic job - and I'm on it as well! If you'd like a copy, send a cheque for £11.50 (which covers the CD and P&P) made out to AP Jacobs and send to PENTOWER, Tower Hill, Fishguard, SA65 9LA. Don't forget to include your name and address!!!
Two websites which you may find very interesting. Both keep you informed about jazz gigs around the country. Have a look at www.jazzupdate.co.uk. and WWW.JAZZNORTHWEST.CO.UK
A reminder to tune in to www.1940sukradio.co.uk which plays music from the 1920s to the '40s as well as having very interesting articles on their website. Presenters include the completely bonkers Bob Kerr of the famous Whoopee Band!
Look at www.vintagefestival.co.uk which looks like huge fun and includes James Langton and his Solid Senders. James (erstwhile front-man and vocalist with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra) now lives in New York but makes an occasional foray back to Blighty to front this sensational band.
For much more news, articles, laughs and occasional controversy (ahem), why not subscribe to the Tony Jacobs & Friends Newsletter. Send a cheque made payable to Tony Jacobs and Friends for the princely amount of £7.50 and send off to Tony Williams (editor), 82 Warnford Road, Bournemouth, BH7 6QT. This is a non-profit making (well, I've never seen a penny!) quarterly newsletter which does its bit for great music.

This year we have three top pianists of varying styles who in the last set will perform 'Battle of the Pianos', where they will all be playing together! They will be accompanied by Alan Morgan (double bass) who pioneered the Pianorama with Ray Ward plus Paul Budd on drums.
JJ Vinten - Jonathan plays jazz piano for the very best. A performer of legendary status amongst his peers, J.J. was the late George Melly's accompanist with John Chilton's Feetwarmers for ten years and subsequently toured the world with his exciting piano playing, including a permanent Christmas season at Ronnie Scott's, in Soho, London.

22nd. Come Home Sweet Papa. Heather Simmons on Double-Bass and vocals, Tim Huskisson on piano and Martin Wheatley on guitar. An evening to chill with this lovely relaxing line-up of musicians.
29th.

As Mark Gardner concludes in Jazz Journal International, Leon "epitomises the assured confidence of a new generation." Clark Tracey of Herts Jazz says, “With Alex Garnett, Michael Janisch and Steve Brown in tow, we're expecting an exceptional evening. Not to be missed, it's well advised to book early for this one!”

'WANTED FOR CRIMES AGAINST JAZZ'
A swinging comedy, and mischievous affair coming to the Brighton Fringe A sparkling antidote to these bleak times. One of only 25 acts out of 700 shows selected to perform at brighton@leicester square, showcasing the most exciting work from this years fringe.
Burlesque, PVC catsuits, Lovetoys and a random devotion to Michael Ball. Is this really jazz? With only 4 rehearsals to go before their big gig, the manager of 'The Rhythm Method' falls for a frisky
singer promising her a big break. But with more enthusiam than talent, and her mate in tow, blow up dolls and brief detours into Greek folk music, hopes of making it become slim for all.
'The Tempo Teasers' would like to invite you to a night of fabulous music, with a live jazz trio, cracking comedy and vocal warm ups never witnessed before. How else can you reach that top 'G'?
Set to the timeless story of love, friendship, ambition it celebrates the ability within us all to get it spectacularly wrong. These girls manage to make life swing despite it all. Think a female 21st Century
Morecombe and Wise do jazz. The first venture into writing and performing by Carolyn Pallon, an NHS Clinical Psychologist by day (singer and writer by night).
Co-produced by her partner in crime Nicola Burgess, who runs her own Theatre Company. Both jazz singers, accompanied by performing jazz musicians, making it a quality musical evening too. Carolyn and Nicky are also mothers with a creative approach to having no spare time, making this show a tour de force of spirit.
Catch the 'The Tempo Teasers' while you can in their first show 'Wanted for Crimes Against Jazz' at The Jive Monkey, 5 Steine Street, Brighton on 15/16/17th May.
And at Leicester Square Theatre London as well on Saturday 2nd June at 9pm.
Doors open 8pm, show 9pm followed by a live music set by Pixie 3 and friends. Tickets £9 from brightonfringe.org (01273 917272) or wegottickets or www.jivemonkey.com
Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.
On Saturday May 31st, 7.30 pm, Interplay jazz quintet and folk
