This gig takes place every Monday from 8.30pm at The Cottage pub in Norwich www.jazzjam.org.uk . Players from across Norfolk (and some from even further afield) enjoy playing the tunes of their choice backed by what has been rated as one of the finest small bands in the region.
Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with the celebrated Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. On drums is Matt Furness who drives the whole group - a veteran of many years ... but still only 14! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can even sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail.
The Cottage is CAMRA's award winning city pub. Whether you want to jam or just listen, you will get a warm welcome. The pub offers good food plus a range of real ales, great Belgian beers, single malts .... or soft drinks, teas and coffees for those driving!!! www.thecottagenorwich.co.uk
All players get a chance to show their skills; fair competence is the minimum requirement but the essentials are commitment, improvising skills and a passion for swinging jazz! Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set the tempo, agree the intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.
Paul Barnes has mentioned the jam more than once on his excellent BBC Radio Norfolk programme broadcast from 11 pm each Saturday night to 1 am on the Sunday, when he plays the best of jazz, swing and related rhythm with his own polished rhubarb. The show is available on line worldwide for 7 days via the BBC's 'Listen again' facility. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx

8th March - Jimmy C and the BluesdraJgons www.bluesdragons.com www.myspace.com/jimmycandthebluesdragons
Yet another fantastic band returning to Marigolds by popular demand.
Canadian - born singer, guitarist Jimmy C moved to Britain via Vancouver, San Francisco and Japan since when Jimmy and the band are earning a deserved reputation as one of the most entertaining and hard-working bands on the London circuit. Playing a repertoire which includes blues classics from Robert Johnson and T-bone Walker, various Kings of the blues, that is Albert, Freddie and BB, they follow through to the music which the British Blues Invasion of North America left in its wake, from the Rolling Stones to Cream, from Jimi Hendrix to the Doors and even Steppenwolf They freely admit they are not blues purists but as they point out neither were the blues greats - their mission is to do what Muddy Waters did, and what Rufus Thomas did, to entertain and get you dancing. Jimmy C & The Blues Dragons play sharp snappy blues, with a little bit of edge and an element of fun and clearly enjoy what they do and seem able to communicate this to audiences where ever they play"29th March - Tommaso Storace Quartet
www.tommasostarace.comBorn in 1975 in Milano, Italy Tommaso started playing the saxophone and studying music at the age of 18. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1994 where he graduated at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2000. He has performed with some of the most respected jazz musicians including Billy Cobham, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Jim Mullen, Jonathan Gee, Paolo Pellegatti, Gianni Giudici. In 2004 he collaborated with award winning oscar film composer Dario Marianelli ( 'Pride and Prejudice' and ' The Atonement' ) recording music for 'This Little Life', a BBC drama for Channel Four. In 2008 Tommaso was awarded with an Honorary Membership by Birmingham Conservatoire given to him for his significant contributions made across the years within the various branches of the music profession. When not busy performing concerts between the United Kingdom and Italy and composing, Tommaso is no stranger to the recording studios and has made several well received CDs.
12th April - The Fugitives: www.thefugitives.co.uk
Terry Boon - vocals, bass, guitar; Keith Harris - guitar, slide Guitar, harmonica, vocals; John Andreotti - guitar, vocals and Ken Shillingford - Drums
At the risk of repeating ourselves yet again another fantastic band returns to Marigolds by popular demand. The Fugitives repertoire includes songs that span the whole genre of blues music whether that is country blues from the 20's and 30's, Chicago and Delta blues from the 40's and 50's, right through the 60's to more recent songs that might take their fancy. The band members met sometime in the 70s and with various other musicians formed such 'miscellaneous' groups as "Eddie and the Dentures" and "The Human Jangle" before forming "Standing Flat". We are reliably informed that the latter was a band much appreciated by John Peel. The "Outsyders" followed, playing all their own music before the lads returned to the music that they love doing, the Blues. Often people in the audience, not versed in the Blues, are heard to say, "We didn't think we liked the blues but this is somehow different and we've had a great time," and this is no less true of the Fugitives performances. Don't miss them.
26th April - The Dave O'Higgins Quartet http://www.daveohiggins.com
Dave O' Higgins sax, Grant Windsor keyboards, Jeremy Brown on bass and Chris Draper drums.
Dave O'Higgins is a popular and well-known figure on the international jazz scene, having recorded numerous albums as leader with various lineups as well as featuring on other bands discs. He cut his teeth with NYJO and as always has played with far too many renowned jazz artists to list here both throughout the UK and all over the world. It has been said that he is one of the most vigorously compelling tenor players on the UK scene drawing on the influences of Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Dexter Gordon and many others but maintaining his individuality in playing unpretentious, accessible, no-nonsense acoustic jazz addressed with skillfully controlled energy. In his home city, London, Dave is a regular guest with the house band at Ronnie Scott's and plays every month at the 606 Club in Chelsea with his quartet. He also teaches saxophone, harmony and improvisation at the London Centre for Contemporary Music, benefitting swathes of up and coming young musicians with his experience!
THE JAZZ MIX @ THE MARITIME ROOM, Cliff's Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea.
For this month's gig on Thursday 28th February 2013 we welcome back Derek Nash, (saxophonist with the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra) with his powerful jazz funk/groove outfit Protect the Beat. Derek will be bringing his own inimitable style to the evening; he is an inspiring man to watch and a brilliant sax player. He will be performing alongside session aces Dave Ital on guitar, Winston Blissett on bass, Arden Hart on keyboards and trumpet and Darby Todd on drums. The band is formed from 5 of the finest Jazz Funk experts you are likely to find having built up a rich funk pedigree between them in playing with artists such as Jeff Lorber, Dave Grusin, Steve Winwood, Bootsy Collins and Incognito.
Based in London, the band is now in it's 12th year and has been described in the music press as "the strongest live act within the genre in the UK at this time…audiences just love these guys!"
They released their debut album "It ain't Dinner Jazz" in 2001 and followed that up with "Intrepid" in 2008, it was picked up favorably by digital radio station 'The Jazz' and as the result of committed airplay the album went to number 1 in an independent UK Jazz Chart. 'Intrepid' remained at the number 1 spot for 11 weeks!
With numerous festival appearances over the years including The Capitol Jazz Festival (USA) in 2005 and 2 memorable shows at Brecon Jazz in 2008 and 2009.
PTB have certainly left an impression with their inimitable brand of aggressive Jazz Funk, to quote the title of their debut album, "It ain't Dinner Jazz".Doors open 8pm, music from 8.30pm-11pm. Admission £12, students £6 with valid photo card

Nat Steele Quartet plays Herts Jazz Club from 8pm-10.30 pm Sunday 3 March 2013 at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City
Since Nat's recent arrival on the scene, he has quickly gained a reputation as a cutting-edge virtuoso on his instrument. Following in the footsteps of Milt Jackson, Victor Feldman and Cal Tjader, his playing is beautifully lyrical and melodic, but always with a focus on a hard driving swing. The quartet features some of the finest names in the UK: Leon Greening (Joe Cohn, Guy Barker, Incognito) on piano, Mark Taylor on drums, and brother Luke Steele (Paul Jones, Pete King) on double bass. Their repertoire is partly based on the pad that Milt Jackson was touring with during the 1990s and includes swinging Cedar Walton and Mike LeDonne tunes, with a fair sprinkling of the quartet's own arrangements of standards and blues.

Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival - Colston Hall from 1 -3 March 2013. Tickets are now on sale Online:www.bristoljazzandbluesfest.com / Colston Hall: T 0117 922 3686
Along with generous helping of blues, the Festival brings alive trad and swing with three bands who prove that the best music never stales, merely ages like good wine.
The Big Chris Barber Band is a ten piece led by the trombonist with the most remarkable CV in British music. He's played with Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Doctor John, Van Morrison. Eric Clapton, Keith Emerson, Mark Knopfler, Joe Harriott… . His band ranges well beyond trad and blues. With seven horns in the front line, Barber can reproduce a New Orleans Street Parade, present authentic arrangements of Duke Ellington's Black and Tan Fantasy and has even been known to play Miles' Davis classic All Blues.
The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band focus on the classic repertoire of Louis Armstrong, with Alan Bateman taking Armstrong's trumpet parts and brother Ian emulating Trummy Young on trombone. The five piece has been acclaimed for bringing audiences the sound of the much loved Armstrong All Stars, who played round the globe from the late 1940s. The tune titles speak for themselves: Strutting with Some Barbecue; West End Blues; Muskrat Ramble. This is where real jazz began. A sellout appearance at Ronnie Scott's last year showed that Louis soaring virtuoso licks have plenty of life in them yet!
Alyn Shipton's Buck Clayton Legacy Band celebrates the great swing trumpeter who shot to fame with the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1930s. Clayton passed a batch of unrecorded arrangements to Shipton, his biographer, and the writer, who leads the band from the bass, pulled together an all star band the perform them. Alan Barnes clarinet and alto playing energises the front line, along with trumpeter Menno Daams. This is no tribute band, but a superb ensemble making new music in a living tradition. This new album, "The Cook, the Clown, the Monk and the Accordionist", features Maurizio's latest compositions and, in counterpoint to his previous album, "My Piano Trio", focuses this time on the accordion. The Maurizio Minardi Trio performs Maurizio's original compositions. Maurizio's style is reminiscent of Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Yann Tiersen and Michael Nyman. Maurizio will be joined for the launch by his trio, with Nick Pini on double bass and Marco Quarantotto on drums. The performance will also feature guest player Shirley Smart on cello. Acclaim for Maurizio's previous album, "My Piano Trio", released last spring:
"Lyrical, intelligent, contemporary piano jazz with its roots in the European classical tradition and beyond..." (The Jazz Mann)
"The overall feeling is tranquil and meditative- interesting, crafted writing, fine playing and above all a strong emotional appeal " (LondonJazz)
"My Piano Trio ably demonstrates Minardi's strengths as a composer and musician, crossing the bridge between two musical worlds with imagination and grace." (All About Jazz)

John Seeley's Thursday Night Saxophone Choir
Thursday 17th, 31st January and 14th, 28th February from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. £7 Entry - All Levels Welcome
St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LFThe saxophone choir is a workshop that aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone choir music, with a focus on classical music, ranging from G.Palestrina to Eric Whitacre. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed, giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning, posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.
The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy will open in January.

The Duncan Fraser Big Band present:
'Dealing In Wheeler', the debut album from The Duncan Fraser Big Band is available for all to purchase. The Band features some of the best young Jazz musicians in the UK, who feature in Big Band bands such as NYJO, RAM Big Band & The Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra. The album takes you through 7 original compositions by young Flugelhorn virtuoso and Composer Duncan Fraser. Here's what people are saying about it…
"This album is the realisation of a dream for Duncan Fraser; it contains tracks brilliantly composed and arranged by a very talented young man who leads an equally talented young band. The average age of the band is 22 and the youngest member of the band is just 16. You would be hard pushed to find any musical ensemble with young players with such professionalism, musicianship and ability these days."
"Every track has been brilliantly crafted by Fraser and is clearly a direct tribute to his biggest influence as a jazz performer, Kenny Wheeler. His music is fresh yet still rooted in the Wheeler style. The combination of Fraser's talent as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and this fantastic young band make for an album which deserves to be recognised in the jazz world and beyond."

A reminder to tune in to www.1940sukradio.co.uk which plays music from the 1920s to the '40s as well as having very interesting articles on their website. Presenters include the completely bonkers Bob Kerr of the famous Whoopee Band!
Look at www.vintagefestival.co.uk which looks like huge fun and includes James Langton and his Solid Senders. James (erstwhile front-man and vocalist with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra) now lives in New York but makes an occasional foray back to Blighty to front this sensational band.
For much more news, articles, laughs and occasional controversy (ahem), why not subscribe to the Tony Jacobs & Friends Newsletter. The Eastbury Concert Band who meet every Friday evening at Bower Hall, Havering-Atte-Bower, near Romford, Essex. are looking for new members, whatever the instrument.
The standard of the band is getting better all the time and it is mainly due to the increase in members and the effort that they put in at rehearsals, so don't let this put you off coming because these 2 situations can only help you get better, if , for example, you are in the position that you haven't played for a long time or you don't think you are good enough.
Playing along with all the other members of the band is one of the best ways of practicing. We do have one or two instruments that we could loan out but don't rely on this as we do not have many; it is better that you have your own instrument. Why not give me, Lance, a ring? This summer the lead trombonist of Michael Kilpatrick's band will be leaving, and he is desperate to do whatever he can to expand his network of contacts across the region in the hope that it might lead to the name of a trombone who is keen and available to join as a regular in his orchestra. Anyone interested or who knows someone who might be interested please contact him at the email address below. He would be most very grateful!

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhay...@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:
1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.
2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings at jazzupdate.co.uk please.
3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.
4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.
5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
Many thanks!
