More than 60 top musicians are descending on the Hawthorne Theatre, Campus West in Welwyn Garden City on September 20 to 22 for the Herts Jazz Festival. Visitors are promised a packed weekend programme of more than 26 hours of live performances ranging from ticketed events (hertjazzfestival.co.uk)in the Hawthorne to free informal mealtime and late-night foyer sessions. The stellar line up includes 'the Godfather of British Jazz', pianist Stan Tracey and his Octet, Georgie Fame, trumpet and flugelhorn master improviser Kenny Wheeler and award-winning contemporary British pianist Django Bates playing in his Beloved trio. They have a pair of Saturday Session tickets (you are able to choose your session) worth up to £40 to give away to a lucky reader. Saturday 21st September. The Woodford Wheezards will be staging a Charity "Jazzathon" at St Mary's Church High Road South Woodford between 11.00am and 4.00pm to help raise funds for the Children's Orphanage at Makutano Kenya. In previous years the "Jazzathon" has been regular feature of the Woodford Festival, which regrettably is not being held this year, but a reprise has been requested by "popular demand" and the "Wheezards" will be playing their repertoire of American songbook jazz standards. The line up is Geoff Seeff, tenor and violin, Alan Phillips, baritone and various wind instruments, Dave Burns, valve trombone, Neale Ridding, keyboards, Pete Edwards, drums and Chris Neill on bass. The band will be joined by guest singers and musicians throughout the day. Weather permitting the event will take place al fresco in front of the Church and a selection of food and booze will be available. There is no admission charge but collecting buckets will be strategically placed and donations to the charity will be greatly appreciated.

There is a Jam session on the first Thursday of each month in Colchester at The Bull, Crouch Street. They are lucky enough to have a house band that regularly features such great players as Bern Hodgekins (Bass player with Jazznights trio) and Mick Hutton (bass). Our attitude is that of inclusion and after a short set from the house band, we open the stage for jammers and singers. The Ipswich Jazz Collective meet once a month on a Friday to hold a jam session at the Golden Hind Pub on Nacton Road in Ipswich. They start at 7:30 with bass, drums, keyboard gear and a PA set up. 'Jazz Jam with Rich Buddie' celebrated its first birthday in January. It has gone from strength to strength, and really is the place to be on a Monday Night in Norwich. Every week from 8pm. Rich Buddie aka Barry Wortley, Turk, Simon and special guests play traditional and funky tunes. Every one is welcome to come along to watch or bring their instruments and join in. The regular 'Norwich JazzJam' takes place every Monday from 8.30pm - www.jazzjam.org.uk . Players from across Norfolk (and some from even further afield) enjoy playing the tunes of their choice backed by what has been rated as one of the finest small bands in the region.
Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. Matt Furness on drums drives the whole group - a veteran ... but still only 15! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail. Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set and agree the tempo and intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.

Well of course it never happened - but we will spend the evening pretending it did! The Mervyn Wright 20 Piece Orchestra will play exclusively Ted Heath charts and Paul Wood will be singing the songs made famous by Frank Sinatra arranged by Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Neal Hefty, Quincy Jones, Johnny Mandel etc. Paul Wood will also perform songs associated with Matt Monro, Bobby Darin and Harry Connick Junior etc.

Ted Beament - piano, Alan Morgan - double bass, Alan Clarke - drums. In April 2006 Atila toured with legendary Buddy Greco and earned a new fan in the process. Buddy Greco said, 'I was knocked out by Atila. He has the voice and the class to show the world what great music is all about'. Atila was invited to tour the UK with Buddy again in the summer of 2008. Following the tour Atila recorded the album 'Hello Young Lovers'. Sir Michael Parkinson who said of Atila, " was very impressed with his singing, he has a real feel for the lyric...I think he's got a very promising future". Early arrival essential!

30th October - Leon Greening Quartet
Leon Greening - keyboard, Christian Brewer - saxes, Adam King - double bass and Steve Brown - drums. Pianist Leon Greening's hard swinging style has made him a favourite on the UK Jazz circuit for over a decade and popular at Ronnie Scott's. He will include tunes by his own favourites such as Victor Feldman and Dudley Moore plus some of his own compositions. Leon brings with him a sizzling band line-up of favourite UK musicians. His extraordinary solos, inspired by the likes of Wynton Kelly and Bud Powell, keep the audience on the edge of their seats and mark him out, at the age of only 33, as one of the finest pianists this country has ever produced. Graham has been active on the Southend jazz scene for many years as a vocalist and playing a range of other instruments including trumpet, flugel, valve-trombone & mellophone. Music-wise the evening will cover swing and bop and also funk, soul & latin, so be prepared for a variety of styles including some original compositions.
Graham's wife Vicky sadly passed in March 2013 and spent her last weeks being cared for at Fair Havens Hospice. Havens Hospices are a charitable organisation which receives only minimal funding from the Government. All proceeds from the gig will go directly to Havens Hospices. Chelmsford Jazz Club presents 10 or 11 concerts a year at the Cramphorn Theatre, Fairfield Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1JG (next to the Civic Theatre). The majority of concerts are held on Sundays at lunchtime, although in the summer months some are held in the evening. The jazz presented by the club is generally mainstream and modern and the club is justly proud of the quality of the musicians, British, European and American, who appear. For an annual subscription of £8.00 (£14.00 joint) members are entitled to a £4.00 reduction on normal ticket prices, and early notice of concerts. A monthly newsletter passes on information about our own club, as well as items of interest about other local venues. Val Wiseman's remarkable career began in the midlands and owes much to early influences in music and drama and the opportunity of working with some of Britain's legendary bands. Alex Welsh, Humphrey Lyttelton, Monty Sunshine and Kenny Baker were quick to notice her potential and featured her on their tours and broadcasts. Her growing reputation led to a starring role in a new Billie Holiday tribute, Lady Sings The Blues with a team of top British players. The show and album won critical acclaim, with television and concert appearances worldwide and for Val, an army of new fans.
Her first solo album Just For A Thrill was released in 2003 to enthusiastic reviews and in 2008 Val's work was rewarded when she was voted best British vocalist in the British Jazz Awards.Val still tours with Lady Sings The Blues, and also stars in a variety of musical shows: her tribute to favourite singers Divas Of Swing, the Duke Ellington songbook, Sophisticated Lady with Martin Litton's Ellingtonians, Jazz Goes To The Movies, a joyous review of film songs with Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen, plus Gershwin tribute, S'Wonderful and Swinging Down Memory Lane with John Petters Productions. Val also presents lively, illustrated talks: The Joys of Jazz Singing and The Brontë Legacy. Returning to her interest in drama and love for musical theatre, Val has written and produced an album of songs dedicated to the world's most famous literary family, the Brontës. Keeping The Flame Alive, with music by distinguished pianist and composer Brian Dee, is now being presented as a dramatic musical show. Formed in 1991, the English duo Rag Mama Rag, have consistently built up their reputation as one of Europes finest Country Blues acts. With an interesting and wide range of instruments, (Ashley Dow, Henderson Acoustic Guitar, National & Dobro Resonator Bottleneck Guitars, Weissenborn Acoustic Lap Steel, Ukulele and Vocals, plus Deborah Dow, Harmonica, Washboard, Percussion and Backing Vocals), Rag Mama Rag create an exceptionally full and hard driving rhythmic sound which soon has audiences feet tapping. Their repertoire is 20s and 30s Blues based, but extremely varied, encompassing Mississippi Blues, East Coast Ragtime sounds, early White Country tunes, Original Compositions, and many other regional styles of the 20s and 30s period. He's a regular performer at Ronnie Scott's where he has racked up over 150 performances, spent three years with the James Taylor Quartet, has performed with the BBC big band, the legendary David Axelrod and led his organ trio to first place in the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) awards for "best jazz ensemble" in 2010. He is a 'complete' guitarist who has good taste and a great sound coupled to a dazzlingly fleet-fingered technique as well as being an interesting composer. Drummer Matt Home is crisp, driving and thoroughly accomplished. Pete Whittaker demonstrated the Hammond organ's ability to simulate a 'little big band' while taking care of the bass duties. These guys have been together for eight years, touring the UK and have developed a musical empathy that is wonderful to hear. Do come and see them!

Herts Jazz Festival 2013 - A big bonus for jazz lovers at the Herts Jazz Festival coming up on 20-22 September has just been announced:with an exhibition of photographs by the late Denis Williams.
This special exhibition features 50 photos taken at Herts Jazz in the years 1991-2000, with portraits of some of the greats of British jazz including Stan Tracey, Don Rendell, Peter King, Don Weller, Guy Barker and many more. Plus there is also a "Visitors from the USA" section, with 11 photos of legends such as Benny Golson, Scott Hamilton, Mal Waldron and Harry Allen.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Herts Jazz Club and the New Maynard Gallery and can be seen at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City from 16 September until 14 October. It is timed to conincide with the Herts Jazz Festival , to be enjoyed by hundreds of fans from all over the country who come to Welwyn Garden City to hear some of the best jazz in Britain. This is yet another free offering for Festival-goers who will be able to enjoy six jazz trios playing late night and daytime sessions free in the Hawthorne Theatre foyer over the weekend.
Headlining the Festival in the theatre will be Georgie Fame, Django Bates and Stan Tracey alongside the cream of the British jazz scene: Jason Yarde and Andrew McCormack, Brandon Allen, Iain Ballamy, Ronnie Rae, Kenny Wheeler, Tony Kofi, Don Weller, Mark Nightingale and more. One of Britain's finest jazz events. This is the third Festival, building upon previous years' successes. The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

The Hertfordshire Music Service and North Herts Youth Jazz run the North Herts Youth Jazz Big Band
The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings, term time, at The North Herts Music School, Highbury House, Highbury Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 9RU 01462 434052. Rehearsals run from 1715 to 1845. Up to age 19 or older if in full time education. We would welcome interest from rhythm section, horn section players and singers. Musicians of grade 5 standard and upwards. Either acoustic or electric bass players. Please be prepared to read charts too! Improvisers will be especially welcome but guidance and instruction will be given to all who wish it. We would also like to encourage composers to come along and write for this group. This band will perform at least once in public each term to promote the playing of jazz amoung young people and perform a wide range of jazz repertoire, from Duke Ellington to Mark Lockheart. There is a termly fee for membership, though a remission of fees scheme is operated by the Hertfordshire Music Service, subject to terms and conditions.

They are part of Essex County Council and provide " Quality instrumental tuition and workshops to school and colleges in Essex, covering all major orchestral and band instruments and musical styles" " The opportunity for young people to perform in many youth orchestras and choirs " and " Concerts throughout the county where the groups showcase their talents."
One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country's leading jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition. He has recorded and toured with Radiohead and appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. He is also the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz. Graham has been active on the Southend jazz scene for many years as a vocalist and playing a range of other instruments including trumpet, flugel, valve-trombone & mellophone. Music-wise the evening will cover swing and bop and also funk, soul & latin, so be prepared for a variety of styles including some original compositions. Graham's wife Vicky sadly passed in March 2013 and spent her last weeks being cared for at Fair Havens Hospice. Havens Hospices are a charitable organisation which receives only minimal funding from the Government. We are raising funds in the memory of Victoria Helen Hunter 1968-2013. Graham's quartets will feature himself on horns and vocals, Tony Gooderham on keyboards, Jason Campbell on drums, Ted Simkins on double-bass and Martin Hicks on fretless bass guitar.
Guest musicians confirmed so far are vocalists Toni Baxter and Carol Braithwaite, guitarists Dave Mascall and Alex Field, saxophonists Kenny Baxter, Mick Foster, Anita Carmichael, Gerry Marshall, Clive Dimmock, Gilly Burgoyne, Ian Thompson, Steve Bryant and trombonist Mick Jarrett. On keyboards Tim Huskinson and on drums/percussion Alan Clarke and Marc Cecil.

Saturday 21st September. The Woodford Wheezards will be staging a Charity "Jazzathon" at St Mary's Church High Road South Woodford between 11.00am and 4.00pm to help raise funds for the Children's Orphanage at Makutano Kenya. In previous years the "Jazzathon" has been regular feature of the Woodford Festival, which regrettably is not being held this year, but a reprise has been requested by "popular demand" and the "Wheezards" will be playing their repertoire of American songbook jazz standards. The line up is Geoff Seeff, tenor and violin, Alan Phillips, baritone and various wind instruments, Dave Burns, valve trombone, Neale Ridding, keyboards, Pete Edwards, drums and Chris Neill on bass. The band will be joined by guest singers and musicians throughout the day. Weather permitting the event will take place al fresco in front of the Church and a selection of food and booze will be available. There is no admission charge but collecting buckets will be strategically placed and donations to the charity will be greatly appreciated.
To celebrate its 25th anniversary the National Jazz Archive (NJA) based at Loughton Library and supported by Essex County Council and by The National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund is holding its first jazz festival to be held on 28th and 29th November at 8.00pm at Loughton Methodist Church, 260 High Road, Loughton, Essex.
On Thursday 28th November the NJA is proud to present Dame Cleo Laine and the principal members of the Dankworth Dynasty completed by daughter Jacqui and son Alec; together on stage for a rare reunion! Their musical friends for this one-off NJA presentation include four of London's most prominent jazz stars: James Pearson (house-pianist/ musical director Ronnie Scott's club); Andy Panayi (longtime Dankworth luminary/one-time winner of the John Dankworth Award!); Jim Hart (2013/British Jazz Award winner) and Gordon Campbell (Lead trombonist/BBC Big Band).

Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. Matt Furness on drums drives the whole group - a veteran ... but still only 15! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail. Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set and agree the tempo and intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.

Buddy Greco said, 'I was knocked out by Atila. He has the voice and the class to show the world what great music is all about'. Atila was invited to tour the UK with Buddy again in the summer of 2008. Following the tour Atila recorded the album 'Hello Young Lovers'. Born in London and raised in Hastings, where she currently lives with her husband, bassist Roger Carey, East Side favourite Liane has been playing the piano since she was three and performing professionally since the age of fifteen. She has toured and recorded with artists such as Gerry Rafferty, Long John Baldry and Paul McCartney. Liane enjoyed success as double winner in the 2005 BBC Jazz Awards and 'Best female jazz vocalist' at the first Ronnie Scott's Jazz Awards. Liane went on to pick up the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Award for 'Musician Of The Year.' Later that year Liane formed an exciting new collaboration with the acclaimed Scottish jazz pianist Brian Kellock, and in November the pair toured throughout Scotland, at which The Herald declared, "This may well be British jazz's greatest double act." In 2009 Liane and her trio went stateside for the first time and performed to rapturous audiences at Dizzy's Jazz Club at the Lincoln Centre and the Rochester Jazz Festival. "No one who hears Liane Carroll in person is likely to forget the experience. It's not just that she's a brilliant pianist and a mesmerising singer, but that, like Stevie Wonder, she seems in some magical way to be made out of music. No recording has managed to capture this quality until now, but this one comes close" - Dave Gelly, The Observer (reviewing Liane's CD 'Up and Down'). Liane's latest CD 'Ballads' was released in mid April to great critical acclaim.

A celebration of hot jazz from the Gatsby era of the Roaring '20s opens the season of jazz concerts at St John's Arts Centre, (St John's Walk, Market St. Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ) on Thursday (26th September). World famous banjo virtuoso, Sean Moyses, who recently returned to the UK after living in Germany, presents his Hot Rhythm Boys in a show which guarantees to bring a smile to the face and to get the toes tapping.
Sean Moyses is regarded as one of the World's top professional banjo players. He has been playing since he was eleven years old. He mastered the ukulele, mandolin, five-string banjo, plectrum banjo, guitar and uke-banjo and as well as playing folk, country, bluegrass and acoustic music, developed a love for jazz and swing music of the 1920's and 1930's. Sean has worked with many leading bands, including the famous Pasadena Roof Orchestra with whom he has performed major concerts, television shows and on radio, all over Europe. He was featured in the hilarious musical comedy ensemble, Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band. For the past decade Sean was a star soloist Rod Mason's Hot Five and has been a popular attraction at music festivals in the USA and Japan. Sean's approach to music is very special. Whilst a high degree of technical ability is an essential part of his performance, humour and entertainment are equally important. Sean has the knack to switch from a complicated Ragtime piece to a George Formby novelty song on the 'uke' at the drop of a hat.
Joining Sean at Old Harlow will be his old boss, the world famous bandleader, trumpet player and comedian, Bob Kerr. Bob is a showbiz legend, who cut his teeth with the Temperance Seven, The Bozo Dog Doo Dah Band and the New Vaudeville Band. He was given the job of singing through a megaphone on the bands hit, "Winchester Cathedral", on Top of the Pops and the Ed Sullivan Show. With his Whoopee band, Bob played the famous Earls Court concerts with Bob Dylan and at the wedding of Roger Daltry of 'The Who'. Bob's first love was jazz and he will be playing an assortment of instruments at Thursday's gig.
Multi reedman, Trevor Whiting is no stranger to the Harlow audience, having appeared at the venue many times. He is regarded as one of the leading clarinet and saxophonists in the traditional jazz world, having served an apprenticeship which included recording with American pioneers, Art Hodes, Wild Bill Davison and Al Casey as well as being a member of Chris Barber's band. Trevor is now in great demand as a freelance jazz soloist.
Completing the band will be former Harlow drummin' man, John Petters and Harlow bass ace, Keith Donald.
